  • The Old Southwest is a new series by Rough Rider. Currently the only knife available is the RR1750 Canoe. I take a look at it as well as other similar Rough Rider Canoes that have that old Southwest feel to them.

      They has a great symmetry and fit the pocket quite well. The cut away also adds to the ability to put a wider blade in a slimmer than expected handle. They are pretty cool!

    I have the Stockman Old Southwest. Love it. This Old Southwest Canoe is definitely the best looking one. I have the Patriot series canoe and I think it looks elegant and awesome. But this Old West Canoe really looks fantastic. I am a fan of Stockmans but this canoe is making me consider ordering it. I agree that a pratical everyday knife should not have etched artwork on the blade but oh well. Great video.

      The problem with the Old SouthWest series is the black enamel is not bonded to the metal covers very well and is not going to stand up to pocket carry, even if it is pocket carried in a slip! But it does look good!

    I just picked up a Rough Rider "Old Southwest" canoe, and I must say that for my first canoe and sub $25 knife, I'm amazed at the quality and heft of this knife. This is a user, not a safe queen, and definately has a feel of usability and pocket art about it. Had to travel from Niagara Falls to Texas to find one on a shelf (we by passed SMKW) and this canoe will make a perfect vacation remembrance. I particularly like the swedge and match strike pulls on both blades...actually very classy.

    Canoe fan here and I do carry them. I have many but this Old Southwest one is and feels unique. Maybe it's the all steel construction and the half-stops. Thank you for doing this video as it inspired me to go ahead and buy it (a few months ago but just got back around to add a comment). I fell for the canoe knife (by Buck) as an outdoor guide back in the 70's & 80's because when folded in the pocket the tang ends don't catch on and cut your pockets, sheaths, or slips when you try to extract it. Anyone who likes canoes I think will love this Old Southwest canoe pattern knife.
    Last year I picked up one of my personal grails with a GEC #16 Canoe pattern made back in 2012, she's a beaut. You don't here about them as much.
    BTW Abalone is usually a multi-colored affair picked from the shell in layers but MOP (mother of pearl) is usually a more ubiquitous layer on the abalone shell.

With the knives I have on hand and how much I like them (some are unique enough to not even have a presence on you tube yet are available), I could write the script for a short presentation on a bunch of them but alas I just don't have the ambition to start a new hobby/interest. You are amassing quite the nice collection of Canoe pattern knives and it looks as if RR has produced quite a few gems! Based on my limited research of the Canoe, it is quite popular now. I can't seem to find any "canoe" examples prior to the 1960's. Is it a relatively recent (last 50 years) Case developed pattern? Thanks again!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      JJ Cahill, now you’ve got me thinking. I really don’t know how old the pattern is or where it came from. I’ll need to do more research. I do know some traditional patterns really aren’t as old as some might think. Thanks for watching and thanks for your insights in the pattern!

    • @jjcahill8934
      @jjcahill8934 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From my perusal of old catalog .pdf files and online sales, the oldest canoe pattern I have seen bears the CASE XX (1940-64) tang stamp. The pattern seems to have really caught on in the 1980's with mostly German manufacturers along with Case. Now they really are ubiquitous with Case and RR having the most variety. Excellent pattern! :)

      From what I've been reading it appears to have come about in the early 20th century. Several sources say pre-World War One, with one or two source saying 1915. It also sounds like the Gunboat (a larger frame canoe style knife set up like a Stockman) was probably the first with the current 2 blade 3 5/8 inch version showing up shortly afterwards. The knife was supposedly first made by either Case Brothers or Union Cutlery (later to be known as KaBar) . Soon afterwards W.R. Case & Son began making the Canoe. It is very possible that W.R. Case & Son made the first canoe as we know it today sometime in the 1920s, however Case Brothers and Union also claim to have been making them along side the Gunboat.
      However, one thing is correct, neither pattern caught on very well and pre-WWII versions are very scarce. Apparently the knives went in and out of the their catalogs. After WWII, Case began offering the Canoe, exclusively in stag and it slowly established a foothold among users. By the Union was KaBar and no longer offered a Gunboat or Canoe and Case Brothers had been bought by W. R. Case & Sons. This may explain why you occasionally see Gunboats offered by Case these days.
      I guess in some ways the canoe is the little knife that just didn't give up and finally established a small but loyal following.

      @jjcahill8934 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your enlightening research! The Canoe is certainly a tenacious pattern that finally excelled. I'm glad Case kept the pattern going for so long as it's quite an excellent one! Thanks again!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias

      Nice equal end pattern. The upturn blade provide a good grip and cover the blade spine when folded. It’s a nice size for the pocket and it like spear blades. They are just a good blade shape for most daily chores.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Old Southwest is still available at SMKW, so probably elsewhere as well. I will warn you that it seems there were production issues with the knife. It seems the snap on the small blade is very weak and the enamel is prone to chipping. Most of the other canoes are long out of production and hard to find.

      I know where you’re coming from. Once you start using the knife for any length of time the etch will be ruined. So what’s the point. It seems there are better place to adorn decoration than the working surface. This is especially true of ornate blade etches. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on blade etches.

    These knives are kinda cool I guess. I love USA made knives and own quite a few,....and everytime i pick up a made in China RR at my SMKW knife outlet,....I'm floored at how cheaply made they are. The fit and finish is absolutely atrocious. The materials are beyond cheap. They blatantlylie about "nickel silver" bolsters. They are terrible bang for buck. You'd be way better off saving up your money and buying a knife you can hand down to the next generation in your family and that will last with great craftsmanship. Like a Case XXX, or a nice Barlow. Just my opinion,....and you know what they say about opinions.
