      great video scotty kilmer, thanks very much for the information i really appreciate it man....Please tel me, if i am using the OBD port plugged into the car whilst the scan tool is pulled in the cigarette power port, will it cause damage to the scan tool?

      Scotty as a mechanic I just went through this on a Nissan. I was at my wits end, no communication with scanner, when I decided to check the DLC pins. I retensioned them, and got the scan tool to work. I got the dreaded U1000 code which is a story into itself, but it saved me money on another ecu which wasn't the issue.

    Some people saying this video is a sell out. I don't see where. No name was mentioned, No link to product in description, The umbrella doesn't even have a name on it. Everybody has to make a buck. Leave the guy alone. He is a great guy. How many repair videos has he made for TH-cam? How many people have sent him money for helping them out? I rest my case.

      I like his videos because they are to the point. He doesn't make you sit there and watch as he unbolts a nut. We all get how to take a nut or bolt off so why waste time. He is a sweet guy in person. -John

    • @Fireship1
      @Fireship1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't see a sell out either. Are our favorite sports teams sell outs because they wear nike and addis? It's good that people want to sponsor Scotty. Nothing wrong with that.

    • @Y10Q
      @Y10Q 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah but showing you how to unbolt a bolt is very useful. Go watch ETC's video where he changes a radiator on a Chrysler. He spent 30 minutes just getting one bolt out lol. Chrysler engineers hid it behind some plastic and metal pieces so you can't get to it unless you remove all the junk first and then you realize it's rusted and you have to cut it off. And so what is usually a 10 second unbolting turns into a two hour chore.

      Coolant temp sensor on mine. Still haven't replaced it. Just unplugging and replugging solved the communication issue. Still throwing a code for it, but now my scan tool is working again.

    so glad I came across this video, I haven't been able to pass my smog, I went to 3 different locations, finally last week guy told me, it's my OBD PORT, I didn't think about one could be bend. I paid for my registration, so the price wouldn't increase, but no sticker, today when I get home I'm going to check the port. I was about to go to the dealership, they want $195 to do a diagnostic check, if they fix the issue, then they told me they would credit that towards the bill. I have a 2012 Toyota Camry SE, I LOVE MY CAR I have 103K miles on it the warranty just expired at 100K, will post an update sometime this weekend. thanks again for sharing your GREAT KNOWLEDGE ON CARS.

    This helped me a TON when trying to get my 2009 Pontiac G6 to connect to my OBD2 sensor. Had the connectivity problem and turned out to be s sensor on the engine... I couldn't figure it out forever!!! After checking fuses, reading other articles online, etc.. I just kept driving it over the last year with a check engine light on because nothing seemed out of wack. I was gonna just run it to the ground because I was so stumped!
    Thanks Scotty!

I've programmed the key and fob that works but won't crank and no communication with 2 different scanner's snap-on veris and an enova. YOu just gave me a turn. Cause I was at a Dead End.. thank you. Welcome to Australia, OBD2 became standard in 2006 and anything before then generally never works regardless if you have an OBD2 port or not, however this makes you learn manufacturer specific diagnostics - Toyotas E1 and TE1 jumper, Subaru diagnostic connectors/FreeSSM/Romraider etc etc

    One of my friends has a fairly new (two year old) Kia Cerato. He took it to the dealer for a software update, it failed at 99%. Wouldn't communicate, wouldn't start, nothing. The car was dead, all of it. ECU, dash, lighting, everything. They unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it didn't help.
    Kia ordered a new ECU (warranty) but it took two weeks to arrive. While they were waiting my friend did more research into it. Turns out that you need to leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours. He told the dealer that, and they tried that. Hey presto, they were able to enter a recovery mode, reflash/update the ECU and all good. They didn't need to replace the ECU after all.

    Although unlikely, had two sensors that been shorted out or faulty you would have changed the ECU going by your logic and what you said. You would unplug one bad sensor but because the device still wouldn't communicate you assumed it was not that sensor and plugged it back in. After going through all the sensors you would still have no comms and assume it was the ECU computer. Best to unplug the sensors one at a time and check comms WITHOUT plugging them back in. That is the only way you can be 100% sure it is not one of them causing the comms problem.

    Some businesses in ebay sells rebuild car computers for like $120 - $240. What's even better is some of them reprogram it for you, just send them your VIN and whatever it's necessary. You may have to send back your old one for core exchange.. In my past, a mini van had a faulty TCM and it had P0500 and P0605 codes. I order a ebay rebuild TCM, swap it, and it still works today. The P0500 and P0605 codes disappeared when I replaced the TCM.

    • @DementedButtHole
      @DementedButtHole 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a good idea to purchase a rebuilt computer. They only redo the cold solder joints. Keeping P=I.I.R in perspective, what do you suppose happened to the ICs while a cold solder joint in the computer gave out gradually? ICs have a very small headroom for fluctuations caused by a bad solder joint elsewhere in the circuit.

    ive been working on cars for about 8 years, i even asked everyone else around here and no one has ever heard of unplugging sensors to get a code reader to work, not that im saying your wrong its just crazy we never ran into this problem. 95% of the time its always a blown fuse linked to the cigarette lighter. the other 5% is a screwed up wire at the port

    Mr. Kilmer. I am having trouble figuring out my truck. 2003 Dodge Dakota SLT 3.9. It was running for about an hour and just shut off by itself and it won't start back up. It has plenty of gas and I'm getting a spark. I bought a new MS300 scanner but it won't read anything on my truck. Your input would be appreciated.

    Hey Scotty! I have just found you a few weeks ago on youtube, love your channel! if i could ask you a question?
    My car is a 2006 Buick lacrosse 3.8L V6, it is having a similar issue, my OBD2 says CRC error, and wont connect to diagnostics. My car diagnostics port is clean and nothing bent, i have my engine light on and working when i start the car, i wanted to try to do the sensor test you did (my car doesn't have a computer fuse in the fuse box) but i dont know what sensors to test with, do you have a list?

    I just got a new scan tool, it works but a great thing to know. When I was an active ASE tech, they didn't have this type tool. Really basic ones or my trusty Snap-on scanner. :)
    I'm more interested in the "fall out" shelter, I'm in GA so, tornadoes 🌪and zombies are quite likely. :)
    Is that a modular installation or custom poured?

    I replaced the body control module on a 2005 ford mustang 4.0 v6 engine. Haven't programmed it but the car runs fine no issues. Just it has abs traction control and the brake light on. I checked all the fuses they are not blown. I have an the computer scanner and I'm not able to get communication with the abs system or the power control module. Have you had the same issue with this car?

    Hi Scotty, is ok to leave the scan tool, or laptop with OBD2 Software connected while disconnecting each fuse one at a time? Thank you very much for your time.

    What are some common tools used on VW's? Got a position at a VW dealership and want to make sure that I have everything I need. I read that I should definitely get a set of Torx sockets. Thanks

    My son had a stereo system installed and now the OBD 2 port doesn't communicate with the scan tool. I'm thinking they snipped a wire running to the port. What do you think? Everything else checks out..
