Wow, I don't know what I like the most. The fact that Cubase makes comping this easy or Dom's excellent guide for getting the perfect take. Great job man!
Thought I had it sorted (when you play as badly as me, you learn comping fast!), but any watcher of Dom's videos knows that the chances are that Dom knows better. I've been alt-clicking the cuts, and didn't know about the "super easy" dragging. What I really like is that there are always 23 different ways of doing things in Cubase, but Dom's got the experience to know the besT. Those little bonus tips too, knew about versions, forgot about duplicating, never really bothered with delete overlaps, went straight to bouncing. Thanks!
I know this is an old video but I want to say , first you are an amazing bass player Dom , second thank you because I never realized about this tool in cubase , I always got my last take as the best one..but it's never like that...something might be better and something not and it's never the same
I've been using Cubase for many many years and absolutely swear by the comp tool. I recently found your channel after upgrading to Cubase 12 and wanting to see what's new. Subscribed and Liked of course! I love that you did the tutorial with bass, since I'm a bass player too! Comp tool makes my bass parts sound brilliant. 😂. I use comp tool for rhythm guitar, solos, vocals, etc. I combine a technique I learned doing bass session work with an amazing producer, which means I almost *never* punch. Here are some more tips I've learned: * Just play through the entire part several times and never stop even if a mistake is made. For a guitar solo, I'll have the guitarist just run through the solo section 4 or 5 times. Once I have a "safe" take or a take with good energy, everything else is bonus. I can use the good take for most of the part and then comp in the tasty licks. Same with vocals and the comp tool is amazing at being able to just drop in an amazing vocal run to spice the track up. For bass, I get a little more obsessive of course - I might record 8 to 10 full takes of the song and then comp together the track. * The only time I'll punch is if one of the lanes just doesn't have what I need. It happens occasionally. It's super rare though, and sometimes depending on the part, I can just lift a bit from some other section, or use VariAudio or Free Warp to fix a little thing here and there. Between all these tools, I'm very efficient at getting really good parts, both from myself and my session players, with very little angst! * I generally always keep the grid on, snapping either to bar or beat. Then I use comp tool to get the coarse grained part I like. After that I go in and tweak things here and there with the grid off, or with a 1/16 quantize, dragging the comp separator bar - another magical thing I love about Cubase. So when you're doing your first pass of comping, just keep the snap on to quickly make your editorial choices. I didn't know about Cmd temporarily disabling the snap. TIL - thanks for that! * Always set up your markers first - it helps you keep track of where in the song you are. Also, I generally build a comp linearly like 4 bars or a section at a time. * I always colorize my editorial choices. I start with the default track background, then as I pick the parts I like, I color them yellow. I might have a couple of comp choices I like at any place in the track and I just color all the good ones yellow. Once I've made my first pass of choices, I listen to the track again from the top and I might choose a different lane here or there, or move a comp point etc. Iterate until you have what you like but don't obsess over it too much. Go with your gut when you have more than one comp choice you love - it'll all work out once you listen to the track in context. After I like my choices, I color them all light green. The reason I do all this is because if I accidentally click on a comp point to change the choice, I'll know which ones to go back to. What I didn't know until today was about the track versions - TIL! Thank you for that, I think it will transform the way I build songs. * Once I've made all my choices, I solo the track and listen to where the comp chooses a different lane. The comp tool is amazing but occasionally you'll end up with a pop of you're crossing lanes. I've been able to comp in between notes or riffs and it's almost always clean out of the box. If you get a pop or other artifact, then you drop in a crossover to get it nice and clean. I also sometimes go through and cut out the parts where the instrument isn't playing, and then fade in and out to get a nice clean noiseless part. I generally don't delete overlaps, but now that I know about track versions I might give that a try. Start with the take that has the best energy and groove, and use the comp tool for "flavor".
Those are amazing tips! I'm just about to start comping in a more serious & structured way, and your tips and Dom's tips will be of great use! Thanks and happy comping!
M. the Professor Dom Sigalas, Very difficult, as usual, you're very very strong, and You 're a musician ! So, I have to work a lot to studie the piano with "I school". At 65 years old, not so easy, but, never mind ! Thank's a lot to you to help us !!!
omg... I was dragging and cutting all this versions, this was always for me a headache, not any more ))) thank youi so much for making my life easier !
Dom, you forgot to mention/show that the Comping tool behaves very smartly when it comes to getting back to the previously selected bit: you hit the last chosen bit AGAIN, and the previous bit is activated. Very handy indeed.
Wow! I am a big fan of your channel. A real gem for Cubase users and producers in general. And you are such an amazingly versatile musician. Makes me wonder at times if I am a musician after all. Kidding of course. We are all musicians in our heart❤.
I’ve been using Cubase for 30 years now (I started on Atari ST 😊😬) and I know there are a lot of things I don’t know in the software (I know quite a bit though), but Dom, you keep on teaching me tricks!!! I wasn’t doing my perfect takes like that at all (cutting and pasting, yeah, I know, I’m a donkey 😄), so THANK YOU!!! 🙏🏻😍
Dom! I spent hours cutting, editing the lanes to reach this result. Didn't know about comping. Once again, thank you so much. Great knowledge step tonight. Cheers
I was stuck to logic pro x only for this feature, but since i am shifting back to windows i am looking for alternative DAWs, used cubase long time back but not aware of this feature, bro u r life saver
I am definitely getting Cubase as my DAW, since I have found such a brilliant teacher of it in you! (I also like the way they use colours 😅). I am sure other DAWs are good too, but half the problem is learning all the features! When I get it, I will probably end up watching the totality of all your Cubase videos! 😂 I hope TH-cam is generous with you and add revenues, as you have a really brilliant channel! I have learnt video editing and carpentry (!!) from TH-cam, and digital music production is next. Now I have to search your channel for tips on computers that can handle the DAW, VSTs etc, which keyboard to choose and which microphone for singing! I don't know if you cover those topics, but hopefully I can find something in there!
Dom, This video on Comping is great. I started using Cubase with 9.5 and never took the time to learn how to use this tool. I am working on a new project and will put this into practice. Until now I have been doing comping manually, making separate tracks and cutting and pasting bits into one new track. Which is a lot of work. Thanks for the time saving teaching.
I've used the multiple takes in a loop for a while, as it helps to get into the zone, but have always ended up slicing it up; but then I discover this - Cubase just keeps on giving! I have my daughter coming to do some vocals on my latest track - and she's defimitely into that 'syllable level detail' so yeah, this is a life saver. I've now subscribed, thank you Dom!
After 10 years of music production I wish I knew about this way earlier! I often run many takes of synth patches all run through many effects chains and manually scrub through it all to then arrange the best parts. I learned more about comping since I started a music engineering course this year and they use logic, which I really personally don't like, so knowing how to do this in Cubase will help me out so much at Uni and my own productions! You always teach me new things about Cubase :D Thank you
Dom, you are a champ. I'm about to record a bunch of backing tracks for my daughter and don't have the time (or ability) to be good enough to nail them in a single take, so will have to comp my butt off to get the job done. Your style and energy make it such a pleasure to learn Cubase and for that I'm very grateful. Tons of work goes into making these vids and I hope you can feel the love all the way from Sydney, Aust! Cheers mate - Dave
Hint: If you record in Loop Mode, Cubase automatically assigns Track Versios to Lanes. However, if you record different takes manually (like I do) You need to use the feature'Create Lanes from Track versions': Project Menu > Track Versions > Create Lanes from Versions. It took me a while to figure out why I had no Lanes to Comp even though I had recorded seven different takes...
Thanks for the information, every video I’ve seen is always the same they make you record fast like a maniac nonstop, I want to record at my own speed, thanks
I use comping in CB all the time but I learned other tricks here, like cleaning up the take, creating a version copy. Always something to learn in your videos. Thanks!
Again 🙏 It’s Often like this. Even though I know about this, it’s not all I know about THIS! That’s why I always check it out. Dom you’re great. Not too much unnecessary talk. Just right on to it. Dom, I love the comping capabilities in Cubase (especially for vocals). But you’ve just shown me there is so much more I can be doing to use it well! Mind blown!
Another sick slick demo in the bag Dom. You are my main source for Cubase info. You explain things soo much better and faster than the manual. Great stuff.
Love your videos, even though I've been using cubase for years, feels like I still don't know many tricks that it can do. Thanks to you I'm learning now! thank you Dom!
The comp tool is the deadline slayer !!! :D versions ... haven't hardly looked at them. BOOOH! :P I need to check them out in order to do better than that! Great video ... again!

1. Select hand tool
2. Drag your selection
3. Hand pick vocal takes.
4. Comp ( Duplicate version, Delete Overlaps: Alt+D / Audio > Bounce Selection).
Bonus: The Pencil Tool
Thanks Dom
Comping in cubase is so intuitive.
Perfect video, thanks Dom. When you know everything about your DAW, it feels like you are playing a game.
Can't believe how much I learnt in 15 mins, thanks Dom!
8 years of mixing in cubase, and i got this tip today hahaa, tjhanks
Wow, I don't know what I like the most. The fact that Cubase makes comping this easy or Dom's excellent guide for getting the perfect take. Great job man!
one more step against ignorance is one more step towards joy. thanks so much
Just the best Cubase channel out there - everything is so useable in real productions
This is crazy, I have been learning lots with you man, can’t believe all the time I spent doing the wrong way of editing. This guy is legit!
100%
reading manuals helps a lot
Asf 🎉
The Versions! I had no idea! That is slick! And the duplicate is the cherry on top!
Thought I had it sorted (when you play as badly as me, you learn comping fast!), but any watcher of Dom's videos knows that the chances are that Dom knows better. Same -I tended to cut the version up which is messy. This will save lots of time with a cleaner result.
it's nice/helpful to see it in action whether than someone just talking about it as a feature

I must say... your videos are a life saver :):)
I do the "comping thing" the old fashioned way, you know with selection, scissors and mute tools (the "1-3-7" method). That's until now! Thanks Dom!
M. the Professor Dom Sigalas,
Very difficult, as usual, you're very very strong, and You 're a musician !
So, I have to work a lot to studie the piano with "I school".
At 65 years old, not so easy, but, never mind !
Thank's a lot to you to help us !!!
Dom... Not only are you an excellent instructor , you are a fine musician as well... Dom you are the best... Thank You!!!
This is pure gold. I spend sooo many time with the scissors.
This is the feature that convinced me to buy Cubase. Thank you for the great explanation.
Your excitement is infectious.
Well done, as usual. Dom dominates
This video was 100% solution for my recording problems, thank you again.
Excellent! I do use comping but I wasn't using it correctly and this will give me better results and take less time. Thank you again!
The best tutorials of Cubase! Thanks from Argentina!
omg... I was dragging and cutting all this versions, this was always for me a headache, not any more )))
thank youi so much for making my life easier !
I am using these features all the time for creating perfect take of vocals!! Thank you !
Thanks for this, Dom! Cubase's comping is second to none, I can't imagine living without it.
I agree, but as an Ableton user, I'm excited Ableton is finally catching up with v11
Dom, you forgot to mention/show that the Comping tool behaves very smartly when it comes to getting back to the previously selected bit: you hit the last chosen bit AGAIN, and the previous bit is activated. Very handy indeed.
I’m new to Cubase 12, and your channel is the best thing out there. Thanks so much!
Another gem, thank you Dom. Cubase, so powerful. First you have to know what it can do, then learn how to do it. It’s awesome.
Brilliant video and great explanation on the way the Comp tool works in conjunction with ‘bass face’ 😂
Wow! I am a big fan of your channel. A real gem for Cubase users and producers in general. And you are such an amazingly versatile musician. Makes me wonder at times if I am a musician after all. Kidding of course. We are all musicians in our heart❤.
Awesome. Cubase is so deep it hurts. This is saving me tons of time, thanks as always.
Just hold Ctrl do disable snap temporarily ;)
Loved the video btw, this is going to make sifting through takes soooo much easier!
Was gonna ask this! Ha. Thanks.
I’ve been using Cubase for 30 years now (I started on Atari ST 😊😬) and I know there are a lot of things I don’t know in the software (I know quite a bit though), but Dom, you keep on teaching me tricks!!! Only want to say your videos are SUPER and I love your enthusiasm! Can't get enough.
This will be perfect for recording guitar solos, thank you so much!!!
The delete overlaps shortcut is a great tip!
Dom! I spent hours cutting, editing the lanes to reach this result. Didn't know about comping. Once again, thank you so much. Great knowledge step tonight. Cheers

Briliant! I always discover new gems in your videos. When someone purchases Cubase it should come with an automatic subscription to your channel!
This is one of the features i always wanted to have....Dom, you just showed me it was already right in front of me all the time. Thanks!
Men... never dissaponted! just great!
Dom, you are my teacher number one. Thank you a lot!!!
Once again Dom, gotta hand (!) it to you, a brilliant, useful, video. Thank you.
Again 🙏 It’s Often like this.

This video just was pure insanity. I am sperchless. Thank you dom.
I d‘ont mind the take trick but these drums are killer. You should teach us how to programm such cool midi drums, wow
Awesome video. I was looking for this option a lot. Thanks for showing it Dom!
Dom, I love the comping capabilities in Cubase (especially for vocals). But you’ve just shown me there is so much more I can be doing to use it well! Mind blown!
Thank you, Mr Sigalas. Your work put to all Cubase videos is very useful and appreciated.
..love your spirits buddy!! You bring a smile to my face! Cheers from MTL! 8~D
Well that was fun and educational! I never knew how to use the hand tool, thank you Dom.......
Another sick slick demo in the bag Dom. You are my main source for Cubase info. You explain things soo much better and faster than the manual. Great stuff.

You're very amazing. Thank you. I learn to much with your class.
Thanks!
Thank you so much my friend, highly appreciated ❤️
Amazing as always Dom!
Pure wisdom from Dom!
Thanks so much! Great Video!
Thank you Dom - always learning new things from you
Exactly what I needed. Great. And a lot of inspiration.
The comp tool is the deadline slayer !!! :D
versions ... haven't hardly looked at them. BOOOH! :P I need to check them out in order to do better than that!
Great video ... again!
Thanks for sharing this great feature of Cubase, I didn't know about but was looking for ways to do the same somehow.... 👍
Brilliant! Thanks again Dom!
I have been looking for that delete overlaps function for ages, I’ve been using the down arrow on each segment. Thanks Dom! Cheers Dave great bass riff by the way
great tutorial, the comping feature in cubase is really ace, i love it!
Thanks
Cool Tips, I have never used this function before. Thanks, DOM.
Immediate subscribe. I like for my final take of a song on any instrument to be a single segment if possible esp drums but this is a great set of techniques for arrangement of ideas for any instrument for me. Very well explained, thank you.
Grazie.
Thank you so much my friend, highly appreciated ❤️💕 💝
From now on I will use it everytime! Thank you so much Dom 👌
I love it Dom, you rule as always... Very helpful! :)
Love this video. I had started to use a looper (Loopy Pro) to try out different song ideas, but going down a route with this kind of work flow will probably save me time and distractions and allow me to focus more on the creative flow rather than a lot of trial and error on the looping takes then having to spend the time to try to get the perfect take recorded before I can move on to the next part.
Dom, you’re a God!
Perfect job. Really interesting. Thank you very much
I would have taken 9:02 and then spicing up the drums rythm, but super cool didn't know that comp thing on cubase
Great tips Dom, i use it all the time and use versions also to keep the comped lanes.
on the negative side, i Hate comping when singers take advantage of this and do 30 takes and pick every word from other lane, what a nightmare LOL..
So helpful! Thanks Dom!
never even heard of "comping" before a couple days ago. always edited things together manually and by ear. this should be an interesting technique to find out about.
Thanks, Dom!
The perfect guide video. Thanks!
Coolio, thx Dom. I've been doing this a lot in Ableton lately, but good to know how this is to be done in Cubase too. Though I like working in Ableton, Cubase is still the better option when it comes to mixing I think.
Simply excellent. Thanks Dom!
Thank you! These lessons are a huge help.
Great skillful knowledge here
how do i give this 1 million likes. Thanks for another gem Dom!!
This will change my workflow forever Dom, thank you so much
Thanks once again my Cubase master!
Thanks for all the effort and passion you put into your tutorials. Keep it up, thanks again.
