great video scotty kilmer, thanks very much for the information i really appreciate it man....Please tel me, if i am using the OBD port plugged into the car whilst the scan tool is pulled in the cigarette power port, will it cause damage to the scan tool?
Scotty as a mechanic I just went through this on a Nissan. I was at my wits end, no communication with scanner, when I decided to check the DLC pins. I retensioned them, and got the scan tool to work. I got the dreaded U1000 code which is a story into itself, but it saved me money on another ecu which wasn't the issue.
Some people saying this video is a sell out. I don't see where. No name was mentioned, No link to product in description, The umbrella doesn't even have a name on it. Everybody has to make a buck. Leave the guy alone. He is a great guy. How many repair videos has he made for TH-cam? How many people have sent him money for helping them out? I rest my case.
I like his videos because they are to the point. He doesn't make you sit there and watch as he unbolts a nut. We all get how to take a nut or bolt off so why waste time. He is a sweet guy in person. -John
I don't see a sell out either. Are our favorite sports teams sell outs because they wear nike and addis? It's good that people want to sponsor Scotty. Nothing wrong with that.
yeah but showing you how to unbolt a bolt is very useful. Go watch ETC's video where he changes a radiator on a Chrysler. He spent 30 minutes just getting one bolt out lol. Chrysler engineers hid it behind some plastic and metal pieces so you can't get to it unless you remove all the junk first and then you realize it's rusted and you have to cut it off. And so what is usually a 10 second unbolting turns into a two hour chore.
I was chasing my tail for a month trying to figure out a 2002 Buick rendezvous. Countless hours and dead ends. This video and a half hour, fixed the problem. Thank you!!!!
Coolant temp sensor on mine. Still haven't replaced it. Just unplugging and replugging solved the communication issue. Still throwing a code for it, but now my scan tool is working again.
Beetlejuice HeRe. I've been a SeLF schooled Vehicle mechanic for 38 years. I know I don't know everything but I'm abs SRS and AIR-TEAM Certified. But i have a customers truck and iT won't start. I've programmed the key and fob that works but won't crank and no communication with 2 different scanner's snap-on veris and an enova. YOu just gave me a turn. Cause I was at a Dead End.. thank you. God's Speed..
Thank you Scotty for your channel. I'm just an old shade tree mechanic. The modern engines are out of my league. I'm glad you are up to pare on the latest. I really value your information. Keep up the great work you do on TH-cam. It helps MORE than you know.
so glad I came across this video, I haven't been able to pass my smog, I went to 3 different locations, finally last week guy told me, it's my OBD PORT, I didn't think about one could be bend. I paid for my registration, so the price wouldn't increase, but no sticker, today when I get home I'm going to check the port. I was about to go to the dealership, they want $195 to do a diagnostic check, if they fix the issue, then they told me they would credit that towards the bill. I have a 2012 Toyota Camry SE, I LOVE MY CAR I have 103K miles on it the warranty just expired at 100K, will post an update sometime this weekend. thanks again for sharing your GREAT KNOWLEDGE ON CARS.
I love this guy! Not only is he super funny to watch he really knows what he's talking about. Every time I have a question that I am stumped on I look it up on his channel and he's never let me down thanks Scotty keep rocking brother
Thank you scotty. I gave open heart surgery to my 7.3 and when I closed her back up I must've caused a sensor to short. No start no communication with ecm. I tried this and found the problem! Saved me so much headache
This helped me a TON when trying to get my 2009 Pontiac G6 to connect to my OBD2 sensor. Had the connectivity problem and turned out to be s sensor on the engine... I couldn't figure it out forever!!! After checking fuses, reading other articles online, etc.. I just kept driving it over the last year with a check engine light on because nothing seemed out of wack. I was gonna just run it to the ground because I was so stumped! Thanks Scotty!
You are THE MAN! had the same problem, and it was the same issue, I didnt reconnect the fuel pressure sensor completely. Plugged it back in, good as gold. Thank YOU Scotty.
Love the channel Scotty. I've tried all these methods. Nothing will work with the machines. All the lights come on. I'm speechless. I have a 2004 Northstar Cadillac Deville.

Nice to see you have some wonderful British weather Scotty. Good tip with the faulty solenoid.
Although unlikely, had two sensors that been shorted out or faulty you would have changed the ECU going by your logic and what you said. You would unplug one bad sensor but because the device still wouldn't communicate you assumed it was not that sensor and plugged it back in. After going through all the sensors you would still have no comms and assume it was the ECU computer. Best to unplug the sensors one at a time and check comms WITHOUT plugging them back in. That is the only way you can be 100% sure it is not one of them causing the comms problem.
Thank You!!!! 😊 so very much Mr. Scotty Kilmer! This video helped me immensely!!! This helped my car start 🚗right away!!! 2 Blown fuses!!! But the right ones right away! Bamm!!! Car good as new!!! Thank You!!!! 😊 God Bless You 😇 🙏 😃🙂🙃🙂
You are the best. I have a question my car is having a similar problem. car runs fine but my dash lights won't work and my doors won't lock won't lock automatically when I start driving like before and I also don't have power to the obd2. I would appreciate if you help me. Thanks in advance
Scotty I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 4.8l I have power to my scan tool but cannot get a reading other than error my ? Is can I undo the sensors 1 at a time like in you’re video it won’t make anything worse unplug then plug in repeat as necessary?
Some businesses in ebay sells rebuild car computers for like $120 - $240. What's even better is some of them reprogram it for you, just send them your VIN and whatever it's necessary. You may have to send back your old one for core exchange.. In my past, a mini van had a faulty TCM and it had P0500 and P0605 codes. I order a ebay rebuild TCM, swap it, and it still works today. The P0500 and P0605 codes disappeared when I replaced the TCM.
It's not a good idea to purchase a rebuilt computer. They only redo the cold solder joints. Keeping P=I.I.R in perspective, what do you suppose happened to the ICs while a cold solder joint in the computer gave out gradually? ICs have a very small headroom for fluctuations caused by a bad solder joint elsewhere in the circuit.
Welcome to Australia, OBD2 became standard in 2006 and anything before then generally never works regardless if you have an OBD2 port or not, however this makes you learn manufacturer specific diagnostics - Toyotas E1 and TE1 jumper, Subaru diagnostic connectors/FreeSSM/Romraider etc etc
One of my friends has a fairly new (two year old) Kia Cerato. He took it to the dealer for a software update, it failed at 99%. Wouldn't communicate, wouldn't start, nothing. The car was dead, all of it. ECU, dash, lighting, everything. They unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it didn't help. Kia ordered a new ECU (warranty) but it took two weeks to arrive. While they were waiting my friend did more research into it. Turns out that you need to leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours. He told the dealer that, and they tried that. Hey presto, they were able to enter a recovery mode, reflash/update the ECU and all good. They didn't need to replace the ECU after all.
What about on, say a 2007 Rav4, OBDII connector is powering any of my diag tools, but NONE will communicate. Car is a runner. We were attempting to program spare keys.
Hello there my Porsche Boxter didn’t pass smog here in California cause the obd 2 showed it wasn’t ready ? I’ve not taken the batterie out of he car but had the top replaced a while back and I think they might have taken batterie or disconnected it ...there’s no engine light on
Will disconnecting the sensors to test work on any vehicle? I have a 2009 Jeep JK and none of my sensors will work. I have power seeing that when I use my bluetooth OBD2 it starts to read then stop..
I replaced the body control module on a 2005 ford mustang 4.0 v6 engine. Haven't programmed it but the car runs fine no issues. Just it has abs traction control and the brake light on. I checked all the fuses they are not blown. I have an the computer scanner and I'm not able to get communication with the abs system or the power control module. Have you had the same issue with this car?
Mr. Kilmer. I am having trouble figuring out my truck. 2003 Dodge Dakota SLT 3.9. It was running for about an hour and just shut off by itself and it won't start back up. It has plenty of gas and I'm getting a spark. I bought a new MS300 scanner but it won't read anything on my truck. Your input would be appreciated.
Hey scotty ? I'm going through the same thing like how you posted on your video I cannot read any codes because of my check engine light being on constantly also my transmission shift awkward from first to second gear some guy came over with his big computer an autel and it does the same to his except when he goes into the tcm programming he does the learn procedure and the check engine light goes off them of i put my regular scanner to see if it works thru the obd 2 it works but then when i start driving the car it will shift normal then the check engine light will come back on and I won't be able to read the codes at all again can it be a transmission control module issue that's causing it or the ECM you think?
My son had a stereo system installed and now the OBD 2 port doesn't communicate with the scan tool. I'm thinking they snipped a wire running to the port. What do you think? Everything else checks out..
Robb's Homemade Life ~ He did, (over a year ago), and he likes the idea of a cheap and highly fuel efficient car that most people can afford to buy new without an outrageous monthly payment. His video was titled, " Is This The Future Of Cars? 84 MPG ".
I work at a part store, we have the same scanner. Some asshat said we messed up his obd port cuz we plugged it in backwards? I'm a polish female, and I can pull off some pretty off the wall stuff...but that I cant even do that. Now. To fix my car
I have an 2002 Tahoe that won’t start and it won’t communicate with the scan tool. I have power because the check engine light is on, pins all look good. But what sensors would I start unplugging?
Question sir. My 2006 h3 hummer wonter start . Wont turn over. Something drained battery. Replaced bat alt ign sensor.removed fuse box to install alt. Thought maybe fuse box wasn't connected properly as it looked complicated. Also my FIXD sensor won't connect to my phone. Running out of options Any help would be appreciated tbanks
My scanner will communicate with the pcm and related sensors, but wont communicate with the abs system. The abs and brake lights are both on. I am guessing it is the abs module. Any thoughts? Oh it is a 01 Buick park Avenue.
I have a 2010 honda fit sport, I have a check engine light on. But I get, no codes stored in the module. Idk if it's canbus issue or what. The Strang thing is on my Autel scanner it says no codes in module on obd2 side, but on the all system scanner side it gives me a p0171 lean code.
Scott I have an important question I have a new genesis gv70 2.5 turbo car I have computer problems that are under warranty my concern is the they have told me the genesis tec team have told the service centre which is just a normal car dealership service centre that they need to check every pin tention point on the whole computer system?? This is a major concern for me as my understanding is they would have to basically dismantle the whole car into pieces to do that then rebuild the car would I be right in my assumption? I'm not comfortable having a service centre rebuild my top luxury car that's assembled by a AI assembly line factory not a bunch of car machanics at a service centre?? What's your thoughts please 🙏
Hi love the show, I have one for you it's to check all the fuses inside and outside the car , I had the same problem it's was a simple fuse that power powers the OBDII connector.
PLEASE HELP ME! I put a jumper(paperclip) between #4 and #8 on the OBD2 on my 03 cadillac seville to program a new key fob, and since mine didn't have an 8 I decided to try #7(dumb move) now my Trunk/fuel door bottons dont work and just realized today that My OBD2 isn't working either. Ive already checked every single fuse and relay and still nothing. Everything else works good so I doubt it if I nessed up the computer. What else can I check. Thanks
I have an issue with a 2018 Malibu. Same deal here. No Communication with the scan tool. This car had no computer and was vandalized I bought a computer and a new harness and plug everything like a puzzle. Replaced a ton of fuses and check connections to modules and still no Communication with the scan tool. Scan tool turns on I can't read any codes. Any ideas or suggestion as 2 what other steps I should take into diagnosing this vehicle.
What are some common tools used on VW's? Got a position at a VW dealership and want to make sure that I have everything I need. I read that I should definitely get a set of Torx sockets. Thanks
ive been working on cars for about 8 years, i even asked everyone else around here and no one has ever heard of unplugging sensors to get a code reader to work, not that im saying your wrong its just crazy we never ran into this problem. 95% of the time its always a blown fuse linked to the cigarette lighter. the other 5% is a screwed up wire at the port
i have a link error check fuses for ob2 good also checked fuses for cig lighter it was blown, i replaced it with a good one now my cig lighter works but i am still getting a link error do i have to drive the car to get the scanner to work without the link error after replacing the fuse? scanner works fine on my 07 bmw 335i but not on my 06 330ci it just says link error still? should i drive it and then it will reset after a drive cycle? i need it smogged, it passed 6 months ago but i need it smogged for transfer to me as guy had an old report (6 months olD) and dmv requires 90 days when transfered
Hi my friend thanks for all the videos really helps a lot. I have a question. I’m looking to purchase a reprogrammed to calibrate ecu can you give me good options tool . I fix cars and I need one that will work for most cars possibles. Thanks 🙏
Thank you for not being the majority of videos on this topic which strictly address checking the fuse (which is arguably the most-known and easiest problem)
Hi Scotty, is ok to leave the scan tool, or laptop with OBD2 Software connected while disconnecting each fuse one at a time? Thank you very much for your time.
Scotty. I have a 1997 Ram 150p pickup. The obd port gives not reading. Nothing. The truck runs great but I cannot get it inspected if not fixed. What should I do? Any recommendations? The dealership is trying to do a financial job on me with no Vaseline. Lol Give me the solution. Please
Hey +Scotty Kilmer. I have a 98 BMW 318ti with the check engine light on. The codes say its the first o2 sensor. So we got under the car and the mechanic said the o2 harness was shot. Any idea where to get one of those or even fix it?? Please Respond!!
Hey i have a 2006 honda civic an the scan tool not cummunicating with ecu. We unplug the can box an it communicate u think its the can box is the problem?
My 2004 bmw x5 will communicate with my old reader at home, but wont communicate with the smog testing machines from 2 different emission testing locations. Any ideas?
hi scotty i have a problem im owner of a 1997 fiat marea weekend estate engine turning over but wont fire im not get any current to crank sensor an i switch computers 3 times same thing cam sensor , timing belt etc need advise
Hi... I can not connect with ecu on my 2005 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8... when it try to connect to ecu the abs light start blinking... Each and every time... I tried different odb 2 devices and many apps on mobile device too... And same devices connect with my 2010 Toyota Corolla 1.3 very easy... Will you help me plz
Great video, when i first bought my f150 the cigar lighter and obd wasnt working turned out to be a broken fuse.. replaced it both worked... good to know the other possible errors and fixes
Umm, forgot to mention the overall test result from smog station, it said, "due to the fact that vehicle's on-board computer system has not completed the emission system's self-checks" What is that means? Is my car's OBD II port bad or something else? What would you recommend to do?
I am trying to scan the charger 2020 and I already have the subscription for the gate way, but it is not giving me any error and I know a lot of error. One of them is to calibrate the ABS on the power steering. It is giving me the error not equipped for all the jobs and doesn’t allow me to do automatic scan, select option please help if you have any
On Mazda 6 2006 2.3L the K-Line is not working, outputs 1.6V. I disconnected ABS, SRS, ECU, Lights there is not change. What can be causing this? Resistance pins 5 and 7 is 730ohms.
hey scotty I have a 2008 pontiac g6 what would cause a ac compressor to engage and disengage it's been doing that but recently I had the ac running while driving 45 mph all of a sudden I heard a loud screeching sound then I saw smoke coming from the front passenger side tire there was a strong burning smell too when I turned it back on th RPM drops the car start shaking what would cause this?
I have a 2004 g35 just put in a replacement engine in after blowing a hole in the block in the old one. Now it won’t start every thing looks ok hooked up right. What is happening is I am not getting any signal through the OBD2 as if the ECU was bad I took it to the Infiniti dealership and after being charged a fortune they told me that the ECU did seem to accept their reprogram but still would t get any signal . What is happening engine wise is there is no spark , fuel does come on cranks over real nice and sounds good and healthy just obviously the ECU doesn’t send signal to the coils to give it spark . I still think it’s a ECU problem I am currently saving up for a new one after buying 2 used ones just for them not to work but the dealership says they believe I messed up something on the wiring but the engine harness is still the same I’ve always had all that is different is the replacement engine which I got for the same model and year and manual transmission as well . Maybe give me your thoughts ?
Scotty, have an 01 f150, the truck cranks great, new starter, battery and fuel pump, seems like it wants to start, but no fuel, also noticed no mileage is reporting on dash and checked fuses... all good. no blown ones.. did hook scanner on to it, will not show any codes and no check engine light is on... very confusing. to say the least

make sure she's plugged in
she's all hard soldered unfortunately, have to find a way to make the software srop malfunctioning
Just unplug her husband sensor... lol !
Maybe you should trade her in on a newer model !
One with oversized headlights and a tighter suspension.

+Scotty Kilmer , if Chevrolet trucks won't communicate, it's most likely the cigarette lighter fuse. :) Thx for all your energetic videos.
This true? Lol
Second sensor I unplugged let the scanner do its thing. Thanks for the information. You always come through.
Thanks Scotty, you're a life saver!
Love your attitude and how you approach problems. I have a whole new perspective for how to solve problems
Very informative video, a lot of cars out there with this problem ☺️
You saved me I was going crazy checked everything now it's working THANKS!!
replaced a rear wheel bearing assembly last weekend, so satisfying doing it yourself
Makes me wonder. Why do you need a scanner when you have to search/communicate yourself with the car ? I allways watch your videos !
U have no clue how much you just helped me
Omg this would take FOREVER! The scan tools take forever to try to connect.
Great video!

Having a very similar problem right now, did you figure it out?
Have you had the same issue with this car?
do you have other scan tool to test your car ?
Mr.
Elio! I just found my “$100 Elio t-shirt” yesterday! I’d love to see your video showcase on that story!
I love you man....you fix my problems and save me a lot of money and time thank you again
Everything else checks out..
a bad sensor can cause a communication issue? is that the same as link error reading?
right on Scotty,Roger in the great white north, and yes we get corrosion in the connector
this is awesome. will save me tons of time! can the obd be used to detect starter signal, say on PCM pins 23 and 76?
Scotty kilmer do you know if a 98 Tacoma with a 2.7l would have to be programmed if I took it off the same year and everything from a junkyard truck?
Scotty! Please do a video on what you think of the Elio!
Great for everyone else...IF you have an organ donor card.

How to fix the k line obd2
I work at a part store, we have the same scanner. Some asshat said we messed up his obd port cuz we plugged it in backwards? I'm a polish female, and I can pull off some pretty off the wall stuff...but that I cant even do that. Now. To fix my car
I have an 2002 Tahoe that won’t start and it won’t communicate with the scan tool. I have power because the check engine light is on, pins all look good. But what sensors would I start unplugging?
Did you figure it out?
@@alecmartinez2927 I have looked at it yet. Soon…..lol
Question sir. My 2006 h3 hummer wonter start . Wont turn over. Something drained battery. Replaced bat alt ign sensor.removed fuse box to install alt. Thought maybe fuse box wasn't connected properly as it looked complicated. Also my FIXD sensor won't connect to my phone. Running out of options
Any help would be appreciated tbanks
Scotty, you're a star!
i have the same car with the same sorta issue and just ordered a new ECU before watching this and didn't do that testing so ill go do it now omg
well just tried unplugging a few sensors with this method but was unable to find the issue
Hi love the show, I have one for you it's to check all the fuses inside and outside the car , I had the same problem it's was a simple fuse that power powers the OBDII connector.
Oh the check engine light was on it was on for a lose gas cap
PLEASE HELP ME! I put a jumper(paperclip) between #4 and #8 on the OBD2 on my 03 cadillac seville to program a new key fob, and since mine didn't have an 8 I decided to try #7(dumb move) now my Trunk/fuel door bottons dont work and just realized today that My OBD2 isn't working either. Ive already checked every single fuse and relay and still nothing. Everything else works good so I doubt it if I nessed up the computer. What else can I check. Thanks
You are the best. Thank you, Sir.
Thanks
Thank you! didn't know that ECUs wont communicate if a sensor is shorted. I shall try it later on my Hyundai GrandStarex
Hey
If the fuse is ok and my diagnostic tool cant communicate with ECU
What is the problem??
What test i can do???
ive been working on cars for about 8 years, i even asked everyone else around here and no one has ever heard of unplugging sensors to get a code reader to work, not that im saying your wrong its just crazy we never ran into this problem. 95% of the time its always a blown fuse linked to the cigarette lighter. the other 5% is a screwed up wire at the port
well, I've seen it many times here in hot humid houston. the head and humidity tends to wreck havoc with computer systems
around chicago everything usually rusts in half and falls off before anything can go wrong with most parts
i have a link error check fuses for ob2 good also checked fuses for cig lighter it was blown, i replaced it with a good one now my cig lighter works but i am still getting a link error do i have to drive the car to get the scanner to work without the link error after replacing the fuse? scanner works fine on my 07 bmw 335i but not on my 06 330ci it just says link error still? should i drive it and then it will reset after a drive cycle? i need it smogged, it passed 6 months ago but i need it smogged for transfer to me as guy had an old report (6 months olD) and dmv requires 90 days when transfered
Thanks for sharing friend , I guess it's always a process of elimination , cheers
Awesome. Short quick and informative. 👍🏼
Lol
Give me the solution. Please

Great video, when i first bought my f150 the cigar lighter and obd wasnt working turned out to be a broken fuse.. replaced it both worked... good to know the other possible errors and fixes
Thoughts on the 370z? have you worked on one and found and major problems?
Was the engine running while you unplugged those sensors? 🤔
Umm, forgot to mention the overall test result from smog station, it said, "due to the fact that vehicle's on-board computer system has not completed the emission system's self-checks" What is that means? Is my car's OBD II port bad or something else? What would you recommend to do?
Hey Scotty, is it possible that i can fix my trans line on my 06 Pontiac g6 by myself? I have a trans leak.

+Scotty Kilmer how do I replace a tailgate on a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD
I am trying to scan the charger 2020 and I already have the subscription for the gate way, but it is not giving me any error and I know a lot of error. On Mazda 6 2006 2.3L the K-Line is not working, outputs 1.6V. I disconnected ABS, SRS, ECU, Lights there is not change. What can be causing this? Resistance pins 5 and 7 is 730ohms.
Is the Actron scanner any good? Which one is best for me?
hey scotty I have a 2008 pontiac g6 what would cause a ac compressor to engage and disengage it's been doing that but recently I had the ac running while driving 45 mph all of a sudden I heard a loud screeching sound then I saw smoke coming from the front passenger side tire there was a strong burning smell too when I turned it back on th RPM drops the car start shaking what would cause this?
oh I forgot to mention ac would stay engaged at high speed but disengage at idle before it started smoking
odds are compresor just locked up and is shot.
Hello. I love your videos so educative. How does one fix linking error to autel AL 519 obd scanner
I have a 02 ram 1500 i changed the heads and timing now it just cranks over and want start, what are some suggestions
If you ever had to change the main computer on a modern Corolla, would you be able to reprom it or you would need to go to the dealer ?
Scotty, have an 01 f150, the truck cranks great, new starter, battery and fuel pump, seems like it wants to start, but no fuel, also noticed no mileage is reporting on dash and checked fuses... all good. no blown ones.. did hook scanner on to it, will not show any codes and no check engine light is on... very confusing. to say the least
