    Thank you Tobias for the great ideas as I trying to ease myself away from Rough Rider for awhile, always good to try something different .

    Just picked up thee black stag bone Marbles knives, the fit and finish is about as good as some of the modern CASE stuff I've looked at. The blades were mostly sharp upon arrival, a few minutes with a strop made things just the way I like it. Got them from SMKW and the pricing was quite friendly; try the canoe, it was the best of the lot and its probably my favorite patterns. I'd be happier if they made a peanut or even a copperhead in the same material, but what I got is still quite nice. Very good quality in every way.

    Not an expensive knife guy at all. Tried out a couple of the Shrade Imperials and if I can get it to resharpen it would be a sturdy OK knife, no frills, nasty plastic scales but solid and pretty well put together.

    Yeah would like to see that #5 brand video! Though not really an EDC and not an American traditional per say I would definitely think an Opinel SS in on my #5 list.. on a hike with a picnic these are wonderful for food prep.. factory edge is razor sharp easy to resharpen and I don't feel I have to "on the spot" afterwards clean it like I would my Swiss Army which is always in the pocket on hikes.. saying Swiss Army? Honestly other then collecting the 58mm is just a tad small IMO for most real tasks? I have come to find the 84mm a lot better then I had previously thought though after getting my Swiss "Walker", yes pretty minimal but on a "non-outback hike a nice compromise and you don't notice in your pocket like my 91mm Tinker or my Farmer.. may have to give the "small Tinker" a try, any thoughts? Love the channel keep up the fine work!!

    Aside from the manufacturers you mentioned, there are some great knives to be had second hand. I have had some good bargains from eBay but some of the best buys have been flea markets.
    At one local to me a couple of years back a guy had a dozen or so SAKs, I bought a Climber for €4.00 then I wished I had bought more. I went back the next week on the off chance the seller would be there again, he was, I bought 5 more from him all different models,the guy was so happy I was taking them off his hands, I got them for €20.00. A couple were a bit knocked about but they were all good knives and I still use them.

    What is the titanium coating for? does it strengthen the blade?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They claim it adds strength and improves the edge. I don't buy that. I do think it is a rust inhibitor, however.

    Good video, Tobias. I read those jokes to my wife, and she said “stop, that’s painful!” 😀 we like the groaners. Yep think I’ll get another Rough Rider or two, maybe another Frost locking copperhead, and definitely a SAK or two.

  • @slick_slicers
    @slick_slicers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some great choices there. I really like the Böker Juliet. I’ve a few Böker Plus knives too. Obviously, I’ve a pile of both Rough Riders and SAKs too. I’ve no Kershaws, but I do like their new ‘Grandmother’ Barlow, the Culpepper.

    I have one folding knife that was more than $50 when I bought it.
    My Buck 110 is more than that new I think when my parents bought one for my 21st birthday it was probably $35 to $40.
    My Buck knives I use for processing deer where over $50 but they are fixed blades. I have one I gave my nephew when he got his first deer last year
    I have one fixed blade Chinese fake Buck I got off of eBay on purpose to see how good it would be. Seems just fine to me.

    Hi Tobias, great brands and a few of them I have not explored before. I have a question about the Shields. I noticed that the Black handled Marbles knife has the same shield as a Rough rider trapper that I have, is there a significance to the shields shape and the fact that it appears on different brands. Good video, thanks. :-)

    Hi. I realy like that Marbles wrench. SDs cost around 25usd here and i am only a couple of hours by road from Switzerland. Crazy, right? If i made the same list i would have to add instead of the SMKW knives, Ganzo and of course Opinel. All the best.

  • @blueeyeswhitedragon9839

    This is just my quirky nature, but on all my pocket knives, I ask one question, "Can it prepare tinder & help with fire making?"
    I know that for most city dwellers, a pocket knife is most often used to open packages and cut cardboard, but my mental test for a knife is:- if stuck in the woods or roadside overnight, will my pocket knife and pocket lighter get me through the night with a nice, comforting, warming, signal fire?
    Most $25 knives can't be trusted to do this safely.
    (If interested, ask me why this is important to me.)

    Another useful and well thought out video, Tobias.
    Some thoughts: - I also still recommend Victorinox, but would stress to people to buy only their thin, basic models, in which the bang-for-buck ratio is still great. (Don't go thicker than the -pioneer- spartan, tinker, climber, camper. As you've said, their more specialized, more thought after models can get quite expensive, and also a bit bulky.
    - Also, if one wanted to have one of their more expensive models, they might consider buying it used on ebay for way less because
    - *they clean up so easily:* Good soaking with soap, your standard houshold oil, any old method of sharpening really. If the scales are scuffed, no worries, get a dollar store brass brush, put a nice brushed finish on the scales; easy-peasy to do for almost everybody.
    - The only super low budget knife I'm considering right now is the Sanrenmu 7007, which is the OEM version/copy of the CRKT drifter. That's because I can easily have it in black g10, black coated (humid climate) and with serrations (which I like on a basic, do everything, worry-not-beater)

    I’ve got Rough Ryder knives that actually rival some of my Case knives for fit, finish AND sharpness right out of the box. As for Marbles, I might like them more if they weren’t so obnoxious about branding their knives as much as they do with all their blade etchings, etc..
