Variaudio is the process of applying real-time adjustments to audio - primarily its pitch but also its position in the song. In this video tutorial I will show you how to use this very powerful tool in Cubase to tidy-up those moments when a live recording needs adjustment.

About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my music - both songs and instrumental pieces. Much of the music I write features in...
2. Tutorial videos about music composition and production
3. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase (currently Cubase 12).
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

The removal of the consonant “remnants” is great advice prior to deriving MIDI. Variaudio is a great utility for protecting listeners from my actual vocal performances! Another very useful video.
lol, I know what you mean. Cars crash when I sing.
Blimey, this is a very forensic, in-depth, tutorial on using VA and it's very easy on the ears and eyes. Top work! I must also add, I do love your very informative tutorials. 👍
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for the feedback :)
Once again an outstanding piece of work, beautifully and comprehensively presented. Thank you
That's kind of you to say, thank you very much!
Thank you! This has been a game changer.
Great tutorial. I hadn't used Variaudio in months and needed a quick reminder and this was perfect. Just the right amount of time spent on each thing and good examples. Bravo!
You're very welcome - thanks for the kind feedback!
Amazing explanation! Thank you so much!

Yes Sir! Amazing tutorial. Thank you
Glad you liked it, thanks for the feedback!
Very clear explanations. Thx

Good Job TY
Very nice Tutorial and also Nice Voice.
Thank you

Much appreciated - I'll pass on the compliment to my wife too :)
Vari Audio sound is on par with Melodyne. But: VA has way better integration and faster workflow. Can't live without VA and Cubase auto alignment. ❤ great video as ever, thank you!
True, but Melodyne has so many additional, useful and incredible functionalities, you can even use it for sound design. And it is polyphonic.
I never bothered with Melodyne precisely because of the lack of integration, but I appreciate that being polyphonic is definitely an advantage. Not one that I've ever really felt the pain of, but you don't miss what you've never had I guess :)
@@OneManAndHisSongs 🙂
@@ErixSamsonmelodyne polyphonic algorithm doesn't work great with all signals. For correcting "wrong" chords it sound way better when you play the take again. I do daily sounddesign stuff without melodyne. Melodyne is not the holy grail.
Hey, thanks for the video. I just came across your channel a few months ago. I have C13 on Mac and I'm picking up a few great pointers on Variaudio. Cheers from Australia.
Glad I could help, thanks very much for the feedback!
Thank-you, very helpful and thoughtful approach, Anthony!
I appreciate you saying that, thanks for the feedback :)
Great tutorial on Vari-Audio Anthony. You had to really search for corrections in Pauline's performance as she did such a nice job to start with. Let me know if you want me to send you a voice recording as I bet I could make you sweat a little - wink. Also appreciated the ctrl-shift-scroll command for vertical zoom and of course the expression, "Does not matter a jot" which made my day.
lol, glad you liked the little Billy Connelly-ism :)
This is a great video. Thank you! But how you were able to activate vertical zoom in Cubase 12? When I do that as you recommended (shift+ctrl+scroll) nothing happens :/
It was something that was only introduced fairly recently. I can't remember exactly when, but it might be worthwhile just checking that you're fully up to date. As far as the feature itself is concerned, as long as your editor has keyboard focus, it's as simple as you see me demonstrate in the video (it doesn't require any config setting enabling etc.)
Good stuff My Man!
Appreciate it, thanks for the feedback!
I can't get any sound from clicking the clips in cubase 13! Help!
Look for a button called "Acoustic Feedback" in your Variaudio editor. If you can't see it, right click in an empty space in the toolbar and click the check box to display it
Thanks so much i will try this today @OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs Mate, I have been trying to sort this out for about a week, on forums, groups in Facebook etc. I've never been able to get the segments to play back audio since I upgraded to Cubase 13. You've solved my issue in a one click! Thank you so much. Subscribed. Biglove from Scotland. 😊
Glad to help :)
Hallo! tHANK YOU so much for your excellent video! I have been dealing with some issues after correcting some vocals with variaudio and i was trying to find tutorials in youtube to see if this happens to anyone else and here i found you!! at 12:17 at the phrase "no one to hold me" the word me at the end, after editing, it got an unnatural sound, like a click, but it is not that obvious. The same thing at the phrase "no one to need" at 18:00 at the letter "d", again this king of "pop" or "click" occurs. For sure these sounds are not obvious unless you hear the track in solo but it is still disturbing to know that in order to tune some vocals you will have to accept these kind of noises. Is there a way to fix this? I wish there was a magic button, after finishing tuning, where it could fix these noises.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree - any amount of pitch/time correction has the potential to introduce artifacts. The algorithms are good, but not perfect. If I decide an artifact is too noticeable to ignore, I usually use a combination of crossfading, dynamic eq, and volume dipping to hide the problem, but everything is a compromise in one form or another
@OneManAndHisSongs I understand... Thanks for answer!!
how can I add vibration to a voice? or make the vibrations stronger?
I don't know of a way to do that with Variaudio - it's not a real-time effects processor. For simple vibrato I'd use the Steinberg Vibrato FX plugin, but accentuating an already-existing vibrato would be tricky. I've never tried this myself, but I imagine I'd look into finding a pitch-shifter that was specifically designed to do that job.
Hi thank you very much for the video. I have 1 question: I was used to listen to the sound while adjusting the pitch (while tinning). Now it seams to be disappeared in Pro 13... or it is just switched off???? And where is the switch??? Thank's in advance. Jan
There's a button called "Acoustic Feedback". I can't remember if it defaults to off, but that's what you want. It looks like a loudspeaker with little lines to each side
@@OneManAndHisSongs Thank's I already solve it. You have to route your monitors outside outputs via CR only and then use this "speaker shape" button. Then it works. Jan
@@verdi260 . "You have to route your monitors outside outputs via CR only and then use this "speaker shape" button. Then it works".
Thanks but what the heck does that mean ? I'm struggling
😝😍😝😝
Tearing my hair out here..."If we drop functions open, there's a feature called 'extract midi'"...WHERE IS FUNCTIONS? You did that so fast it was impossible to see what you did. Please assume your viewers have no pre-requisite knowledge. i.e. I don't know as much as you do about using Cubase!
Sorry about that - Functions is a sub-menu in the MIDI menu at the top of the app. I sometimes have to make a few assumptions about prior knowledge, otherwise the videos would be too long, but when opening Menu items I do try to go more slowly that I did in this case.
@@OneManAndHisSongs Thanks for the considered reply. I have a Master's in Education and taught at universities for over 20 years (not DAWs). In that setting, my students were either complete beginners or had to have a certain level of PK, as they had taken other more basic modules. But, here, you could get all levels. I understand that, but I've given up on some 'teachers' as they always assume prior knowledge. This includes some of the 'official Cubase' presenters. P.s. from your accent, I recon I'm (originally from your neck of the woods - Merseyside).
No probs :) Indeed, I come from Rainford.
@@OneManAndHisSongs I know it well.
