he seems to be a really interesting dude. and in contrast to a lot of (otherwise great) musicians he's able to eloquently talk about what he does/thinks
Same here man. I really related to what he said about having no one listen to his music. I've made six homemade demo/albums in the past two to three years or so. Basically no one has heard them, yet there was this urge in me to create them. It's almost like it wasn't a matter of choice; it just had to get out of my system. lol having people listen to your music is always a plus though...
"How do I get these almonds without getting up" is the most relatable thing ever lmaoo there have been way to many times where there's something I want or need to get but I don't want to get up to get it
That particular quote is the difference between being a Nihilist and being an Absurdist. Josh is clearly an Absurdist, but he also clearly struggles sometimes with the meaninglessness of existence as all Absurdists must do at some point. As someone once said though, the strongest souls will always find the will to survive. Josh is no different.
Interesting to see how JT's honed the character since then; the self-satirizing over-emoting is just a rookie way to sneak some self-protection on the stage, like "Well if you think this sucks it's not as though I was really *trying*". He knows the character he's playing much better these days and he's more still/ solid/ in control onstage. Feels less like watching a precocious-but-dorky college kid singing, now. Cool. I remember seeing the lead guy from Foxygen jumping around so much onstage, a couple of years back, that he wasn't even singing... and then nearly same with the Foxygen's drummer's spinoff (Diane Coffee) early last year. FJM is the first to graduate to being a serious act in which all the elements align... like some vintage world class Bowie or Elton John; even the singing is more precise and effective, now. The first real *Musical Triumph of Art Over Hype* of the late 2010s...?
Misty knows how to create an illusion of himself that people will eat up. But in reality he's probably a plain jane. And the fact he's able to fool so many makes him a genius.
+Hanna Laurence I feel like this is just a fan trying to justify his doucheyness. I love his music, but lets not kid ourselves, the guy is super pretentious, you can claim its an "illusion" all you want, but the illusion is very real.
You guys gave no context to him sitting in the tree. He took LSD and that trip made him change into father john misty and forever changed the way he writes songs.
This is probably my favourite clip of Josh, he seems genuinely happy here
Father John Misty pizza:
Whiskey
Cigarettes
Crushing existential dread
Misguided decisions from the past that haunt you forever
LOVE HIM---his interviews are the craziest thing.. hes so spun!
I'm just throwing this out there: If Misty said to drink the kool-aid, I'm drinking the kool-aid.

Is there anyway to find the concert footage used in this interview? it looks like a damn good show....

The song is "This Is Sally Hatchet"
Totally. I saw him recently and thought the same thing
Why does he look like if Dennis, Mac, and Charlie were one person? Not a criticism.
It’s the implication
The song is called This is Sally hatchet :D
0:30 to 0:51 has motivated me beyond what he has ever intended

does anyone know the name of the song they're playing at 2:58?

They didn't shoot the whole show, just a few parts here and there. The show was great but the interview was even more interesting.
what show is this!? i've been trying to find it but i can't. is this the only footage from this performance?

Let's just say he's fooled himself as well
+Hanna Laurence agreed.
He's an intelligent guy though, and funny as well as being a good song writer. Couldn't you say that everyone's a plain jane?
I don't think he is pretentious, I think he's actually very real and down to earth, far less pretentious than a lot of people.
Anyone know what kind of cigarettes he smokes?
Tyler Webber American Spirits the yellow pack lmaooo only 7 years late
I wonder if he would consider teaching a class on the philosophy of pizza...
i can see some jim morrison in his actions
spilling almonds. classic.
fewest moving parts? Are you a david bazan fan mr. misty? GOOD. WE SHARE SOMETHING IN COMMON.
That is exactly where my mind went to when I heard him say that.
8 years later, but they were friends and tourmates in 06-07, and tillman sang background vocals on "harmless sparks"
Did FJM predict the pizza trend of '14?
I miss j Tillman
aha yeah i lol'd
I think maybe that listening to this guy talk was a mistake. But I sure love his music.
You guys gave no context to him sitting in the tree. He took LSD and that trip made him change into father john misty and forever changed the way he writes songs.
He loves pizza!
The interviewer never even said a word.
i cant even watch this because the music is to distracting

+joshjohnson exactly! it's funny how people 'change' when actually we probably never knew them to begin with. quite scary.
Cocaine's a helluva drug
