36:00 On the eldrazification, I really like it. Both of the first two modern horizons sets were made with lots of callback cards that update new cards with new flavor. Giver of Runes, Ignoble Hierarch, Winding Way, Brainstone. In my opinion it’s one of the best parts of the sets, holding them together with nostalgia. And we get great 8-“card name” decks out of them, which is always fun. With this set, they’re just adding an extra layer of cohesion to the callbacks, by making them all eldrazi themed. I’m all for it
@@thegreatmaximilian If a triggered ability of a colorless spell you control or another colorless permanent you control triggers, that ability triggers an additional time. ..or another colorless permanent you control. The janky fetches from Definitely Not Ravnica But With The Mob have triggered abilities, even if they're only getting basics. So that's something cute you can do. Richard named like three things that don't work because they have activated abilities and not triggered abilities, so it's clear that he didn't have the card in front of him.
Yes. Magiccon Chicago was a ton of fun. They did get me to spend way more than I intended to though. But I met Seth and Crim, Gavin Verhey, MaRo, Brian Kibbler, Voxy, game Knights... got to hold a black lotus. It was a blast.
Regarding Eldrazi - two titans were "dead", ulamog and kozilek. Emrakul is in the moon, but she essentially closed herself. Tamyo couldn't do it for whatever reason, so she took control of her to cast the spell off the scroll she was holding and closed herself. Which is actually really cool, too bad nothing was done with it yet.
If you phase out Disciple of Caelus Nin during the end step before your turn, everything you have phased out will phase in with Disciple. So you can sort of soft lock some permanents your opponents control
Another option is to blink it with an effect that returns it at the beginning of the next end step. Exile it during the end step of the person before you, then your permanents phase in at the start of your turn, and Disciple comes back in your end step, locking the rest of the table out.
As a former Yugioh player i have to correct some misinformation from Richard. There is a rotation, its called the quarterly ban list that bans the key cards from the top 1-3 meta decks. That also just so happen to be when they release a new set with 2-3 new archtypes that happen to be the new top meta decks.
I really like the callbacks, as long as the name makes sense for the card if you don't get the reference. So like, Nulldrfiter makes sense for that card anyway. The fact that it's also a reference to an older card is cool.
The thing is if I go to a convention I don't need to make my own fun. Like NYCC is typically about the same price (less before taxes) and I don't need to pay extra to get way more services. Yeah I can find people to play with or just find internet celebrities I like, but I can also do other stuff the con actually puts money into. The other big thing is travel. For most people this isn't 75 dollars. It's 75 dollars, plus travel and hotel costs. Comparing it to another con or Disneyland makes the value SO MUCH worse.
I think it's about getting the right level of humidity. I'll have to check with Richard to make sure, but I assume the idea is to use humidity packs to get the cards humidity level back to whatever it was when the card was created, which will flatten it. It seems like the major issue with curling comes from humidity levels being different around the world. The cards are flat when they are created, but if you live somewhere with a different level of humidity the cards will curl. If you get the humidity right they'll straighten back out.
Copy and Cast are the 2 different ways to get spells onto the stack. Echoes of Eternity will double your Ulamog cast trigger, and it will copy the Ulamog spell, but the copy Ulamog won't have the cast trigger at all.
Sparky is the goldfish bot on MTGArena. You can play against sparky to test a deck out if you want to. Plays monocolor decks with very basic spells as far as I know.
on Arena, "Sparky" is the friendly intro guide voice that teaches you how to play / the bot that plays some basic decks against you if you want to play against a bot rather than real people. She's not a very good "magic player" but I think that's intentional, since she's meant to play against brand new players.
On the "Cards we are happy are rotating out" for me its Memory Deluge, that card just fixes your hand so much AND it has flashback because why not. I feel like Wizzards at some point forgot that very powerful cards are meant to come with a drawback and not be all upside like even Sheoldred you can answear her when she is played or on your upkeep and she does nothing.
They didn't forget it, that hasn't really been the case for like at least 2 decades. The shift in design towards midrange creature combat is why what you say hasn't been true since like 2003
I mostly play historic brawl (a substitute until they allow for proper commander) and there are a fair number of alchemy cards are kind of miserable to play against. I get the desire to experiment with new designs for arena only cards, but it feels like there is basically no attempt to balance them
There are like hundreds of problematic non-alchemy cards in brawl. The new mh3 set looks so ridiculously powerful that it's going to nuke whatever meta brawl has right now from orbit.
For the timing on Disciple of Caelus Nin you can utilize something like Long Road Home, or Otherwordly Journey. To blink it on the end step of your opponents turn and then it returns on your end step. Leaving only you to phase back in.
1:00:17 Richard just made a devious plan and projected it on other magic players. Man's is fighting shadow demons. I think Commander as a format is proof players don't go for the sweatiest peak value option because if we did cedh would just be commander.
Heist has some really effective counters at least. Any bounce spell or cards like Soul Partition and Reprieve give you the card back, since you own it. It's essentially adding card advantage to efficiently costed cards (ie. Reprieve becomes a 2 mana draw 2 and hard counterspell)
there is absolutely a way to phase in your stuff back with disciple while not giving back opponent's stuff... you have to blink the disciple at the end of the last end step before your turn with an effect that returns it to the battlefiled by the next end step... you'll need something that works at instant speed and does that.... you could run it with Astral Drift or Astral Slide... there's flickerform, Eerie interlude.... etc, etc, etc. play that alongside stuff like Sundial of the infinite if you want the trigger to fizzle in your turn after the blink
1. I think the best way to fix Heist is to make it work like Thief of Sanity's trigger. (And also give Thief of Sanity Heist.) 2. I would *definitely* like to see you guys compete on Commander Clash to see who can abuse Disciple of Nin the most.
I'm going to MCC for the first time and I bought a premium ticket. What I didn't know was that I also had to pay for constructed events that sometimes cost more than the con tickets themselves. Playing draft or sealed was roughly the price for the boosters times 1.5.
Here’s quite a fun coincidence. Hearthstone released their own cowboy themed set a couple months ago and one of the cards is a really conditional heist card, Benevolent banker. It only works if you play the card on the exact turn it comes into your hand and thus activates its “Quickdraw” effect which is exactly like how heist works, steals a card discovered from 3 options from the other player deck. If you don’t play it on that turn however, then it only discovers a card from your own deck. It’s attached to a whatever stated body and isn’t really good because QuickDraw is so awkward to use and priest (the class it’s restricted to) has better means of searching cards so who cares.
With disciple of caelis nin you can teferi protection in opponents end step and then in your upkeep all your stuff phases in and your opponent's stuff remains phased out. It's a combo I love to play
If you phase out your disciple of Caelus nin by another method on an opponent’s end step, would that work to be assymetrical? Seems like a lot of work tho
If you during the last end phase prior to your turn exile Disciple of Nin with a beginning of end phase return spell, you get all your permanents but continue to lock out your opponents.
@MTGGoldfishPodcast I thought this set was supposed to happen in the past like Magic Origins, due to all of the flip walkers. It's Ajani before his spark ignited, etc.

I don't get the complaints about Sheoldred in Standard. In the Top 8 of Pro Tour OTJ, there were a total of two Sheoldreds and they were both singleton copies in the SIDEBAORD of 4C Legend decks.
Atraxa is the only ban I would like to see as Sheoldred is fine with the amount of removal in standard when rotation happens in August. Everything else seems fine but ramping to an Atraxa that stacks your hand with 4 new cards is hard to overcome in standard.
