Hey guys! Here's my review on the new Army Painter Speedpaints range! These paints have been reviewed by numerous channels, with differing results, but as my channel is all about getting through your backlog and painting armies fast-I felt I needed to add my thoughts!
Overall I was impressed! I feel like some of the myths about speedpaints reactivating just didn't happen for me, perhaps some people are overworking the paints or expecting too much from them but if they're used how they're intended-as a way to speed through painting many models while still giving great results-they work great!

Great review! Unfortunately I encountered some serious issues with reactivation. Let me explain: A Pox Walker's pants had dried to a great shade of orange thanks to Fire Giant Orange. And a runner from Zombicide had fancy sneakers thanks to Blood Red. Unfortunately, the Speedpaints reactivate even after days when colors are applied again. That is, the gray base on which some Blood Red had run cannot simply be painted over in gray. Even with two attempts at a daily interval, the red always came back to the surface and only a highly opaque dark gray tone from the old GW Foundations series provided a remedy. Shoelaces, soles and decorative stripes, painted with the otherwise very well covering Vallejo Silver Grey, became pale pink. Likewise the beige overpainted belt pouches and maggots of the Pox Walker, which showed an orange cast.
@@TheSilentW I've had the same issues myself, even with citadels contrast paints. What I've done to work around it is once I've completed all of my speed/contrast paints base coats, I spray the entire figure with a clear coat of matte varnish. Once that's dry I'm free to use whatever washes or highlight paints I want without fear of reactivating the base coats underneath. Then another spray of matte varnish and your done.
How did you avoid bleed with these paints? Did you let the colors dry before adding a new color?
@@flyboymilligan2999 hey, if your just painting one mini you have to let each color dry completely before moving on to another one otherwise the colors will bleed into each other. If your painting multiple minis in an assembly line fashion then each color should be dry by the time you get to the next color. Then when all the base colors have been applied and are dry I spray the mini with matte varnish to lock in all of the speed/contrast paints and once the varnish coat is dry I apply washes, highlights etc and then complete the process with a final coat of matte varnish. Hope this long winded explanation helps you out lol.
Those speed paints look deadly. I think the problem I had with them at first was that all the reviews on youtube showed 1 model painted in one colour. It really helps seeing them all on a complete model set.

Now THIS is the sort of video that will help people using AP Speed Paints. I have difficulty painting minis due to having cerebral palsy, but enjoy the process even though my work might not look the best. I have been using the Mega Set on Zombicide 2nd edition and one coat is working out really well. I usually shade with Nuln Oil and then try a dry brush, but I might try the highlight techniques you have shown. I think my reluctance is mainly out of fear that I mess up a reasonably good tabletop standard. Thank you for the review!

if you're struggling with shaky hands, i have a speedpaint suggestion. i use it mostly for convenience and ease since im a beginner painter, but it might make your life a lot simpler. i spray base in a lightish grey, and then spray my highlights in pure white from like 3/4'ths of a meter away very gently from above in a slight angle.
also when i paint i always go inside out, speedpaints on large area's, textured area's, etc, and then finish off with the raised area's in regular acrylics (and a last wash) as they cover up any mistakes ive made when brushing on the speedpaints, and its much easier to avoid getting paint where it shouldnt be on raised area's.

Excellent video, informative and interesting and the best Speedpaint video I've watched. The minis turned out great too, much better to see the start to finish results than single colour test minis. I preordered the Mega set and it's renewed my interest in painting the boxes full of unpainted minis collected over the years.

I've been a little wary getting into using mine, for some reason, so watching this video helped enthuse me to dive back in and start getting through some of my games with larger mini counts that just need to be "better than grey", and not some sort of exercise in burnout through perfection like my painting often turns into!

Excellent. I'm a big fan of these paints as well - and I've had a ton of luck with the Contrast+ painting method. Using Contrast / Speed Paints as my base coat is so much more enjoyable than establishing my base coats with 'two thin coats' - and then layering up over top of them and they look amazing.
Sounds like me and you paint in a very similar manor.
Thank you so much for doing a mini in parts. I’ve been so confused about speed paints, preciously, because every video I’ve seen is someone just slattering an entire figure in it. I picked up the Army Painter mega speed paint set today and while I’m still sorting out what colors look like (probably should get some cheap bases, prime and use it as a reference. That said I am amazed how well the stuff works, honestly for just the faces alone it is a lifesaver. The process is just so easy and looks nice, especially if you’re doing something like space marines are the guard where you’re doing a lot of units that are fairly similar in colors. Honestly I’ve kind of been on a hiatus from painting just because the time involved and just how slow I was going and this changes everything. I just wish there was a conversion chart for the speed paint from Citadel to army painter. I know there is a general comparison chart, but that only covers the standard paint not speed paint.
I guess the only downside is that I’m going to have to either strip the primer off some figures I’ve done earlier or just re-prime it with matte white. I accidentally tried it on a black prime unit before I realized you can only use a light primer color.
Have you tried it on any vehicles yet?
Really glad you liked the video pal. Don’t waste bases try in out all the colours. Just buy a packet of plastic spoons. I have painted some walkers using contrast paints and they tired out great. But haven’t had the chance with speed paints yet. I must try that. And the sets of colours are actually quite different I don’t think there would be direct comparisons to contrast and speed paints. But I can look into it for you.

I have most of the speedpaints, and have been really enjoying using them. Recently I used them to panel line my first gunpla model. It worked very well. Being able to use water instead of enamel thinner was a huge plus.

I started out with a few and now have the whole set and currently working through an Ulthwe Eldar Army VERY quickly.
The reactivation for me is a bonus. If you know when and how it happens you can use it for buttery smooth blends, super fine edge highlights with light dry-brushing and pre-shading. If you dont want any bleeding (say bone over grim black) just use a light varnish which can often be a good idea anyway.
One of the only issues I found early on were with decals and my decal solution, but you should always varnish before decals anyway.
These paints dry so level and smooth you can paint the type of large surfaces (Wraithlord) Contrast would struggle with. Plus with slower drying time you have enough time to move paint about.
I'm actually excited about attacking my box games of Zombieside, Cthulhu, Decent and Heroquest now. Or trying them through an airbrush.....

Sadly, a bottle in one of the packages was compromised and got all over the rest of the paints as well as emptied. But while I wait for that replacement, I’m using what I have! 🤪
Oh no. Sorry to hear about the spillage. Hope it didn’t stain your labels and all that. Hope you have fun over the weekend playing around with them.
So, tried them out on one figure this weekend (Nolzur’s Annis Hag. Hitting the Blood Rage minis later).
First, love them! Wish I could post a pic of how it turned out. Looking online at some of the painting jobs on the same mini - mine turned out way better with no efferent! They really do base coat/wash and highlight in one shot. Palid Bone has to be my favorite. The outcome of that color is PERFECT. I did do some Zenithal priming and that is a bit iffy for me. I would say leave very little black in only the most recessed areas, when doing zenithal. It does add to the effect in the end so I’ll probably do it from here forward.
The big thing for me though is the change in my painting mind set. It feels GOOD to know I don’t have to spend hours upon hours painting minis any more. Am I settling for a little less in quality? Maybe? This one turned out pretty damn good to me! And it took about 30 mins total!
Now, looking at my boxes of unpainted minis does seem so daunting. And it brought the FUN back to the hobby for me! I already have my next one primed and ready to go when I haven’t painted a mini in over a year!

I intend to do a few more. At least one on a more challenging surface. Like a space marine. Like I mention in the video the reactivation didn’t seam to be an issue that the internet thinks it is. I’d say grab yourself a pot or two and give them a try.
The Reactivation issue is not an instant thing i have seen a little bit on some models but you sort of get a warning if you understand and it was not a problem. And you can just hit the model with a quick coat of warnish to seal the base layer
You could even call it a feature, I havent tested this yet but i want to try making weathering by using the speedpaints like oil paints, covering them up, let them sit, and then reactivate the paint to drag it off :)

@@MediocreHobbies Yeah they are great for "wet blending" because of their transluency and the fact that they are slow drying gives you a good amount of time
Like some others, this video made me pull the trigger and get the AP speed paints. I've been using them quite a bit, and painting WAY more minis than I otherwise would have. Seriously, I'm painting much, much faster than I used to. They will reactivate (if I try hard enough), but I'm not really having any problems, at least not with the way I'm using the paints. I'm quite happy with them.

So I do have a question, as you are a guard enthusiast, in warhammer darktide there is a guard regiment that is often seen around certain areas while the players are beginning a mission or have a position reinforced as they leave, how would you go about painting them up? Their armor looked a blueish grey, with I think grey fatigues. Hard to tell in that game lol

I have noticed /some/ reactivation when putting a Strong Tone wash across my Speedpaints. Noticed this pretty early on in a batch paint of 40 models. CBA stopping and varnishing at the time so made a mental note of which ones were affected, made sure I used LIGHT brushstrokes and cleaned my brush every time I went over a different colour. Ended up being able to use the reactivation to blend the few affected models into shading so no need to to meet the table with my head. For reference, the yellow, reds & light greens were the main culprits.

The one with the pink/ purple scheme with the flail and shotgun, you could have used some dark-brown on the small-section just forward of the trigger, like a wooden-hand-grip! IMO, would have added some contrast. Other than that, just some black-dots on the gun barrels and Bamm!! Emeril Lagossi-style-DONE! You got new subscriber man! Love this channel!

I'd like to add that if your struggling to find a good highlight color you can just use the speed paint color you used as a tint for some white primer and create a perfect color match highlight paint that way. I've done this with Badger white primer and it's worked great for a fast layer highlight with no activation issue. The primer is Airbrush ready so it's thin out of the bottle. Absolutist llove the browns and reds and sand golem is a fantastic gold over a silver base.

I bought the full set. Been having fun. One thing I did was prime and pai t the lid of each bottle. Really handy to see the colour I want .
I had a 'little' issue with reactivation ... but I think its my fault as my white paint was a cheap Auto primer. And its a bit of a glossy primer.

Nice video as always and the figures look superb! A couple of Speedpaint comments. I have found that a white or off white primer works best (or Zenithal) with SP, particularly if you are not going to highlight. I generally use Wraithbone. I have seen the reactivation but if you let the figure dry or better yet run a hair dryer over it you won't have that problem. Apparently the top layer of the medium takes longer to completely dry. I paint historicals and use a wash over the Contrast or SP as you do. It helps to cover any primer showing through as well (I spent 30 years black priming all my minis). I was very concerned about reactivation but it has become a non issue for me. I do have an issue with yellow colors in both SP and Contrast - they all turn seem more orange than yellow. I love the leather color - perfect for saddles with Gore Grunta Fur Contrast as the horse coat color. So I will be using both SP and Contrast together.

Great video. I've got a lot of paint brands and I used AP war paints the most. I really like them and get good results. They need shaking for sure. But they are really forgiving to use. I think people don't like them because the coverage isn't 1 coat over black. They are cheap, go through the airbrush great and many colours cover great. Exception is the reds, but they are great for layering! Citadel Mephiston and khorne red are the base coat masters though

I've had the base box, as a bigger it's been fantastic to use, two things to note, the colours are bright, if you are looking for dull pallet they might not be great, second only use one coat. If you put a second layer on it'll make the colour a darker shade each time and lose the effect.

I've been playing with them a bit, and had good luck mixing grey or brown speed paint into the colors before painting if i wanted a duller color.
If you want to use the speed paints in layers, thin down the paint with speedpaint medium this will give you the option to do 2-3 layers
@@AlexSnedikerJacobsen keep that in mind cheers, I never want to do multi layers I just haven't got a steady hand yet so have to cover mistakes 😅
That might explain why the green didn’t really do the job for a Cthulhu mini I have. It just kind of coated but it may have been my fault doing too much

Top tip for using white backgrounds - set the camera exposure using a piece of 50% grey card, this will ensure the white is nice and bright. This is why wedding photographers will have an assistant wearing a grey tshirt so they meter off that to ensure the brides dress is bright white 👍

Some of the speedpaints seem to react with water specifically. I've experienced it a little bit myself, but not with all of them. It's also what I hear from some others, that if you mix the subsequent paints with water, the speedpaint can reactivate. So if you use the layers paints over the speedpaints straight out of the bottle they shouldn't reactivate. Another thing I've seen is use medium instead of water to thin the paints, which also shouldn't make the speedpaints reactivate. But as you say the washes sound like they act as a protective layer and that's probably an important step.
Good insight. Never thought about using medium to stop the reactivation. I shall have to try it out.
I did have a lot of reactivation bleeding... But I do tend to thin my paints with water.

This could be a really big problem for people who usually use a wet palette… thanks for the tip! Ive been keen to try the speedpaints out and I’ll remember that for the future
@@invntiv in the instructions Army Painter gives they say not to use a wet pallette, so you wouldnt want to anyway.
They ALL reactivate with water, some do do it more than others though. Wanna be able to use these as actual contrast replacements though? It's actually really easy, just mix some matt varnish into them. Completely stops the reactivation problem once you find the right ratio. If you use a wet palette I find 3 drops speedpaint to one drop matt varnish usually works out quite well, but it does vary by each color a little. The best part, the matt varnish doesn't change how the speed paint works at all.
Hmmm, I think I’ve actually stumbled across a non elitist honest review of these ‘cheaper’ paints. Personally I am finding them fantastic, I’ve been painting miniatures back in the dark ages from when you had to order them from the back of white dwarf 😉. Like you I have been careful using them and haven’t really had any reactivation problems.
My son has started painting models with me (New Hero quest) and even he is producing some great looking miniatures with the speed paints. I can’t fault them.

Great work on that painting. I've only had minor reaction issues when adding very wet additional layers, with the greens and purple seeming most susceptible. Adding a quick spray of matt varnish before doing any extra work is probably safest and not exactly a big chore.

I purchased the speed paint mega set. I love the pints, but unfortunately ran into some reactivation when varnishing. I used Verythane brand satin finish, and it started reactivating. Possibly I applied to heavy, possibly it was the formula of the varnish (although it was water based). Possibly I didn’t wait long enough after painting, but it was about 8 hours. It was frustrating, but I will figure it out, and I do still love the paints.

Little tip to stop the focus hunting for the spinning minis shot - focus up on the closest one and set it to Manual Focus (MF) mode. Then they'll naturally slip in and out of focus as they spin around.

I've been using these for my British peninsula have been a treat, I'm using white undercoat with a agrax shade then dry run and then I'm painting with the speedpaint works a treat for me great colours and highlights. just a aware it can rub off easy though

Great review, Its good to see some properly finished minis using speedpaints rather than just blobbed on 1 colour test minis. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but that pink/purple guy looks like he is straight out of a 1980's 2000ad comic, and the chainsword guy has the armour that sting wore in the original Dune movie. :D

i really enjoyed your video. I am curious before you started to shade your figures, did you use a primer before you started shading. It looked like it was grey primer or did you just start painting without some kind of primer? I loved how those colors brought your figures to life
Oh yes 100%. Without a primer they wouldn’t hold onto the model at all. I used I think army painter white for this video.
I keep getting reactivation issues mentioned whenever people talked about it. Yet when I used it on a wet palette, things were fine. Did a test with the GW entry level space marine and the red pops really well. Did a zenithal drybrush over black primer before using the colors, specifically leaving it darker and the red pops really well due to the deliberate contrast. There are points where I had slight pooling but it didn't really reactivate other painted surfaces they flowed over.
For sure. The more you use it the more you learn and make it work for you.

Im very new to WH AOS and found my painting to be horrid. But this video has really helped me alot. Specially not just using white scar primer the dark primer really makes a massive difference
It really does. And painting takes time to get the hang of pal. Don’t beat yourself up. Just give it time and practice and it will all work out.

They look fantatsic. Many thanks for clearing up some of the issues. I like to stick with a paint range for a specific miniature. Like WW2 I stick wholly with Vallejo model colour. I dont mix ranges. I think this may cause some of the issues. The dropper bottle with the stainless steel ball agitators is the big reason Ive moved over to Army Painter. The paint from citadel is great but Im not happy how quickly the paints cake up and dry up. Contrast no issues but I will be changing over to speed paints as they finish.. cheaper on the wallet as well.

I’ve had lots of fun with this set and 100 Skinks ! These paints are a horde painters dream ! If done properly as you say a good table top standard army. You will not win painting competitions this way , but want a nicely painted army your happy to put on the table this set does the job. I am 100% happy getting this set , it’s also worth remembering if you step up these paints can be mixed in with competitive painting 🖼

I have seen expert painters use an airbrush, zenathil highlight and contrast to get super good results. Check out squidmar's "my favriote paint" video.

I've had some bleeding and think it's a timing issue. The speed paints seem to be dry but I suspect they aren't

I think you might be onto something with the Wash paint part, havent seen a lot of people doing that and getting reactivation issues.
Def gonna try this method, because i do love the look of the colors way better then what the citadel contrasts give (they are more glossy/satin) then the speedpaints imo and i like the more matte look.

Did you thin Soft Tone shade? I’ve found AP shades to be a lot thicker than Citadel’s, so I can’t really use them in other than terrain pieces.
No I just made sure to pull away and that pooled. I found them to be quite good.
My recommendation for all wash/contrast painting is to prime with the whitest white primer you can find. Army painter matt white primer is the best value and color IMO. Tamiya matt white primer is also good, but can sometimes be hydrophobic with the washes and they won't spread as well. Also, it is SUPER toxic and fumey and very expensive. The current white primer from GW is crap. It is not white, it is grey.
For the best look, you should have a good, solid base of white. Any grey splotchy bits will throw off the look. This method will give you very vibrant, eye popping models.

I remember watching a video a few years ago where the guy was using a pastel pink colour undercoat. Something to do with where pink sits on the colour spectrum but it really brings out yellows and whites and other light colours you would normally have to apply multiple coats to and of course dark colours override it easily.
@@redstarling5171 ye I’ve seen that before. People undercoating yellow marines in red. Turned out amazing.
I started playing with the full set and I agree that the base coat should be white or a light grey. The speed paints do not work well on a black primer. I also tried a black basecoat with zenithal highlights and that worked ok, probably because the highlights I had lots of very dark areas where the speed paints just got lost. The times I noticed some reactivation was with very watered-down paints. I'll have to try your method of using a shade to act as a varnish coat. Overall I'm very happy with the speed paints, for getting a large number of models ready they will work great.
Hi ! awesome tutorial, just got my first speedpaints and i can't wait to start. I've got an issue with the primer though, i made a few test but i find that too dark when i test on it. What do you use for primer ? (i haven't test pure white yet, just using zenithal for now) -i search and try a few videos on your channel for "starting with contrast and the primer for it" but can't seem to find it ! thanks :)
Here's how I prime! th-cam.com/users/shorts51Hx1uTmtSw Speed paints/contrast aren't meant for going over dark colours, there not enough pigment in them so you need a grey or a white. Just make sure to stay consistent with the primer when you start an army or the colours will vary a lot! Hope that helped?

I did find a issue when dry brushing where I see a powder come off the model. I would think sealing after speed painting would be a good idea.
I also found better to use a smaller brush and apply just enough. Then to much, also happy that it doesn't dry superfast like GW
