I think Rosamond is a female example of "Failure to Launch". Throught the novel, she treats people around her like playthings. So I guess she thinks she loves Lydgate. BUT I have only read the novel once. Maybe I would see her with different eyes on re-read.

And what a good sport he is! I wish I could convince my husband to read Victorian literature & discuss it with me.

Kate-I have to go with David! 😂 I think Rosamund truly believed herself in love with Lydgate! The scene where she cries in his arms, I believe her to be self-delusional but sincere.
I reread Middlemarch last year and this is what I wrote in chapter 59 “Rosamunde is spoiled, marries for money not love, flirts, selfish and believes she is above everyone.” This is another great video! Thank you both, so much🧡

It's been 7 years, so I definitely am due for a reread of Middlemarch.
So much fun! I agree with David re: Ladislaw, especially as he puts Dorothea in a difficult position with Casaubon. And Casaubon's will is the proof. Re: Rosamond: she's in love with the idea of getting married to a leading man of the community. She doesn't know what loving a spouse really entails. It is forgiveable at first, but she doesn't grow up until the end of the book, and by then it's too little too late for the marriage. Celia seems to be a way for Eliot to show flaws in Dorothea's character in a gentle way.
I'm going to start reading this again today!!!!
What a great discussion! I always enjoy it when you and David do a reviewI and loved that you had such varying opinions on many of the characters but backed them up so thoughtfully. I read Middlemarch in 2018 so my memory isn’t great but I believe I was also unsure about Dorothea marrying again although Will makes her so happy. I think my favorite character might be Mrs Cadwallder with her wit and self-effacing gossip but I find the female characters generally are the most distinctive and beautifully drawn. I definitely need to reread!

Loved the discussion about tainted money and integrity! I always thought it was more a question of 'snobbery' than integrity to be honest (i.e., a pawn shop is not a respectable business not because it's immoral but because it's considered to be 'vulgar').
Ahhh, this is a good nuance to add! That makes a lot of sense that it would have been a much less refined source of income.

When I first watched this video, I realized that I hadn't read Middlemarch in six years. I didn't like it at all at that time long ago. Then I watched THIS video and started to read it for the second time, and I LOVED it this time around. I just finished it less than an hour ago and I immediately came to rewatch this video of you and your husband giving your thoughts on it. So a HUGE THANK YOU to you both 😊

Interesting comment about the lack of plot, Anthony Trollope in his autobiography says the same thing. He admires George Eliot but says she doesn't do plot!
I like the scene where Dorothea and Ladislaw get together as well, because I'd always liked windy days where you can see the paler underside of the leaves, and then George Eliot actually described it that way.
I agree that Rosamond is way worse than Tertius. I felt really bad for him being trapped in a marriage where his wife will not respect him. There was a sad line about how it would be more painful to him to fall out of love with Rosamond than to know that she had ceased to love and respect him.
I also find George Eliot's prose more serious, except for the line that said someone's jaw fell like a barometer. That made me chuckle.

I agree with you Kate about Rosamond. Fishing for a husband. I loved David's thoughts. I agree that Dorothea would've been better left unmarried. But Adam Bede should have never married Dinah either.
I'll be curious how many votes for and against Rosamond being in love come in!
I'm too much of a hopeless romantic and was very happy with Adam's ending. Do you wish he married someone else or think his character should have been a perpetual bachelor?
I was surprised when David said he would have preferred Dorothea not to be married, but then I found myself agreeing with him too!

Such a lovely discussion! Mr Garth is my favorite character and I do love Fred and Mary together! ❤ The others are just incredibly sad. Well, I was not mad about Dorothea and Will. I’m always surprised at how many dislike him, but I thought he was complicated and will settle down with someone like Dorothea.

Sorry but I also think Rosamond thinks she's in love with Lydgate at the beginning 😅 She is ambitious and kind of picks him before she knows him but I still think she believes she's in love. I do think she's worse than Lydgate on the whole but at the same time he was wrong to marry her when he'd decided not to get married yet. He sort of gets hurried into it but I think that's his own fault really. But mainly I think their problem is that they have a wrong idea of each other and then get upset when that ideal isn't fulfilled. I feel for Lydgate though, his dreams are the ones that get the most thoroughly crushed 😢 This was a really good video (if slightly painful because Middlemarch is my favourite book of all time and I think it's perfect 😂)

I thought Dr Lydgate had ideas about women which prevented him from wisely choosing a mate. I kind of think he got what he deserved because he really didn’t respect women. Even though I did like a lot about Lydgate. He did have some high opinions of himself which were not realistic.
I do think Rosamunde believed that she was in love.
