Converting My New Van! Designing a Layout & Starting the Build | Build Ep. 1

  • Hi!! Thanks for tagging along with my new van build!! Teller and I spent a lot of time planning and prioritizing what we need most in this new van, and we have finally locked in a layout design that we are so excited about. I am going for a cottage feel again, but this time I am outfitting the van to be the perfect mobile crafting space! I just can’t wait to make so much art on my travels 🎨
    In this video, we are doing rust prevention and cleaning, installing the subfloor, putting in insulation, and more! I hope you will feel like you are hanging out with Teller and I while we build our home in this no-commentary conversion series. For instructional content on building out a van, I highly recommend @Linneaandakela & @ladiandmargaret, which are my biggest source of information for my own build-journey!
    I hope you follow along on our adventure!
    Stay safe friends!! See you soon :)

    Your videos are stories. There is plenty of "how-to" that people can get, but they aren't how-to videos. It is the story of your build. I like that.

    Oh my gosh, this is the first time a van build actually looks relaxing and enjoyable. (although I am pretty sure it probably wasn't as relaxing to experience as it seems) Looking forward to seeing how it develops!

    • @milomeloy
      @milomeloy  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      hahaha there are definitely certain parts of the build that can be relaxing! Especially the beginning stages :) Even when it does get stressful and overwhelming, the sense of accomplishment from finishing a hard part makes it all worth it!
      Thanks for watching!!

    Gosh I just love your videos. From your very first video you brought a sense of warmth and friendship and comfort, creativity, and love. My daughter is 6 and she loves watching van videos with me. She asked for one with cooking and I played her your bolognese video. She was skeptical about the recipe until you added the cheese haha and she loved your art especially once you started painting the water color pencil. She said “Wow! He can paint ANYTHING” lol Anyway I’m only 6 minutes in and already I feel like I’m in the comfort of a great friend. Your vibe always keeps me looking forward to your content. Best wishes to you in all you do! 😊🐶🚐

    So thorough showing us each detail to the build, including your checklist journal with art! So soothing with the music, not a lot of talk and of course, Milo. TH-cam therapy, educational, and inspiration all combined into one. Great job, Milo. You've got a new fan. 🫶

    One great time-saving thing you've taught me -- get someone else to do this step. My hands shake constantly and cutting straight lines is nearly impossible. It's important to know my deficits, but I know I have strengths, as well -- friends and family that are handy with tools, plus a little extra money to throw at problems. 👍Thank you for another fantastic video!

    I'm looking forward to seeing more episodes in the future and maybe even more builds! Maybe next time go even bigger with a box truck lol. I've never seen that kind of wool batting insulation before, what brand is it? What made you choose it over the more common van brand I've seen around, Havelock wool?

    OMG! I really didn't know that you can just glue the frame down instead of drilling holes in the floor, which always seemed like such a bad idea to me. You're the first one I've seen do this. 🥰

    • @milomeloy
      @milomeloy  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes!! In my research, I learned that gluing the beams to the metal is better because it doesn't create a thermal bridge like screws do! Plus you don't have to worry about rust on the screw holes. :)

  • @danthesquirrel
    @danthesquirrel ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting, the floor grid is held on with glue. I just finished watching a video where a young woman spilled a quart of milk in her van, it went through the cracks of her flooring and soaked her plywood sub-floor so she had to cut a square out of it and replace it (it must not have been sealed). Her story convinced me that (1) one solid piece of linoleum with no cracks for liquid is a good choice for flooring, and (2) I am so freaked out by the thought of liquid and wood trapped under the floor as an unstoppable mold farm that I am thinking of looking in to plastic alternatives to plywood (for the floor). If a person does put wood down there then sealing it (like you did) is not a step to miss.
    Painting the floor to prevent rust was another good call (and something I might have missed). I'll definitely add that to my van build list. And your choice of two MaxAir fans (instead of just one) is another good call. Ventilation (and daylight) is more important than increasing roof solar panel space. And the Thinsulate you chose also seems to be the best insulation for it's low weight, sound deadening, R value and resistance to mold.
    One of the things I didn't even see on your want list was a toy bin. I saw a video of another woman who had a dinosaur hand puppet and was working on a Halloween coloring and activity book (marked suitable for ages 6 - 8). It looked so awesome. I plan on sharing my bin with my cat. If you go with one you might want to put a divider in if Teller slobbers on his toys or gets them muddy or wet.

    Thank you for showing all the steps in the build. It almost makes me think I might be able to do *some* of it someday, though I'm 60 years old with no cabinetry or construction experience!
    And Teller is the cutest, floofiest co-pilot ever! You may address this in a later video, but how do you groom him on the road? He must need frequent brushing with that coat, and frequent baths to wash out all the souvenirs from his adventures!
