His conversations with Diana always make me think he’s not truly on Superman’s side. After all, in other universes he’s a great tactician (still impulsive, but smart and great at thinking ahead when the time calls for it) so it’s likely he took Bruce’s disownment of him as an opportunity to get close to Superman and continue to behave as loyal as possible to Kal. He has no one else as everyone hates him because he says such insufferable shit, but that’s completely within his control. Diana is the only one that truly asks whether he’s keeping secrets “like his father”. And since Diana knew Bruce well, this claim doesn’t come from a nowhere, shallow place-she KNOWS that Bruce has contingencies and can be a dedicated agent of espionage if he sets his mind to it, and Damian’s training opens that avenue of such a trait even more, so if anyone would play the long game enough to dismantle the regime from the inside when Kal finally falls, it’d be him. In the Batman beyond comics he goes back to Ra’s/the LoA because he knows his grandfather’s empire can’t be toppled from an offensive position anymore, especially because Tim isn’t there to fight Ra’s’ work anymore and hasn’t for a long time in BB. And how better to kill an impenetrable beast than from the inside? Older Bruce doesn’t get why he’s doing it but that’s a lot to do with Bruce not fully getting how Damian’s legacy has effected his independence-he’s intrinsically tied to his father’s legacy AND his mother’s, and only one of those needs redeeming, which only he can provide. It’s tragic to think he’d dedicate his life to being a secret agent and not being able to confide in anyone for fear of it coming back to Superman or resulting in it being foiled and never being able to get that close to the regime’s inner workings again. But if anyone would try and find hesitation and be right, it’s Diana, and that’s a suspicious tone Damian’s taking with her, almost like he’s trying to keep up the egotistic facade while being wary as she may have hit the nail on the head and he has to make sure. 42:45

And since Diana knew Bruce well, this claim doesn’t come from a nowhere, shallow place-she KNOWS that Bruce has contingencies and can be a dedicated agent of espionage if he sets his mind to it, and Damian’s training opens that avenue of such a trait even more, so if anyone would play the long game enough to dismantle the regime from the inside when Kal finally falls, it’d be him.
In the Batman beyond comics he goes back to Ra’s/the LoA because he knows his grandfather’s empire can’t be toppled from an offensive position anymore, especially because Tim isn’t there to fight Ra’s’ work anymore and hasn’t for a long time in BB. And how better to kill an impenetrable beast than from the inside? Older Bruce doesn’t get why he’s doing it but that’s a lot to do with Bruce not fully getting how Damian’s legacy has effected his independence-he’s intrinsically tied to his father’s legacy AND his mother’s, and only one of those needs redeeming, which only he can provide.
It’s tragic to think he’d dedicate his life to being a secret agent and not being able to confide in anyone for fear of it coming back to Superman or resulting in it being foiled and never being able to get that close to the regime’s inner workings again. But if anyone would try and find hesitation and be right, it’s Diana, and that’s a suspicious tone Damian’s taking with her, almost like he’s trying to keep up the egotistic facade while being wary as she may have hit the nail on the head and he has to make sure. 42:45
