    To be fair some people DO need one, if you have a gap, severe open bite, or severe lower crowding can all cause you to need one. But for most people it’s because we think you’re too lazy to wear your retainer 😅 SO WEAR IT OK! ❤

      Me too. If you were a minor and they just looked at you and treated you like a kid, they'll assume your best interests and make that decision for you. The real curse was those damned Hawley retainers I'd fidget with and that constantly breaks. Now I don't bother with a retainer for my top teeth anymore but I still have the bonded one over a decade later. Some studies show that these bonded retainers help keep the upper teeth straight by ensuring the bottom doesn't shift and put forces on the upper ones causing the shift. Later, I had a phase where I hated my lower retainer and wanted it off but then they'd make me a lower one and I told them with a straight face that I wouldn't wear it so my options were to remove it and have nothing or keep it but since the roots of my lower incisors resorbed and they aren't strong enough on their own, and the bonded retainer acts like a splint that strengthens the teeth. I notice very quickly when it breaks as I feel my teeth wiggle and the texture on my tongue. Nowadays unless it's physically attached to me, don't even bother because I won't wear it.

It is 2023, with current advances there is zero reason to be in pain in the chair (aside from severe infection which makes numbing nearly impossible but even then we can give you sleepy juice or happy gas or straight up sedation lol). A good dentist will take the time and care to be methodical and gentle and will educate and require all of his staff to do the same. 🥰

      I've had mine for over a decade. It broke a few times and I had a phase where I wanted it off but then I'd have to wear a removable one and I told them with a straight face to not bother making one because I won't wear it. I fidget too much and the removable one I had on the top would break every 4 months or so. Permanent ones can be reattached easily. These retainers are stronger than braces and floss threaders and water flossers help tremendously! People generally just suck at flossing, and I used to be guilty of this.
      The other reason I have one on my lower incisors is due to root resorption and my teeth aren't very strong on their own so I notice rather swiftly when some of the bonding breaks because my tooth has movement and there's a notable difference in texture. My tongue playing with the part acts as a constant reminder to get it fixed.

    • @4NeonFun
      @4NeonFun ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An interesting thing is that I haven't worn my top retainer for several years since it was a Hawley retainer that continuously breaks and I stopped bothering with it when the insurance refused to cover it. My teeth barely shifted, in fact that shifting was basically the teeth settling into their positions. Studies have shown that the forces your bottom teeth exert on the top ones can cause them to shift and since the lower incisors have smaller roots, they are the most likely to shift. The study also shows that as long as your bottom teeth are in the proper positions, it will help retain the positions of their corresponding teeth (upper & lower).

    I was given a permanent and plastic one. At some point in the 3 weeks between getting my braces off and my biannual dentist appointment… the permanent one broke. My dentist pointed it out to me and showed me what a broken one looked like. It was behind my two top front teeth so I couldn’t see it without using a mirror. I called my ortho and got an appointment for a couple days later to fix it (wearing my retainer full time as I was supposed to) and they SCOLDED ME for not coming in when it first broke. I said I don’t know what they expected me to do. It wasn’t obviously broken (the bond came partially off the back on one tooth). In order to see it was broken… I would literally have to be poking around and looking for it with dentistry tools which normal people don’t do. And I called them the day I found out it was broken. The lady also scolded me because my teeth were still crooked (I was an early deband) and she said she could see I wasn’t wearing my retainer and that my teeth have moved so much that they can’t be fixed without braces again. I told her I’d been wearing it religiously and she called me a liar. Then she pulled up the pictures that were taken of my mouth the day I got them removed and realized I was telling the truth. I was super embarrassed because there were other chairs in the room and the other patients could see and hear her scolding me

    I love my permanent retainer. I was a bad patient. I haven't worn my upper removable retainer in many years and probably need a slight adjustment to my uppers unfortunately. I'm sure they have shifted. I don't know where my retainer is. My bottom teeth have the permanent retainer. The same one has been in place for about 13 years and never broke. I floss and have not have problems. My bottom teeth were worse than the top so I'm thankful for the permanent retainer and that it has prevented my bottom teeth from shifting.

    I got my braces off, got a removable retainer, wore it religiously, and within a month my teeth had bent my retainer out of shape and were almost back in their original positions. I went back, got lower braces on for another few months, and then got a permanent retainer attached for about 4.5 years. One day it detached from one of my teeth, and when I went to the orthodontist, they let me just get it taken off and I got another removable one. Tell her to get floss threaders and a waterpik. It works wonders! If you fidget a lot or have resorbed roots like me, bonded retainers are magnitudes better. 90 seconds of flossing with threaders is way better than having an expensive and equally delicate fidgit in your mouth all day.
      It's completely up to you, you know you best. If you don't lose things often and don't fidgit a lot and have trouble flossing still, a clear removable retainers are best (make sure you clean it when you brush your teeth)
      Whatever you do don't get a Hawley retainer (the ones made of acrylic and metal wires) mark my words if you thought bonded retainers break a lot have never dealt with Hawleys as those things are the devil's incarnate and straight up evil!

    In regular almost every patient decided for Retainers bc you don't have to worry that your front teeth move. Ususally we do both, removable Retainer AND fixed ones
    You CAN floss them ofc if the doctor is not stupid and puts the fixed Retainets TOO LOW. Just use floss with a thicker mid section and waxed beginning and then fiddle the floss between your teeth😌
