Messiah is much better as a vocalist, but johan did a great job in epicus doomicus metallicus album. In my opinion both of them are awesome. Candlemass is such a great gift from God!
The thing is: we like Johan and recognize his importance in the band’s history. But Messiah is one step up (vocally speaking). His voice and technique are clearly and unmistakably better. We can’t even compare.
No, Messiah exaggerated the use of vibrato "up to eleven" (to use some Spinal Tap jargon). It was _overused_, and is more akin to going for "the moneyshot" for every session of coitus. For referance, 80s Dickinson was far more clever in using vibrato as a tool to make a narrative impact to any song. I _do_ adore Messiahs vocals, but cannot escape a sensation of "hear what I can do - and I do it _ALL_ the time". It gets a bit silly, like Stuart from Mad Tv (look what I can do!). Johan is simply a "natural storyteller" in his use of his voice as an _instrument_ and as a tool of narration. Thankfully now we have the opportunity to explore further with Johan. I would very much like to experience his take on the Bellman cover of Epistle no. 81
Messiah is perfect for Candlemass and the best singer they had ! He is a great frontman, he looks cool and has a lot of personality and charisma. He has a unique and very distinct voice.
Messiah voice is by far more darker than Johan's voice. The vocal mix at the Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is great and Johan sounds good. But, Messiah is better.
It's all about vocal technique, right? Simply, no. Johan (my opinion) is "much better" as an interpreter, artistically speaking he simply goes a lot further to the listener (for those who aren't "interested" or just an ordinary listener where what matters is feeling at all). This isn't to say that Marcolin isn't a good interpreter, far from it. Both are savage interpreters and singers; different styles, one a bit more epic, other: a bit more eerie.
Johan did an amazing job on Epicus, and still does in the band today, considering that I just listened to the Sweet Evil Sun cd I got in the mail today and loved it. But Messiah just has that 'IT' factor, that uniqueness that can't be explained. Its like listening to 6 different isolated guitarists demos and trying to guess which one was Eddie Van Halen, you don't have to guess, you just know. That's the IT factor.
Messiah for the vocal, but Johan's producer for for mixing Johan's voice into the record better. I fully feel Mesiah is the better vocalist, but there is a drastic difference in how the records were engineered and Johan's voice is much more forward and present in the mix. Even on the remastered versions, there is an injustice to Messiah's vocal.
I'm split between those two version completly different of Under The Oak, Johan as done the darkest version that I can feel way more deeply inside here with his Voice that sound more "Depressive" that's makes us think that's someone who just cut his chest and split his heart in two pieces who is singing this song so it sound so Dark here, more than the version Of Messiah with his voice more Disconnected... But for Solitude I Feel more that Messiah it the same spot that Johan does on Under The Oak and he Been able To get the same result even with his Disconnected more Classical Voice... So for those two song 1 point for Johan And the One for messiah, but If we go on the other song I prefer Messiah for his Vocal range and technique more Than Johan, but I give a Big thumps up👍 to Both singer who make That Band Possible!!!👌

The best singer they had was, Thomas Vikstrom....tecnicaly. Johan its diferent...but its good. Messiah also very good , have more vibration on the voice , holding the notes for a litle bit more...give the feeling that he is better, but he's not.
Was thinking: It's like comparing Terminator 1 vs Terminator 2. Both are awesome. But one is a full blown action blockbuster full of technical marvel and the other is more of horror movie full of guts and passion but without the finesse. It's personal preference really. I prefer T1 for it's flawed but human experience, but acknowledge T2 is more crafted and full of mesmerising technical wizardry

Messiah is definitely the best vocalist Candlemass ever had his vocal clarity and dynamics are on a par with the late great Ronnie Dio
