    No no no.. the “pick” is meant for aerating your tobacco in the bowl if it’s packed too tight. You don’t want to ram that into the stem do any reason. You only use the wire type pipe cleaners . The “pill crusher” on the knife is for tampering down you tobacco in the bowl, the opposite of aerating.

      Yep. I've been corrected on more that one occasion about that! Thanks for chiming in. This is what happens when a non-smoker talks about pipes and goes by what he read and not by actual use!

    I recieved mine today and I really like it. The tobacco bone is done very well. Even the pipe shield inlay has a little notch to show the stem piece. I love the sheepsfoot blade. For 15 bucks, you can't beat it.

    Unfortunately I've come to the Rough Ryder table too late, and missed out on some great patterns that are now out of production. Like this featured knife, the micarta work knife (RR2038), and the boxcar knife. Most likely RR will never issue any more, and finding them on eBay or elsewhere is a frustrating effort. Thank you, and keep the videos coming!

    Although out of production, I managed to find an eBay seller with a handful for sale, so I bought one for myself and one for my best friend, both of us being pipe smokers, and we are awaiting arrival of them as I write this. I've had many different pipe tools over the years, including standard Czech tools, pipe nails, and a cheap pipe knife or two, and I believe this will be my go-to tool in the future. It's certainly the most elegant looking tool of its kind that I've seen.
    Love your videos, Tobias!

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias I received my knife today, and I'm going to correct myself, it was through Amazon, not eBay.
      So upon initial inspection, I noticed that the blade and pick sat up quite proud from the handle, so much so in fact that the tip of the blade was not quite falling into the groove, and that bugged me a bit, both aesthetically and functionally. Since the cap functions as a tamper, the blade was getting in the way of it being perfectly useful. The upside is that it's an eighteen dollar knife, so I didn't hesitate to grind the kick on both blades down a bit to meet my expectations.
      Having done that, I am otherwise quite impressed with the quality. It is beautiful to look at, feels nice in the hand, has great walk and talk, and locks up as well as any slip joint could be expected to. The main blade was delivered razor sharp, and proved to slice Peterson's 3P's. a dense Irish-style plug tobacco I enjoy, effortlessly. Easily the best pipe tool I own, and a fantastic pocket knife at this price point! My friend loves his, too. So there you have it, two experienced pipe smokers who heartily endorse this knife. Great job, Rough Ryder.
      Incidentally, mine has the "Rough Ryder" stamp on the tang, so later production as you noted.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@herbcraven7146, unfortunately you’re not the only person who has had similar problems where they needed to grind down the kick. As you said it’s an easy fix but it is something that should be caught at the factory. It does seem these are showing up more and more on the secondary market. Sorry that this happened to you.

    • @herbcraven7146
      @herbcraven7146 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias Thanks! Now that this is fixed, I totally love the knife. If it were going to be a collector's piece, I'd be mad, but the Pipe Doctor, for me, anyway, is going to spend its life doing the work it was designed for, so I'm not upset about having to modify my tools to suit me.

    i got one of these and it is rock solid! no flaws on it, no gaps, no blade wobble. one of my favorite rough riders. i like the light bone dyes, i've been soaking my knives in hot water to leach all the extra dye. the red ones and blue ones need to soak for a long time, overnight or more, but these light brown ones don't leach any dye. i soaked a blue moon trapper for so long the shield fell off, but i bought more of them so i don't care. i can probably just glue it back on.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a nice knife. Thanks for the tip on leaching the dye out of the bones. I might have to try that with some of the knives I have.

    • @chris_topher1984
      @chris_topher1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias good luck with it. out of 12 rough rider knives, i have issues getting the dye out of 3 remaining ones. the strawberry red bone hunter, the red fish toothpick knife, and my blue moon trapper all have soaked for over a day or two and they still displayed lots of color bleed. i was scrubbing them every hour or two as well. there is also slight rust forming on the back springs of the hunter, and the blue moon trapper has a small blemish on the blade tang. so it does damage them a bit, but i want to be able to use my knives with wet hands and not worry about color bleed. i might try a really long soak for a few days, maybe use alcohol too instead of dawn dish soap water. if i can't get the dye out, then i just wont use these three knives, not a huge deal. i wish this wasn't an issue though, i really hate chemicals and dyes getting on me.

    I've smoked a pipe since I was 14. Not that often now, although I make a point of smoking ad nauseam on National No Smoking Day. I just bought this knife, and I must say it's far nicer to look at than any of the other pipe knives I have. The tamper (or, as you correctly observe, the hijacked pill-crusher) isn't that good at its job, but it'll do. I agree with your assessment of its being head and shoulders above the run-of-the-mill pipe tool, and this now serves as my regular pipe accessory. The smooth tobacco bone is just perfect!

    Hi, I smoke a pipe and already have a couple of dedicated pipe knives. The flat bottom of the rough ryder one is for tamping the ashes down as your smoking. It’s something you have to do because as the baccy is burning it lifts in the bowl. It’s quite an essential part of a pipe knife as the task plays havoc with your thumb skin, being so hot

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Carroll, thanks for the info. As I have never smoked a pipe I am ignorant of just how the tamping was done. I assumed it was for packing the bowl. Now I know better. (I'm pinning this post)

    I am a pipe smoker and enjoy the occasional cigar.
    I think that I'll pick up one of these knives to try out. I would suggest however that the pick isnt really used for cleaning the steam even though some might try that. It is used much more often for stirring your tobacco within the bowl when and if the need arises. Additionally that pick would also come in handy for a cigar that is wrapped to tightly. Sometimes one must skewer a cigar lengthwise to create an airway for an easier draw.
    I might also add that in all my days I have never had the need to cut mt tobacco before filling my pipe.
    The blade on a pipe knife is used primarily to very lightly clean the inside of the bowl.
    The blade on this particular model is very long for a pipe knife however and might be a bit awkward.
    Just my two cents
    RESPECT

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. You are correct about the pick. I even talk about by ignorance i this in the pinned comment. It’s for stirring the bowl.

    • @censusgary

      Pipe tobacco used to be sold in plugs and “ropes,” both of which had to be cut up before they were smoked. So the knife blade may be an homage to that history.

    I'm dreadfully wrong about the pick on the knife. Ir is not for cleaning the stem or any other part of a pipe but is actually used for poking the tobacco/embers in the bowl to improve air flow.

  • @hugotipple
    @hugotipple 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's not what the pick is for. It won't fit through the mouthpiece of 99.9% of the pipes. It's used to loosen the tobacco when it's packed too tight on the bowl. You just use the pick to poke some holes on the tobacco inside the bowl, to make the air pass through.

      I think the phrase they used was Case number one among USA made traditional patterns and that SMKW sells more Case knives than any other retailer. I'm not sure if that is 100% accurate but it could very well be. But I bet Red Hill Cutlery and Frost give them a run for their money.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly? Actually good for you! I also am not a smoker. The main reason I picked up my first Pipe Tool, was because it was an interesting pattern (that was the Sheffield Knife). I bought the second one for my White Smooth Bone collection. I bought this one just to compare it to the others.
      What I've found out, is the pick comes in handy for other things. I often use it when cleaning crud out from the channels where the blades drop on slip joint knives. I also use it to open up the holes on thing like glue bottles and such, not to mention small air hoses. Obviously, there are other things out there that can do the same thing, so this is not a reason to pick up such a knife.
      If I pick up another one, it'll probably be to gift it to someone who actually smokes a pipe.
      Thanks for watching. I guess I'll need to do a video on Bartender tools. I've been known to have a sip now and then!

      Cafelogis, actually the design was created by Andy (of Guys Talk Knives). He is a knife designer for Rough Ryder Knives and a Pipe Smoker. He looked at a Doctors knife and thought Huh! That could easily be turned into a pipe tool!
