"Jane" was arranged as a rock hit by Jefferson Starship lead guitarist, Craig Chaquico. He wrote the guitar riffs and licks (and the solo!), along with the bass, drum and keyboard parts. He was instrumental in the hiring of Thomas after Grace Slick and Marty Balin left the band and wrote the rock arrangement to what had been brought to the band as a folk love ballad initially by David Freiberg and his writing partner, Jim McPherson.

I had some time to kill in early '84 I think and responded to a last minute call on local radio in LA to attend a free concert for the forthcoming movie "Hard To Hold" starring Rick Springfield and Susan Sarandon at the LA Sports Arena. Rick Springfield played a few tunes - including "Jessie's Girl" but what wasn't announced was that Jefferson Starship would play a free concert. They played for two hours and it was back-to-back hits! It was badass! I was so blessed to see Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick bring it and then later see the movie. Very cool...!

The LP is named Freedom at Point Zero because Paul Kantner basically had to rebuild the band after Marty Balin and Grace Slick had left. Marty to his solo career while Grace (finally) went into rehab for her drinking problem. This is the most popular song from the LP, but Girl With the Hungry Eyes and the title song are both worth giving a listen to.

    Hey guys,
No, this was the first album (Freedom At Point Zero, 1979) to feature Mickey Thomas on vocals. After the previous album Earth (1978), both Grace Slick and Marty Balin left the group. Then the band hired Mickey Thomas. Grace Slick doesn't perform on this album at all -- she didn't rejoin the band for another two years, not until the next album Modern Times (1981) -- and on that platter she did only a single duet with Mickey and some background vocals. The album following that (1982's Winds of Change) is when her presence is really abundant and she sings lead on several tracks.
One of my previous bands opened shows for these guys and on every occasion Mickey belted this song to perfection. Fantastic singer and an all-around nice guy :)

Also wondering if you reacted to Elvin Bishop “fooled around and fell in love” because that’s who Mickey Thomas was with before he joined Jefferson starship and that is a phenomenal funky song

The members of Jefferson Starship in 1979 consisted of, Mickey Thomas, David Freilberg, Craig Chaquico, Ansley Dunbar, Pete Sears and Paul Katner. This a group that went through quite a few changes through the years, from members quitting to changing the name of their group. They were called Jefferson Airplane til 1974, then they changed their name to Jefferson Starship then Grace Slick left the band in 1978 then rejoined after member Paul Katner left in 1981 and THEN in 1984 they changed their name to simply "Starship". Before Grace Slick left the group in 1978 they did a song called "Count On Me" that was a hit for them. But, yeah the one who's singing hear is Mickey Thomas. Take a listen to a couple of songs from their early days of Jefferson Airplane like, "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love", even though they went through some changes, they were basically the same group minus a member at times. Sorry so lengthy but, if I was going to give you the story, it couldn't be helped. Awesome video reaction!

I think I should make a semi-attempt at clearing something up. Jefferson Starship, the band as it’s known from 1974 to present, which was originally known (from 1972-1974) as Jefferson Airplane…… had 2 main/lead singers in it at the SAME TIME.
1 male and 1 female. And just to make things even MORE confusing, the male sung at a very HIGH- pitched voice!
    The man’s name:
    Mickey Thomas
    The woman’s: Grace Slick
In the song “JANE” the lead was sung by the man (Mickey) and the background vocals were sung by the female (Grace) along with some other members of the band like guitarists and so forth.
Mickey and Grace are both in their 80’s now. So,the band still performs, but with a mix of 3 original members, plus replacement members to include a female lead singer named Cathy Richardson. She’s in her 50’s and can really belt it out!!
*But when you’re listening to their old songs, it’s really hard for an ear to distinguish the difference between the sound of male / female voice- especially of Mickey’s- unless you already knew who sang which songs.

I as an Elvin Bishop fan and knew Mickey Thomas was going to get snatched up by a power rock band. I would have preferred him going to a different band than Starship but this song did give him a great platform. But I wonder how he would be perceived if he had gone to a harder rocking band. I suspect he would be considered up there towards the top.
