The all-new Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is BACK, and this time it’s taking on the almighty AMG GT!
So how do the two compare? Well starting with the Hyundai, it’s powered by two electric motors which combine to produce an incredible 650hp and 740Nm of torque. Given the two motors it comes with four-wheel drive, but the large battery adds to the weight, meaning it tips the scales at 2,235kg! However, all that power comes relatively cheap, with the IONIQ 5 N starting from £65,000.
Then we come to the AMG. It’s powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can produce 585hp and 800Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox, and it comes in a bit lighter than the IONIQ, weighing in at 2,130kg. However, it is SO much more expensive than the Hyundai, costing around £165,000!

Honestly, Huyndai's EV achievement is amazing! it has put all other ICE companies to shame.
I don’t get why so many are hating on the Hyundai. I’m petrol power all the way, and hate the thought of one day having to drive an EV, but this thing makes electric as fun as possible, and just beat a merc that costs a hundred grand more! A hundred grand! The level of performance for the price is what people seem to forget.
And the weird part is, given both of their weight, the Hyundai could even drive comparable to the AMG.

The ICE car industry was led by Germany, followed closely by Japan. Korea was the latest entrant among the major existing ICE vehicle manufacturers and maintained a low price policy to enter the market. I believe that time will ultimately solve this. If Hyundai and Kia continue as they are now, they will gain people's recognition before long.

Even "IF" the Ionic5N lost... it is a 5 seater SUV with loads of space, so you can take your family with you on weekends.
But it won.
And all for £100k LESS than the Merc!! Got to love it.
And it cost a fraction of the price, requires no trips to the gas station, and much fewer maintenance requirements. If it wasn’t for EVs, the Mercedes would be a fantastic vehicle. Now it’s just last year’s tech.

My thinking is Hyundai didn't optimize it for 0-100kmh, but for higher, like 80-160 kmh.

@@MilodeVries The issue here is it gains speed just at the right time to get a good 1/4 mile time - earlier or later it loses out.
That suggests overvolting like Tesla used to do and its not something that can usually be repeated continually. While the battery is new and full its fine but as it ages not so much.
It will be interesting to see how they behave after the OTA updates start coming in.

If you look at the 0-200 curve, you can see it's quite linear, just tapers of at the end, since it cannot maintain NGB (the boost) for longer than 10s.
They architected for longevity and fun on the track, 0-100 and 1/4 mile are a lot less important. Hell even lap times aren't that important to them.
I don't see why they would pull tricks like you mention. All the reviews are raving because of the other stuff, the straight line performance just isn't that exiting for electric cars. Sure, it enables videos like this, but I can't imagine that being very high on the list of Hyundai's priorities.
But we'll see ofc. Unfortunately mine crashed after only 4000km, so no info on longevity there. But you can see it in Misha's vid, so in a way it lives on forever

Mercedes-AMGs flagships have been losing to EVs for a decade all ready. It is just you being late to realizing it.
@@EspenX on straightline maybe. AMGs were never meant to excel on tge straight line, but instead on the fun of skidding the rear wheels and on track. But with all the european brands suddenly focusing on straightline speed than anything else, they're slowly becoming the worst of both worlds as evs are undoubtedly the answer for straightline performance. Even Toyota is aware of this and decided not to prioritize straightline performance on their future gasoline sports cars but instead of the fun and the experience. But they do seem to be preparing a full blown performance ev like everyone else under the lexus name.

It's a German thing. The new M5 is somehow even heavier than their full electric i5 M60.
The new 2025 M5 weighs 2700kg and is slower than it's previous model... it is heavier than a three row full electric Kia EV9 that comfortably hauls 7 adults... the Germans should drink less beers... Or should they drink more?
Because they made it a full grand tourer this time rather than a comfortable supercar like the previous model.
Granted, 2100kg is still quite insane, it's heavier than a s500.

I mean, not at the accelerating but hyundai beated merc at the brake test is really impressive point to me. Hyundai's 0.6G regen is amazing😮
It is is even better than the Rimac every costing US$ 2.2 million, that can only achieve 0.4 G on regen braking...

There was an interview with the head of N Albert Biermann and he said nothing they did with rimac is present in the platform underneath the current 800v EVs they sell

Actually the overall weight of the Ioniq 5N considering it's a EV is not that bad. AMG GT is engineered for a completely different undertaking. Nice comparison both are brilliant kits. Matt vs Tiff make it happen Carwow generation drag race. A once in a lifetime Event !
I don’t see why you would choose this over the new Model 3. It’s 800lbs heavier, slower in a straight line, 80 miles less range, and $20k more expensive. Sure the brakes are said to be better on the I5N, but you could spend $10k on 8-piston ceramics for the Model 3 and still be under the cost of the I5N.
Look at Misha who raced both of these on the nurburgring. The Ioniq 5 N was able to complete 2 laps with ZERO over heating issues or over heating brakes. When he tested the brand new Highland Model 3 Performance the brakes gave up and caught one fire/smoked after 1/4th of the first lap and then the car cut power by 50% by through the first lap because the motor/battery were over heating.
Now the EU gets a different battery than NA. So maybe American ones will be better. But either way if you wanna do track driving or very aggressive road driving the Ioniq 5 is better. It's also more practical and more fun with the fake shifts, drifts modes, etc.
But if you just wanna performance EV for daily driving the Model 3 is an amazing deal. It's also very much improved is great to drive according to people who have compared the N and 3@@josephquinto5812

@@josephquinto5812 You can spend $10k to solve the brake issue and spend another $10k to solve the battery overheating issue in Tesla Model 3 Performance. Even then, you are left with a lesser product without the warranty that has no extra bells and whistles like eShift, active sound, N pedal (one pedal driving around the track), 0.6g regen braking, 800v architecture, much faster charging, etc. Plus, I5N is a midsize CUV, and Model 3 is a compact sedan. So, if you want to get a Model 3 and modify it for the track use, why not just buy I5N?

Why are you buying a CUV for the track? Dropping $20k on the Model 3 would only solidly it as significantly better than the I5N lol. No amount of brain dead tik tok features will change the fact the I5N is 800lbs heavier than the Model 3

Considering Hyundais aerodynamics, electric really is much more potent here. Batterytechnology 5 years further, E will be always faster and cheaper. Difference shown in every overtaking, E is just the more powerful tec. Combustion is very good, yes, but for me E makes more fun. Why? Cause its NOT the sound, that really gives you feeling. Its the kind of driving, acceleration. It simply is more convenient and does not need as much different parts to achieve this convenience. Again, its ONLY Batteries that give Combustion a slight advantage now. But i anticipate 1000 kms per charge and dropping prices very soon. It will even be cheaper some time.

the difference is throttle response… I hate turbos… you never feel really connected if you have to wait for an response of motor and gearbox. with electric cars you have immediate response
