In terms of how they would do physical, I mean they’ve done it multiple times with handhelds. Make the chip part basically the same but change other parts of the cart so that they can’t be inserted into the old system.
The problem I have with subscriptions like NSO is that you don't get to keep the games or game data whenever the service shuts down. Paying for NSO expansion for 8 years is $400. Virtual Console was way cheaper in the long run for most people.

It's weird watching all these youtubers talking about how Switch 2 is being announced just around the corner. Like... dude, they're not gonna announce it before Christmas. That said, the new Switch will have the same type of chip. I suspect a lot of old games will simply be able to perform better because the chip is more powerful. I suspect in some cases for big games like breath of the wild they might do upgraded options where they redo textures and stuff like that. In a lot of cases they can just change the max resolution games run at and they'll just naturally look better.
THIS was a big sell for me! Now I feel confident I can continue buying new games on cartridges and not make my life more complex (assuming this includes cartridges).
Not sure if it's likely for Nintendo to patch old games to run better on new hardware, but I'd be surprised if Metroid Prime 4 isn't getting it's own tailor made version for the new console.
This lets us know that some or all of the games coming or rumored will actually launch on switch 2.. smart move Nintendo. I'm betting old controllers and joycons will work also.
Its 2024, they no longer need to put a notch or something to stop people from putting a new cart in an old switch, they can be the exact same shape and just give an error message that says "not compatible with the original switch" on the screen or something along those lines?
Nintendo is the company that crammed a GBA cartridge slot onto the DS. Why would anybody think they might not make the new system fully backwards compatible with Switch?
You wouldn’t need a patch for faster loading times/more stable frame rates, if the hardware was faster and especially if the onboard hardware will support Switch games natively, and won’t be emulated. That should be a given for the existing library, so even if there isn’t a “pro mode patch” for games, we should expect faster loading times and less/no frame rate dips at launch. I’d expect/hope that they will allow download patches that improve things like graphics, fidelity, frame rate caps and maybe even support for higher resolution visuals, in whatever way they end up doing such a thing (probably some sort of AI upscaling with DLSS). I’m sure we’ll get plenty of ports that support a lot of these things being sold, so it’s unclear what any upgrades would look like from the get go as far as how much we’re going to pay for them.
Great to have DIRECT WORDED confirmation of bacwards compatiblity. I think they held of this long; because now they know they won't be selling that many more Switch systems; but they most certainly will be selling more Switch 1 games (especially with some of the best games still to come after decades of people waiting for ports and collections of Capcom's and other companies' finest). Although I am hoping Nintendo throws us a bone and sell us the Switch 2 dock months ahead of launch, and make it so that it can be used with the Switch 1 in docked mode to get stable 60ps in overclocked mode and then advertised that the Switch 2 will be able to run Switch 1 games at a stable 60fps in both docked and handheld mode, AS WELL as have DLSS patches for some of the more notable games. I mean; there has to be a reason that the Switch 1 had an "update dock firmware" option added to it about 2 years ago no? Then when the Switch 2 comes out; they can sell it without a dock for $300 and with the dock for $400. Oh and yes; carts will work as Nintendo has doubled down on phsyical game production and even partner up with LImited Run games officially (look it up) to help with this endeavor.
the think the details at a later date will be that some games will be enhanced. but it's up to the devs/publishers to do so. Nintendo games are the most likely ones to be updated like that
Considering it would be hardware back compat rather than any emulation, I'd suggest that 99% of games will work. The bigger question is will there be any boosts to old games?
NSO’s system is a symptom of the death of Virtual Console, not the cause. When everyone else realized they can package and sell their old games on multiple platforms without VC’s label, it became pointless to try to continue the model with just Nintendo’s first party lineup and whatever smattering of third party gets they had available.
The switch is still 50/50 physical and digital compared to the other platforms favouring digital so its unlikely that it'll be only digital when nintendo still heavily relies on boxed sales
@@sidescreamerful notice how they specifically only said "software" though. I fully expect backwards compatibility to be limited to digital, but i'd be happy to be wrong
@@ci4pp3rthat would be pure madness 😅 aint no way nintendo give the middle finger to literally half the fan base. 70 million people unable to play their switch games on switch 2? Not happening
So the fact that switch games will work on this leaves me to think this is ether a more powerful switch because switch games have games where you need to use detachable joycons, or this could be a more powerful home system with nunchucks like controller system like the Wii had.
3:44 Bro's literally only ever heard of Nintendo hardware. Nintendo's consoles aren't made in a vacuum, the software use to create these games are already implementing future-proofing technology to make them naturally run better on future hardware. Look at how many uncapped PS4 games run at a locked 60fps on PS5.
I understand what you're saying, but understand that he's specifically talking about Nintendo hardware here. GBA didn't improve performance of GB/C games, nor did the DS, nor did the 3DS improve DS games. Same with GameCube games on Wii and Wii games on Wii U.
@@icee113the only real performance boosting system I can think of is the New 3DS. It was essentially my monster hunter machine because it could run MH4U at a better frame rate than the old 3DS.
@@BlaizeTheDragon Exactly, and that's what it was designed to be. A system that enhances current games with (a few) exclusives of its own. Imo, I think part of it existing was an experiment so to speak, because not only is it the first time Nintendo hardware played previous Nintendo software better, it's the most recent. Which gives me hope this new Switch system is designed to do exactly that, but with a larger emphasis on phasing out the original and having genuine exclusives
@@icee113 Again, Nintendo's consoles aren't made in a vacuum. It's fine to compare the older hardware's backwards compatibility but the architecture of those systems has absolutely nothing in common with the architecture used to power modern hardware, most of which is inherently designed to be forward compatible and iterated upon.
I think many miss the point about playing old games on a new system. the only reason current games struggle is because of the hardware they run on, ram, the clock speeds and bottle necking for example. I would argue, any current games played on better hardware will automatically run much much better.....without and additional patches/changes.
You can run scarlet and violate on a pc, and it doesn't make it run any better. Some games are just bad games, and since Z-A is only being developed for switch 1, it's going to join them.
@ I agree with that. But can’t say that about 99% of games on Swhich. A broken game is a broken game, BOTW isn’t broken and would easily run better on newer hardware. Deku tree forest is a prime example of it choking.
The Switch's successor, named Super Nintendo Switch, will be announced in February 2025, it will be released in September 2025 with a Super Mario launch title. A new Zelda game will be announced shortly after with a release scheduled aptly in time for x-mas 2025.
Given how the new console will be compatible with Switch games, it’s likely that amiibo support could also return (games that support the feature like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Zelda: BOTW/TOTK, Smash Ultimate, etc. will likely be able to run on the new console).
@@shrekrealista5045 What original ones :D? Yeah trilogy is not that bad, still needs a bunch of updates. I meant to say would be cool to compare performance of GTA Trilogy on Switch vs Switch2 and all that.
Crossing my fingers that they add the SuperScope games to SNES at some point. Duck Hunt worked so well on Wii U with a Wii controller. I loved it and played it al the time.
8:44 100% agree Alex! I initially felt weird about not “owning” things. But “owning” only really meant for the time that particular console was my main console… if NSO is going to just continue to grow, I’m all in.
THis is great news, because it means they won't do anything weird and kooky like they did with the Wii U, and the Wii. I just hope they come out with a home version. If they skipped the screen, it could be an entry level model thing.
So glad the console wasn’t announced in October, the US election and its fallout will dominate conversation for the foreseeable. Let’s hope we’re not thrown into ww3 before the switch 2 gets released though 😅
The hope is that the successor will play OG Switch games more smoothly because that is indeed how it worked going 360 to Xbox One, and then One/PS4 to Series/PS5. Some games had specific patches to make use of the extra power of their successive systems, but all games that remained playable ran as well as they were originally programmed to be able to possibly do, i.e. eliminating frame and resolution drops.
@@takeyourheart114it's been obvious for a couple of years now.. The success of the switch 2 is reliant on backwards compatability.. No way people would be ok with buying a switch 2 only to start the drip feed of the same games over again to come over..

Good. I have a good collection of Switch games, the least I want is to get ANOTHER new Switch, and get this “successor” as well. (My Switch is, well, a little bit over used. I was waiting to hear about the new one before I decided to buy a new one…)
If I’m mistaken, I believe the Wii bumped the resolution of GameCube games. If I recall correctly. Didn’t have to worry about 60FPS boost since almost every Nintendo game already ran at 60 FPS.
The compatibility question for me is whether you can redownload digital games. Physical compatibility is nice but I've got digital games I don't want to buy again too
I think this will apply to both Physical and Digital games. I hope so because I believe we all should have our choice being included in the next system.
I went all digital with my current switch, would those be able to be ported to the new Switch using the same Nintendo Online account if it's backwards compatible?
I do think it would be nice to be able to buy retro games like the VC but if it was an option i would still choose the subscription service. I'm payibg £7.50 a year for the EP with a family membership and the n64 app is my second most played game on the switch
I'm still waiting for Switch 2 to play some games at higher resolution, more stable frame rates, and faster loading, like Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 3, etc.
15:28 I assumed the decision to use a mobile app for chat was tied somehow to child safety? Like a parent could be sure they weren’t chatting with someone online? But you’re probably right, it was just a system limitation and they didn’t want to tax the hardware.
I'm excited about the backwards compatibility! I am curious to hear your thoughts on what Nintendo may do with the new system. Do you think it will have motion detection? It seems to me they're using Alarmo as a technology bridge for the new system.
This is awesome. I was thinking of getting my 4-year-old a switch lite, since she loves playing her games on my OLED, but now I can just give it to her....when I get a switch 2 😉 I'll endure having to share for now lol
Why is this news? When did we ever think the switch 2 wasn’t going to be able to play switch games? I mean all the DS models were all backwards compatible with DS games?
Your random clips of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running at their buttery 60fps got me totally hyped for how likely it'd be that their next mainline entry could arrive as a release title. They've had PLENTY of time to make it happen, and they know it's a stupidly accessible game to have anyone and everyone simply flock to their new hardware. I'd genuinely be shocked if it wasn't part of the lineup.
You said NSO apps are slowing down. But are they really? Number of games added to the retro apps per year in North America: 2018: 29 2019: 48 2020: 21 2021: 41 2022: 41 2023: 51 2024: 47 as of October 28th. This year could end close to 55 games!
@QnjtGWonQNqVsbYyzjx4 I agree. Lately the updates have been for a single system. I won't mind if they occasionally do multiple systems at once again. At the beginning of this year I was expecting 4 maybe 5 N64 games this year. So glad I was wrong. I don't care too much for the Genesis app tbh, but I am glad it is available. They haven't added any games to that one since June of last year. They probably should add at least one so they can say they didn't miss adding a game to any of the retro apps in any calendar year.
heres the thing - Everyone wants a new Switch to play the latest games, right?? So if you want to play old games, wouldnt u just keep ur OG switch? BOOM Mic drop!! im the man!!
Back when the Switch came out, I was looking for something to play and tried Fortnite on it. I was pleasantly surprised to see the game's voice chat working perfectly with in ear headphones that had a built in mic and also sorely disappointed Nintendo never did the same thing for their games.
It will probably use the same cartridges because there’s no reason why not, the switch game cartridges got larger by the end of the life cycle, and as far as loading, cartridge is king right?
ts only Nintendo that you haven't seen back compat boosts recently. Both Xbox AND Sony have bost mode which makes older games on current gen consoles perform better. I don't see Nintendo charging for any of this. Either we get a boost mode (less likely) or they just provide bare bones back compat so the games run as they always have (more likely).
The cartridges are so tiny that it wouldn't take up much room if they decided to. For the bare minimum they could put one on the dock, or sell a switch cartridge reader as usb c accessory.
Kind of hoping they confirm the name to be Switch Too, Anaya it’s physically compatible with the original Switch, verifying some two screen rumors and you can use them together?

That said, the new Switch will have the same type of chip. I suspect a lot of old games will simply be able to perform better because the chip is more powerful. I suspect in some cases for big games like breath of the wild they might do upgraded options where they redo textures and stuff like that. In a lot of cases they can just change the max resolution games run at and they'll just naturally look better.

No it doesn't
@@Rusty84CVThat joke flew by you like a jet.
I have over 50 switch games , Switch 2 better be backward compatible lol
THIS was a big sell for me! Now I feel confident I can continue buying new games on cartridges and not make my life more complex (assuming this includes cartridges).
Games will be as big as a vinyl.
Already heard about it, but appreciate you guys making a video for anyone who hadn't. Also nice to listen to you guys discuss it.
I can't wait. I own so many games for the switch and can be put somewhat at ease
thank you for covering this!
Its 2024, they no longer need to put a notch or something to stop people from putting a new cart in an old switch, they can be the exact same shape and just give an error message that says "not compatible with the original switch" on the screen or something along those lines?
Oh awesome! Hearing this news and you guys cover it makes my day a lot better! Can’t wait for the next system.
Nintendo games are the most likely ones to be updated like that
Labo is also completely reliant on the IR camera, so even without physical changes, if you get rid of that then you'd lose compatibility.
Considering it would be hardware back compat rather than any emulation, I'd suggest that 99% of games will work. The bigger question is will there be any boosts to old games?
I don't get why so many people thought this wasn't gonna be the case.
Probably because about half the time, it isn't.
IR is used in WarioWare Move It, and I can't imagine life without it.
NSO’s system is a symptom of the death of Virtual Console, not the cause. When everyone else realized they can package and sell their old games on multiple platforms without VC’s label, it became pointless to try to continue the model with just Nintendo’s first party lineup and whatever smattering of third party gets they had available.
Physically though?
Digital is all fun and nice
but what about all those
piles of "Physical Cartridges"?
I think if it was going to be just digital, they would’ve specified.
@@ci4pp3r If so, i will not buy the Switch II. Would be a mess for many player.
@@ci4pp3rthat would be pure madness 😅 aint no way nintendo give the middle finger to literally half the fan base. 70 million people unable to play their switch games on switch 2? Not happening
It would be crazy not to, but it's nice to see official confirmation!
So the fact that switch games will work on this leaves me to think this is ether a more powerful switch because switch games have games where you need to use detachable joycons, or this could be a more powerful home system with nunchucks like controller system like the Wii had.
Good, I don't need to start my backlog again, I can just carry it over!
Imagine the Labo VR with a 1080p screen
They should make it where you can play DS and 3DS games that should be backwards compatible.
That’s like saying the controllers will have buttons. Backward compatibility is a given
My question is when will be Amico coming out?
I want to know if you can transfer all to the switch 2
Disagree BOTW is a crap game and always will be.
Well it won't run better automatically. Nintendo would have to release a patch to make it run better with the Switch 2 but Nintendo could find a way.
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 Would you be willing to pay for the upgrade ?
They really needed this. I have been waiting to buy switch games because I was scared that I would just have to buy them again for the switch 2
Why is this video 16 minutes long?? 😭 yall gave me all the info i need from the title alone
2:48 The idea of having GTA Trilogy on it already is so awesome for some reason
The original ones or the Defective Edition?
@@shrekrealista5045 What original ones :D? Yeah trilogy is not that bad, still needs a bunch of updates. I meant to say would be cool to compare performance of GTA Trilogy on Switch vs Switch2 and all that.
@@shrekrealista5045 Another missing game for Switch1 is GTA4 remaster. Switch2 probably gonna have GTA5 and GTA6 versions
This will definitely benefit Metroid Prime 4. I was convinced that would be the big launch title on the successor as well as on the switch
Crossing my fingers that they add the SuperScope games to SNES at some point. Duck Hunt worked so well on Wii U with a Wii controller. I loved it and played it al the time.
I'd love Duck Hunt with USB lightguns designed for modern displays.
Backwards compatible with the carts or just digital? That's important
I'm surprised Nintendo never released a dock only Switch with a Pro Controller bundled in instead of Joycons.
This news alone is already enough to get to me to preorder the damn thing.
So glad the console wasn’t announced in October, the US election and its fallout will dominate conversation for the foreseeable. Let’s hope we’re not thrown into ww3 before the switch 2 gets released though 😅
WW3? Really? It's all theatre. Been hearing it since the 1970s.
@@SandrosCoronado Ok 👍
Trump was there for 4 years before, remember ?
Remember when the last few years happened ? Yeah, not under Trump.
why does every person who didn’t get their candidate threaten ww3
On the brightside it'll be a portable so you can play it while drafted
I wonder if the Nintendo Switch will also work as an accessory to stream Nintendo Switch 2 games on it, like the PlayStation Portal
What????
The hope is that the successor will play OG Switch games more smoothly because that is indeed how it worked going 360 to Xbox One, and then One/PS4 to Series/PS5. Some games had specific patches to make use of the extra power of their successive systems, but all games that remained playable ran as well as they were originally programmed to be able to possibly do, i.e. eliminating frame and resolution drops.
Totally expected. Maybe not for people who follow and watch sensationalist content only made for clicks and drama. (Not NLife you guys are cool.)
Well from a guy that does non of those. I didn't expect this considering they keep taking down emulators and stuff
What does illegal emulators have to do with BC?
@@takeyourheart114it's been obvious for a couple of years now.. The success of the switch 2 is reliant on backwards compatability.. No way people would be ok with buying a switch 2 only to start the drip feed of the same games over again to come over..
I get so excited when I hear "Hello there lovely people"
I'm not surprised, but it's so AWESOME to see that Switch 2 will play Switch games too it's just obvious just like in a good old days with DS/3DS and Wii/Wii U this is a PERFECT choise thank you Nintendo! 😆❤
So it will flop like the 3DS and Wii u then.
@borisgrishenko9430 no it will not flop because it's Switch a SUCCEFFUL console
@@Leopez02 Just because the Switch is a success doesn't mean the next console won't flop. Nintendo has a poor track for launching new systems.
He’s referring to some games may have cross play possibilities, games, where you can play on the switch to against people with the original switch online
I have a feeling the next switch will be called the switch pro.
Good. I have a good collection of Switch games, the least I want is to get ANOTHER new Switch, and get this “successor” as well. (My Switch is, well, a little bit over used. I was waiting to hear about the new one before I decided to buy a new one…)
Good to hear as I have a huge backlog of Switch games that can now continue on as untouched Switch 2 backlog 😂
Software or hardware? There is a diffrence tho can i use the same cartrages in switch 2
If I’m mistaken, I believe the Wii bumped the resolution of GameCube games. If I recall correctly. Didn’t have to worry about 60FPS boost since almost every Nintendo game already ran at 60 FPS.
Metal Arms is a little more stable on Wii than on Gamecube. There you have it.
Considering Furukawa stated already, that he wanted to have a smooth transition with the account system, I would think so.
0:09 I literally just woke up😂
This was at 9 pm during the night, I was watching the election
I just hope we can also transfer save data to the switch 2 from the switch.
Hoping backwards compatibility runs original software at docked detail in handheld mode
“Nintendo Switch software” that is a careful choice of words they used.
Will switch 2 have OLED?
I do think it would be nice to be able to buy retro games like the VC but if it was an option i would still choose the subscription service. I'm payibg £7.50 a year for the EP with a family membership and the n64 app is my second most played game on the switch
My question is… will there be a new RingFit Adventure RingCon that fits the new joycons?
I'm still waiting for Switch 2 to play some games at higher resolution, more stable frame rates, and faster loading, like Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 3, etc.
0:06 yup, nothing else happened lately
I imagine if Nintendo rebrands NSO it will just be called Nintendo Online
If you have gamepass you can buy games on that service at a discount. Nintendo should add a virtual library but make games discounted if you have nso
Is really nice how Nintendo officially confirmed it, i'm looking forward for more Switch 2 news!
You said NSO apps are slowing down. But are they really? Number of games added to the retro apps per year in North America:
2018: 29
2019: 48
2020: 21
2021: 41
2022: 41
2023: 51
2024: 47 as of October 28th.
This year could end close to 55 games!
@@WileyFoxTiger They should really focus on the N64 and especially Game Boy / Game Boy Advance for the remaining of the generation.
Same here. If I wanted to play Switch games I would just my Switch and save the money.
Back when the Switch came out, I was looking for something to play and tried Fortnite on it. I was pleasantly surprised to see the game's voice chat working perfectly with in ear headphones that had a built in mic and also sorely disappointed Nintendo never did the same thing for their games.
I doubt they'll even change the joycon format. Maybe new ones with extra features, but still retro compatible.
I wondered if it will be like the DS taking gameboy cartridges. Perhaps a separate port?
The cartridges are so tiny that it wouldn't take up much room if they decided to. For the bare minimum they could put one on the dock, or sell a switch cartridge reader as usb c accessory.
Have you asked yourself it could be like the 3DS taking DS cartridges on the same port?
I'm wondering if controller will work on the successor
Kind of hoping they confirm the name to be Switch Too, Anaya it’s physically compatible with the original Switch, verifying some two screen rumors and you can use them together?
Will we be able to play the new game cards with the current switch OLED?
