First: I try to understand everything, in as much possible detail. I noticed that this knowledge helped me to remember all the information during medschool!
Second: Keep recapping and repeating! Repeating is the mother of all wisedome 😏👍

Yes, spaced repetition and active recall are the best ways to learn. Thanks doc!

In pre-med science, "getting the big picture" definitely helps me. Diving right into micro-anatomy doesn't help much...I gotta know what I'm learning about on a bigger scale so I can internalize it better.

A note on recording lectures, just make sure to ask the professor for consent (by email would be best probably) to record either every lecture for the semester/quarter, or before every lecture you want to record, then ask the professor beforehand. Some professors will be fine with it, and others will not for a number of reasons (whether they encourage student attendance, or just don't want to be recorded).
    Thanks for the informative video!

Not “medical” training but nursing - we made up scenarios then talked our way through it; always asking why: why did they come in [collapse]. Why did they collapse [stroke]. Why did the stroke happen [clot in the brain]. Why did an artery clot in the brain etc.

I'm old school. Studying medical terminology I did flash cards. I had to make the cards myself. That helped also. Making the cards and studying from my own handwriting. Listening to it never helped me. Each person has to find what works for them. I was a medical assistant in the 90s.

    Great video
    I learned SQ3R for reading a chapter,
S Study, look at the bold print heading, the pictures, first paragraph, last paragraph, test question at the end of the chapter,
Q Question, guess what you expect to learn,
R Read, finally, what did you guess right, wrong,
    R Review, immediately review
R Recite, at increasingly spaced time: at 10 minutes, at 1 hour, at 3 hours, at 6 hours, at 12 hours, at 24 hrs, at 2 days, at week, etc.
If you do reading alone, you will only remember 5% next month
With frequent review and reciting, this can be boosted up to 50% at about double the reading time,

@@antoniowebbmd , I used to teach undergrad/grad psych classes and have been involved with academia (either teach/student) for most of my adult life. You have explained it as well or better than most professors/ colleagues I've known (currently have a private practice as a (psychotherapist). I briefly mention memory in my other channel, though I haven't devoted time to TH-cam to the desired extent, unfortunately. Feel free to view pt 1 and 2 of my latest vids entitled Pain, Purpose, and the Pursuit of Betterment...I could use the views, lol..
Thanks, Dr. Webb. Appreciate your insight, kindness, and response....the world needs more of it.

Great study tips, I like to use active recall as well though I find that it takes up a lot of time.

  • @LemonScissors

I do associations and also small movements or sequences of movements, like a choreography, saying the term out loud so i think of it but also hear my voice saying it, as i do each move. If i dont verbally remember the sequence of the terms, i do the moves following the order and that helps me remember :) Thank you for sharing yours!

if youre in medical school, lecturio is a joke. Use anki for your spaced repetition.

    • @glencmac
      @glencmac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yea, I have to agree. Lecturio videos are too slow and not high yield enough. Basically the same fluff filled taking head lectures that you get in school. Well, if your school records lectures, why pay for Lecturio. As for how I do it. I call it "pound your brain into the book until you have a subdural hematoma". Not very new age, but it focuses on answering the one question you will NEVER be asked in medical school or boards but will use on wards every day . .... "Why?" I got a patient today, has Downs. MVC was like 130. B12 deficiency my young padawan said .... no .... normal! Why??? Downs patients process folate differently. Why? ... longer than we have here. But! live by the 5 why rule and you will actually know something.
