Yes, quite unfair! The man was super strong. In terms of sheer strength he was the strongest that day I believe. But WSM is about speed and technique more than brute strength.
Just to confirm: Paul Dickenson (who is my preferred commentator) said that Magnus was vying to be the first competitor to ever win two in succession (to defend his title); in fact, Bill Wilhelm and Kasmire did that in 77/78 and 80-82, respectively.
I was wondering the same thing and scrolled down to the comments to see what people were saying and low and behold, the top comment mentioned it. I was wondering if there was some sort of filter the commentator had in mind like the first Icelander to... or the first man in the 90s to win 2 titles in a row!

Always loved Magnus Ver Magnusson, but when that barrel rolled off the platform after he turned his back.... LMAO. Still he gets it back on there for the win! Champ!
That’s what I was thinking. Kaz won three in a row but they always try to leave him out. Kind of like they did in 83..the most dominant athlete of his time he could’ve taken four or five titles in a row
That's why I always say that Kaz was goat of wsm. Not only was he insanely dominant in his time, even got cancelled for being too good. He also was the first athlete who actually trained specifically for wsm like strongmen.
I feel like these events used to be much more grip and arm focused (no straps, lighter but more awkward implements that you can't easily get your mass under), whereas today they're more tailored to moving sheer weight, taking grip out of it with straps, and locked in with bigger but less awkwards impliments. Nobody talks about this. The old school seems much more athletic to me/ transferable to moving random objects, which aren't necessarily made to be moved, and things like wrestling, arm wrestling etc. For some reason people stopped talking about straps in the deadlift when the established logical standard since the lift was invented was no straps on a normal bar. Benny Magnusson and Andy Bolton are still the best ever in that form. I think Andy still has the stiff bar no strap record.
210 kg for overhead is huge (Gary Taylor) Since then Z and Eddie Hall did 215 and 216 kg respectively on the axle press -- which they also cleaned. No cleaning motion in this competition, however, making it easier. Still very impressive though.
There is no way during prelims did the officials say “now if you want to, you can actually walk the items up the stairs to place the items” on that last event. Gary Taylor would have absolutely did that and a few others too prob…that was a horse shit event, Taylor got robbed
@@AnthroGuitarist In normal life it's about 5'11", but for a pro athlete in a sport like Strongman, yes about 6'2" minimum. Basketball is 6'6" minimum.
Gary Taylor should have carried the treasure chest first, it had the length for him to leverage it up onto the highest platform. How did he not see that while watching the guys go before him? He worked hard and not smart there! That's the lesson to take away from that.
@@davidanderson4489 he's right. As late as 1998 guys were getting injured by the car flip falling onto them, stupid events in some of these. Arm wrestling between guys who aren't trained arm wrestlers is also just asking for injuries
Yeah, but some were unfair for the taller men too. Gary Taylor, seriously... he was so not smart in that last event. He even had the luxury of watching before hand and should have worked out some tactics knowing he'd struggle with the sandbag. If he carried the treasure chest first, he could have hoisted it upright and used the leverage to push it up onto the top platform. There were no rules about order.
Phil Martin, lovely bloke, but he cracked me up... supposed world record holder in his speciality Highland Games events, and in both his heat and the final he was shit at them, and got firmly beaten! lol At least Gary Taylor did the biz and owned his specialist event!
A bit too heavy for the top probably, but I get your logic. Gary Taylor, though, seriously... he went towards the end, and even after watching the other guys he couldn't figure out to take the treasure chest to the top platform first, where he could have used its length and shape to leverage it up better. What he did was so dumb! Unless he didn't know the rules that even the commentator knew. Disappointed in a fellow Welshman there!
Just don't understand why Gary Taylor didn't carry the treasure chest first, and use its length to leverage it up to the highest platform. There were no rules as to what went where, and he was watching a bunch of guys go before him, knowing he'd never get the sandbag up high. What was he doing?? Work smart, not hard.. lol
@@jordanpratt3821 Yeah, I really wonder back then if the rules were really made clear to the competitors, or whether they were all just being sheep and placing the objects in the same order as everyone else. Because the commentator knew that they could place stuff anywhere! Obviously the really heavy stuff would have to go low, but there wasn't much in it weight wise between the chest and awkward sand bag.
@@jordanpratt3821 Magnus Samuelsson cracked me up one time when he was doing a strongest arms video and admitted that what they were doing was dumb shit! @@jordanpratt3821 100%. He was definitely one of the top 3 strongest guys there. Using the Flintstone Barrell as an example. Both Onosai and Taylor lifted 205kg and 210kg convincingly easy. We are still left not truly knowing which one is the strongest. If they could keep going until one fails, we would truly know which of them has stronger shoulders.
