    The 9F is a fine example of British Steam locomotive. It has NOTHING to be ashamed of here. Brute strength has always been the Big Boy's wheelhouse. The 9F is a big and fast locomotive in it's own right. And also very beautiful. But me being American, I have to go with the mighty Big Boy.

    The Big Boys may be the most powerful steam engines still in existence, but the Big Boys are not the most powerful steam engine ever made.
    The Norfolk and Western Y6B Mallet were the most powerful, beating out Big Boy by a fair margin.
    Sadly though, no Y6B’s made it into preservation.

      Once again not true

    • @rucarnuts13
      @rucarnuts13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Seb Sheehan - You’ve said that. Problem is, that any research I’ve done on the Z-Class steam locomotives have yielded that they only ever had a tractive effort of under 100,000 lbs.
      So, prove me wrong.
      The N&W Y6B’s, operating in simple expansion mode, had a tractive effort of 170,000 lbs.

    • @backofthecountervinyl5295
      @backofthecountervinyl5295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah but that is only reserve when pulling it's max gross weight that is the power it then doesn't feed through a prop shaft to the coach / tender. However without pulling any weight it is one of the most powerful trains

    • @rucarnuts13
      @rucarnuts13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Seb Sheehan - I don’t deal in reserves. I deal in pulling power at the coupler. Tractive effort is the main statistic that determines power. How much tonnage can it pull at it’s coupler in the real world, as it were.
      In terms of horsepower, technically the Pennsylvania Q2 was the most powerful steam locomotive ever built at 8,000 horsepower. But power vastly overcame their tractive effort, resulting in them not even being considered for the most powerful steam locomotive by many.
      And as far as tractive effort is concerned, the unit of measurement nearly every railwayman uses to determine pulling power, the Norfolk and Western’s Y6B were the most powerful at 170,000 lbs.

  • @Ghostwalker2061

    There is a debate between whether or not the Big Boys were the strongest, but they are in fact the heaviest of all steam engines. If you could do a strength competition between Norfolk and Western's Y6B 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake locomotives, the Chesapeake and Ohio 2-6-6-6 Allegheny locomotives, and the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boys...you'll see a difference in strength power. I think the tractive effort of the Chesapeake is much greater than the Allegheny and the Big Boy.

    • @retrokingranch
      @retrokingranch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the Big Boy's main point was to haul heavy freight trains at HIGH speeds. The Big Boy is literally the only articulated locomotive who's top speed was 80mph. All the others (Alleghenies, DM&IR, SP AC9's, Y6 Class, etc) topped out at less than 55mph.

    • @Ghostwalker2061
      @Ghostwalker2061 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrokingranch That is true. 80 miles pulling 5 miles of freight...just huge. And now we need 4 different diesels to pull that much that the 4000 series can pull with one engine.

      @retrokingranch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ghostwalker2061
      Yup. There is still no diesel locomotive that has more horsepower than a Big Boy except for only one and it's the largest one ever built, the Centennial (EMD DDA40X). Big Boy does 6,290 horsepower, and the DDA40X did 6,600. But the DDA40X didn't have more horsepower than the strongest steam locomotive ever built, which was the PRR Q2. The Q2 did 7,900 horsepower.

    The strongest (and actually successful locomotives) in the USA were the C&O Alleghenys and Virginian Blue Ridges. They could pull just a bit more than the UP Big Boy (originally named Wasatch.) unfortunately train simulator doesn’t have the C&O or Virginian giants in the game yet. Also one last note, all steam engines in America are referred to as ‘she’. I blame the person who gave the Wasatch classes the nickname that most call them nowadays.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147

      Blackbird Gaming and yet, both of the locomotives you listed, neither were preserved at all and all were cut up. The two I listed were ones I knew still had survivors that could be or are being restored. If the Q2 or Y6B we’re that great, where are they?

      James the Void Knight Just because something was so great doesn’t mean it would be preserved. That’s a silly idea. Additionally, neither the Y6 or the Allegheny could be brought back to life. Both are far too big and don’t go fast enough for excursion service. In the case of the Allegheny specifically, there’s a reason Lima was sued over their weight and lost.

    What if this was a handicap race? Locomotives gain their adhesion at least partly through weight. The 9F would be about a quarter of the weight of the Big Boy- proportionally you've got her pulling roughly twice the load.

    "Strongest in Steam"
    A UP Big Boy named Micha arrives on Sodor on loan. Murdoch feels threatened with Micha around and so tries to haul as much as Micha does, but damages himself in the process. Micha comes in to help, only to reveal that he is a gentle giant like Murdoch is

    well i’m sorry to say that this race isn’t fair at all because train simulator doesn’t calculate physics for the AI trains so the locomotive who can go the fastest without any cars / trucks will always win no matter how many cars / trucks it has to pull.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do agree with you on the physics part but it all comes down to how much time and effort they put into creating the game,trains,and everything else so if you say it wasn't fair ask them about it and get over it or do some damn research on the trains

    The U.P. Big Boy was designed to pull 100+ car trains over the steepest standard gauge grade in the world, Sherman Hill, at high speed and with high power, of course the 4-8-8-4 was gonna win the strength test. It's the largest steam locomotive in the world, they were designed to take sharp curves at 60+ mph and keep going, you'd have to get him over 100 mph before he would start to tip on the curves.
