@@captainanopheles4307 it’s not a big deal.
The fact that Jordan Peele and his production team took this film away from Netflix just to put it on the big screen is so good.
I'm so excited that Peele is partnered with Kojima make his Silent Hill game. Rumor is Trent Reznor is involved too.
Really? That’s awesome. Can you post a link?
But this review makes it sound like this shouldve stayed a netflix movie..
@@briceticker6721I think that's his point.
Peele and Michael Flanagan are sooooo overrated
Fun Fact: This movie was originally going to be completed and released for Netflix though Jordan Peele (who was producer on the film) saw the movie and bought the film through his production company Monkeypaw Productions and released it in theatres cause he thought the film deserved to be on the big screen, props to him
That explains the obnoxious blinding of color red 🤣
@@MrRobeStern64fr
@@deadn00b1like red is my favorite color but my god it doesn’t mean I want my eyes to see that only color🤣
Meh…
Two identical top comments lol. Although a correction is that Jordan Peele was not the producer on the film. He simply bought it then stamped his name on it as you said.
I thought the shaky cam was intentional. Without trying to spoil anything, there's a point in the movie where the action and camera work becomes much more focused and steady and it lasts all the way until the end. It mirrors the main character's emotions and headspace. It was a thematic choice.
Yea now as you mentioned it it makes sense
Fun Fact: Dev Patel began training in Taekwando when he was 10 years old. He earned a 1st dan black belt in March 2006 at the age of 16.
IMDB trivia
Ahh, that's cool! So he actually knows what he's doing. Not just a fake action star.
@@krs4193Taekwondo isn’t combat practical, it’s mostly just a performance art. It’s still very challenging to learn though, so props to him.
@@Kudos2_Mewhat's your opinion on other martial arts combat practicality? Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Wing Chung etc...
@@coloradoyehti1538 Well there are so many variations of Kung Fu. Most Kung Fu is a combination between showmanship and practical application. Usually a great instructor will teach you how to apply what you’ve learned in fighting. And this ultimately affects how practical it is.
Karate tends to be a bit more on the showmanship side these days, but also has some practical concepts you can use in a fight (blocking, intercepting a punch).
Anything that is based mostly on pressure points, grappling, or intercepting a punch is likely the most practical. So Jiujitsu, Aikido, or mixed martial arts tend to have practical application built into them.
Taekwondo used to have some of these concepts, but is now mostly used for exercise and performing. Even in Korea it’s commonly done by kids just for exercise and to stay in shape-not for self defense.

Nicholas and Dev were huge before these roles...
I thought the use of shaky cam was actually handled well considering the director wanted to convey the uncomfortably claustrophobic and anxiety-induced feeling from the protagonist’s pov.
**Minor spoilers down**
In the first half of the movie, he hadn’t found confidence and strength to fully commit to murdering his enemy, so his mind was scattered and barely escaped the fight. But in the latter half of the movie, he builds his confidence, strength and the conviction to follow through with his plan, so the camera felt more steady and smooth following the action. The character arc and emotional centre of the protagonist was executed so beautifully well.. can’t really relate but there were moments in here I forgot Dev was acting and felt like I was invading someone’s privacy as he dealt with his demons.
Yeah I think Jeremy doesn’t really care about these artistic choices and just wants a good time with his movies. Should just stick to watching high budget clean action with stuff like John wick or mission impossibl.😊
Yh I like the camera shake . Makes it feel more gritty which I think the movie was going for
This was my thoughts exactly regarding the shaky cam, surprised Jeremy didn’t notice it. Lots of Dutch angles too
I agree. Saw the movie yesterday with my GF and I thought it was fantastic. It was inspired a bit by John Wick yes, but he took a very different approach and is immensly creative with the camera work. Something John Wick lacked of big time. This movie was a blast. The emotional turmoil the guy was enduring, to get to his goal and the way it represented was marvelous. Seldomly have I seen a movie that manages creativity and storytelling as well as a fantastic edit so well. It is not overhyped at all, considering the movie only cost 15 million dollars. Jeremy Jahns has no fucking clue about filmmaking and storytelling. This shows in many of his reviews.
@@stevenramirez9957 Exactly, the shaky cam was so well handles that everything was visible. Dont know what his gripe is.
Apparently he had issues filming this movie and had to shoot some of the action sequences on an iPhone so that’s why it looks like it was shot by two different cinematographers because it was shot by two different cameras
Hence why editing is the biggest factor of if a movie is good or not. All movies are trash until edited
in that situation, it would probably be better to sort the camera issues out, and _not_ film half the movie on a phone 😑
@@Sam_T2000you’d be surprised how good phone cameras are nowadays.
Some of it was also filmed by a stunt man, the lift sequence.
Dev was actually interviewed and he said the shaky cam @ the beginning was done on purpose. It was to symbolize the weakness and lack of confidence of “the kid”. As he gets stronger, the camera changes to a fixed camera and the last big hooray, is a complete 180.
I'm so glad Dev got to release this movie in theaters. This movie really shouldn't have been able to be made with everything that went wrong on set. Can't wait to watch this movie later today.
Yes. Can't wait to watch shaky cam fight scenes in the theatre.
@@PopsiCOLE that's exactly what I commented. What's the issue?
@@Gaganpreet708 People hate shaky cam fight scenes…
@@windowsVD That is true. I strongly believe Dev opted to go this route for a few reasons. He was working with extremely limited recording equipment since all his cameras broke. Perhaps shaky cam was the only way for the fights sequences to look presentable given what he was working with? Alternatively, the shakycam could have been a direct result of the subpar camera equipment. Another thing to note, this is his directorial debut. Perhaps he assumed this route would better align with his vision? Criticism is very important for amateur filmmakers. Hopefully for his next projects he keeps the keeps the public disdain for these type of fight scenes in mind.
Tdlr I'm willing to excuse the shaky cam this time because of a first time director facing nightmare productions. If this was a James Cameron or Spielberg movie, I would be extremely upset.
@@Gaganpreet708 Good to know that there's a possibility of reason on why it was done. I don't particularly hate shaky cam but when it's overused, I tend to just look away from the movie and do something else until the fight scene is done.
I'm honestly glad Dev Patel is still going strong, he was incredible in Slumdog Millionaire and managed to push through the disaster that is the Last Airbender movie.
He was incredible in Lion
@@signalfire15yeah, what I mean is almost everyone who worked on TLA could never get work again, that's how bad and cursed the film was.

Those four seconds of dead air at 1:58-2:02 worried me a bit, thought the review would take a negative turn, but I'm glad Jeremy liked it overall.
No disrespect but I don't think Jeremys opinion should sway you either way. Always see the film for yourself because your pov is just as important
@@aliens22 Oh yes, believe me I am very much of the "see it for myself" demographic. I more so watch critics like Jeremy just to get an idea of what I'm in for/general consensus, so that way I may compare it to my own feelings later.
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRoseIn this regard I’m the opposite of you. Unless I’m really on the fence about seeing a movie, I go watch it in theaters or on streaming first and then watch reviews like this. Mainly because I want to see how my opinion aligns with what the critics thought rather than going in with any biases or opinions that others have about the movie. That’s just me though.
@@brionesb That's cool, and besides, your route is probably the better way of going about it anyway, because I'll admit that I *have* had certain biases before going into a film sometimes. 🤷♀
Next chapter of Jeremy’s shaky cam rants😹 love it, we’re here for it man!
I don't think a lot of people pick up the idea of why the shaky cam is utilized for the story.
Let's make this clear, a LOT of films use shaky cams for the wrong reasons and I will admit with Monkey Man having a little too much for my personal liking. However the first half of the film, Dev Patel's character has a goal that only appeals to himself and stumbles so much when we get to that bathroom scene. The claustrophobia with the amount of people in the night club
Then he had to learn to fight with FOCUS and revenge for a better cause. Once you get to the last quarter of the film, the action sequences now have wider shots and fewer people surrounding the area
Totally agree with you, i noticed that too. Its the finer details in this movie that you really need to pay attention to
John Woke
No shot, I went to the premier last night in Hollywood and it was the craziest experience ever. Dev was such a humble and awesome dude.
Curious how it was received at the premier? I was pretty disappointed in the movie, the story particularly. The pacing was not good either. Some great parts of course, but 6/10 for me, and it’s also going to piss a lot of people off who think this is an action movie.
Stop the cap, it was mid at best
@@kyleconnor2759 My hype was definitely elevated just being there and at the after party. I’m gonna see it again this weekend with friends for a more objective opinion ahaha. Thanks for your review Jeremy. Apparently, the movie was forced to move shooting locations part way through Production, and the shaky camera was a compromise they had to make at the new location.
Having seen it now. I enjoyed this IMMENSELY. It wasn’t a perfect film but I didn’t understand the complaints about the second act. I absolutely loved and it and thought it framed the mirrored acts well and kept pacing from being exhausting. Also shout to the editor, cinematographer, lighting designer and sound designer. Apart from the shaky cam we need to talk about how amazing this thing looks throughout most of its runtime. There were also points in the shaky cam where it worked for me. It had the Monty oum touch to just follow the momentum.
Dev Patel needs another film ASAP, I wanna see his style evolve.
Facts! I wanna see what else he does!
Fun fact: Hanuman is the king of monkeys in Indian's ancient folklore known as "Ram ma ya na" and also got adopted as a most famous Thai's folklore in similar name "Ram ma kean". He was also referred in the first Black Panther by M'Baku when he cried "Praise Hanuman!".
Hanuman Ji is not the king, he’s the commander of the “vanar” army
-praise- Glory to Hauman
Lord Hanuman is actually not the king, that's Vali and later his brother Sugriva. He is the loyal servant of Lord Rama, who is the titular protagonist of the epic "Ramayana". According to Hindu Mythology Hanuman would be the next God of Creation(Brahma) after the present cycle ends.
But Hanuman is the inspiration for Monkey King, Sun wukong. He is actually a very popular and beloved god here in India.
@@oompie815I understand this reference
It's one word "Ramayan" not 4 separate words. And it's not simply folklore. It's one of 2 most important epics of Hinduism
I actually loved the claustrophobia in the shots! I felt it added to the chaotic vibe. Happy this movie exists, i had a great time!
Revenge? That old western that was one of the inspirations for the Indiana Jones character, "Nevada Smith" with Steve McQueen. Because when you want a good revenge tale sometimes you need horsies. 🐴
I saw it today, I barely see movies on opening day. I agree, shaky cam and less gunplay than I thought. Brutal fighting sure, it was fine but I was expecting more
Yikes
Favorite revenge movie will forever be Hard Candy. It's visceral and weird and the way it plays with uncertain guilt, the predator/prey dyanmic, etc. is fantastic.
Good choice
Yes thank you for calling out the shakycam in the movie. I absolutely detested it. It may have been a production issue but it really made me physically unwell at one point in the movie. Absolutely agree with your assessment on this one - the overly claustrophobic zoomed in shots were inexplicable to me too.
Everything you said about this movie is exactly how I felt watching it.
Things I didn’t notice that I felt were off whilst watching and as soon as you said it (the close ups and poor exposition) just hit home.

I don't like every aspect of the opening, particularly his stuff with his wife, but that build-up was necessary. Plus, I really like the pop star security sequence and of course, the whole build-up from the moment his daughter arrives in, uh, Paris?
And from there it's just phenomenal. The dialogue, the acting, the action sequences. The surveillance, interrogations, requests to find information from friends and strangers and enemies.

You have to know India to know why this movie is good? It is a critical commentary on current India. Spoiler alert*** Sovereign party mimics the current party in power known as BJP. Police corruption, nexus with politicians, infusion of religion and hating on transgenders is a commentary on the social fabric of India. The aussie guy represents colonizers who rather then solving these issues took advantage of it. It was also banned in India. The bad are the fast camera edits that are overdone and some of the subtitles that make no sense to whom that know the hindi language.

I am from India and I must clear the misconceptions about caste system in India. Yes there is in rural areas but we have come a long way towards equality through policies and society in general moving on. Also caste system does not only belong to Hindu community, you can be a Muslim, Christian or Sikh and still have the same caste system.
But this movie says caste system is everywhere in India is like saying every white American is Racist today . That's obviously not true, the last embers of racism or castism left shouldn't be inflamed in my opinion.
Majority of us are good people striving for equality and a better life. And not having one single representation of them in this movie is malicious or plain ignorant.
Super excited to see this. Been a fan of Dev Patel since Skins.
They killed his monkey... His dead wife gave him that monkey... Props to Jordan Peele for pillaging Netflix.
I'm not going to lie. This movie was mediocre. I like dev Patel, but the story just fell flat for me. The shaky cam and close ups were annoying and pulled me out of the action and story. The characters just were meh. I couldn't connect to anyone, maybe bc there was very little development of their characters other than 3 of them. Like you said, the movie starts with some intriguing story and action, then starts to pull its punches until the last 30 minutes. I agree with what you said about the trailer and expectations. These reasons are why I felt this way towards the film.
So far people seem to either love the movie or are extremely “meh” about it. I’m curious to see how this will impact the movie’s legs at the box office.
Concerning your gripes with the shaky-cam, sure, everyone can appreciate long wide action shots that show everything, but Dev took another approach. I felt it really served the out-of-control frenetic energy of its scenes, and it works because the editing and rhythm give a throughline for the many wild cuts. It is a RIDE!
And when the film takes a breather it doesn't lull, it gives the necessary space for characters to process all the wild shit.
I enjoyed the movie as well but 100% agree with you about the extreme closeups and shaky cam. Had this film been shot with a bit more distance between the camera and the actors, I think this could have hit much stronger.
They do it to hide bad choreography. Most actors have zero clue when it comes to even a basic jab.

Dev Patel said the reason for the different cinematography. The reason for the shaky cam was their equipment kept breaking and by the end of the film they were out of equipment and did not have time to get new equipment their so he had to use the camera on his phone to finish the film.
You don’t need good equipment to get steady camera work. You can pretty easily film a coherent fight scene on your phone so long as your actors are well-rehearsed and you did some minimal camera blocking for the fights. Source: I went to film school.
I get that this film had a lot of production problems, but I feel like people are beginning to make excuses for the shoddy camera work.

@ 2:36, The "shakey cam" you are referring to was because there was a stunt guy operating one of the cameras. Someone from the stunt crew's true passion was cinematography. Dev Patel said he would often find him dabbling in it while on set, messin' with cameras and setting up previzes before stunt scenes. So Patel decided to put a camera in his hands during a bunch of the fight scenes. So he could do stunts while filming, like rolling on the ground with the camera and "getting under the armpit of the action," Dev explains. So @ 3:05, technically, there was only 1 cinematographer, but there were 2 camera operators.
