I've had cystic acne along my chin and just under my nose that didn't clear up (almost) completely until menopause. I was looking through some old pictures recently and realized I've had the same exact same zit showing up in the same exact place in various states of inflammation ... FOR YEARS. I think whenever I did squeeze it - I did exercise some restraint over the years- it pushed some of that sebum gunk down deeper into the follicle, and that's what kept resurfacing every few months. Upon this realization, instead of squeezing, I doused it with salicylic acid a couple times a day for 2-3 months until the bump finally receded. Finally it's healed for good. Longest zit ever.
I've been trying to convince my husband that he needs to stop messing with his skin. When he was a teenager, his mother taught him how to "care for" his acne prone skin, by lancing or popping the zit, then following up with hydrogen peroxide. Since his mother was the one who taught him this, and because he's been doing it this long, nothing I say will convince him that he's actually harming his skin. I swear, it's like an obsession with him. When I have a zit, he desperately tries to convince me to pop it. It's like it physically pains him to see a zit that is unmaimed. And yes, if you're wondering, he has many acne scars.
I had also been trying to get him to stop splashing hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol on everything. We have clean, running water and soap. But I've given up on that one. I figure it isn't ideal, but at least he isn't really harming anything with that.

As a woman with autism, here's some things that help me not pick at my skin: • Calm Strips (the originals, Google it) • Scratch tickets (I get the cheapest ones) • Fidget rings (getting my own, I tried my friend's ring) I also suggest a picking toy, like a picking rock.

My skin is in ROUGH shape. I had a long depressive episode during the pandemic where I didn't care for myself, especially my skin and diet. My skin got so bad I still have scars all around the outside of my face from it. I'm trying to take better care of it now, and this video is just what I needed. I actually got recommended by the pharmacist to get a moisturiser because I had patchy pieces of dry skin on my cheeks and they reached all the way to just the outside of my eyes. And the first time I put it on... it BURNED! LIKE HELL!! It just hurt so much that I had to take it off right away. Then I tried again later after a shower and I realised that the moisteriser I got worked better if I put it on damp skin rather than when I was dry and it worked and the redness and soreness reduced. Prior to this I had no skincare products.

We asked what products I should use and since my skin was suuuuper oily bc I used moisturizer daily on my whole face he told me to not use it. At all. He said that if I absolutely had to use it I should use the one I have today, and I use it every day but in smaller quantities because otherwise it would be all oily again. Super great advise for the oily people
A great tip that ive found out from personal experience is to put moisturizer on your whole face at night before going to sleep. When I do that, my skin is usually much less dry right after I wash my face. That way I don't have to put on moisturizer during the day, making my face more oily. As with everything, CONSISTENCY IS KEY!! Ofc, this may not work for you, but it wouldn't hurt to try! Also does ANYONE have any sunscreen recommendations for people that hate putting anything on their face? It's weird, need my skin to feel perfectly freshly washed all the time or it bothers me, and putting any sunscreen or moisturizer on top of it after washing my face feels awful. That's why I figured out that putting moisturizer on at night worked lol, cause if I did it before bed, I wouldn't have to feel it when I slept 😅

"7. Keeping small cuts and wounds covered" - this is confusing: all the other titles are phrased to be the "bad" thing, and this one sounds like it's the reverse?
If the wound isn't serious, you shouldn't cover it. My family is full of doctors and they always repeat "you are going to 'parboil' the wound. If it isn't serious, too exposed, or you can keep it clean, don't cover it." The healing process is faster since you are letting your skin "breathe" (what is explained in the video is quite accurate).
I made the mistake of treating my skin as if it’s “not sensitive” just bc I never felt much irritation but I think we should all treat our skin gently no matter what our skin type is
Thanks bro, you actually opened my eyes with the moisturizer one, because I have very oily skin usually and to stop this, I put moisturizer on once every 2 days but now I will put everyday. Thanks again
The way “covering wounds” is listed is a bit confusing and, until you elaborate, suggests that it’s bad to do. I think you meant to have the pop up text say “not covering wounds” in line with it being a list of negatives. If that makes sense... I’m just worried people will miss some of your explanation and come away with the opposite message, especially since it’s such a pervasive myth that wounds need to “breathe”
@@Lilian040210 oh, yes, you still need to change your bandages, especially if it gets wet or sweaty. @@rebeccahicks2392 well when I had about 17 different wounds that probably needed about 10 stitches each. I would cover them and they took twice as long to heal and would leave the wound green after I took off the bandaid. To me,it looked as if moisture built up causing it to basically stay fresh instead of close up. But this is with wounds that were 2 inches long by an inch wide. Which I doubt anyone covering a wound is covering a wound that big. But with bandaids they became far more itchy and would burn but letting it scab up was way better in that case. The scab would take a day to form and protected me a lot more then the bandaids ever did. Plus a lot of extra expense of bandaids when they made it worse. It was good for the first week but after that it would just prolong the healing.
Ad minor wounds: my dad (also a doctor) always taught a rule “wet on wet”. If you have a “wet” wound, drying is not the right treatment. Try ointment, cream, something “wet” instead. It is easy to remember.
I'm 45 and have never used moisturizers or lotion because I'm usually allergic to stuff that is in them and I look 30 but I also have never worn makeup like foundation and I only clean my face with soap and water not all those fancy scrubs and stuff!
Tip for scar tissue care: I recently had surgery on my finger. Once cleared, I used Vitamin E oil (got the capsules since the pure oil is very expensive) and used one capsule per pay to massage the scar tissue. It has healed so much faster and the scar is barely visible now 2 1/2 months post-surgery...
Cool but... how can you tell this was helped by the oil and that it would not have healed the same way if you had left if alone? I am not dissing your recommendation, it may be actually perfect but I am curious because I have a few surgery scars and what mattered was mostly where it was and not so much what I did... If this works, that would be fantastic tho.

I’m the same way... it’s a bad habit!! Especially since I’ve been at home so much over the past year I don’t even think about it & there’s no one to keep me in check!
I’ve actually never heard the advice that you should get your skin checked regularly if you’ve had many sunburns in the past. I don’t have a single mole on my body and don’t have any family history so I’ve never been too worried about skin cancer, but I have gotten dozens of sunburns in my life (thank you Scandinavian genes). Guess I’ll be keeping an eye out now
Thank you for the hot water thing. As someone who has eczema, this will be very useful for my skin. What’s really weird is that sensitive skin runs in my family on both sides, but my brother and sister aren’t affected by it, and it all had to come to me.
I don't have eczema, but I can get pretty dry skin. Now that I know this, any time my husband teases me for my "cold" showers, I can tell him it's for my skin. And by the way, I don't take cold showers. I just don't try to boil my skin off, like he does.
I just recently started taking skincare seriously and love learning about the benefits of things like SPF, retinol and hydrating acids like hyaluronic and salicylic acids. However, having KP makes it so hard not to always be picking at my skin, or nicking it when shaving even when hardly applying pressure 🙈🙈
I can't even count the number of times my pts have uncovered their fresh sutures to "let them dry" and developed infections. We've even had to re-open a wound, cut the infected tissue out and then suture it back up again. We do sometimes use hydrogen peroxide though. But only on wounds we can't properly clean. Like punctures with lots of dirt trapped inside.
I don't have OCD - at least to my knowledge - but I literally can't stop doing this. I've tried countless time. I constantly touch my skin looking for uneven spots to insist on... If I try to stop, at a certain point I will switch to touching my hair. I often do this stuff even in public, quite a disgusting show...
I just clean my wounds by pouring vodka on them. I'm not a barbarian tho, so I make sure to collect it in a glass for later, as there's no need to waste good alcohol.
its so hard not to pick skin, as someone with OCD. despite most people associating OCD with the "movie trope" of keeping things in straight lines, that's not a common form of it. its obsessive compulsive behaviors without reason - this includes nailbiting, strict adhering to a self-set schedule that causes GREAT STRESS if broken, ect. as a result i'm largely declawed because its SO difficult for me to get my nails to grow. five minutes of not paying attention can remove months of effort and nothing really seems to help. It sucks :/ I envy those that take pleasure in fidget toys and the like as those ARE one of those things that can reduce the behavior in some people ( as its essentially as doc here says, keeping the hands busy )
Love that a clip of James Welsh proving that certain skin care trends are harmful was put in this vid 😄 He is one of the best informing about proper skincare.
Wow, I recently cut my hand at work, and from personal experience and advice from the dr, I was covering it every day to keep it from drying out or getting infected, but when I went for a follow up, the nurse told me to let it scab over. I didn't really listen to her because I work in a warehouse and didn't want dirt or dust to get into the wound. It definitely reduced the look af the scar. There's just a small line on my hand now. It's weird that different medical professionals tell you different things.
Wait this confused me : All of the title cards were things you shouldn't do, right? But then at 2:50 it says "Keeping cuts and wounds covered," but Doctor Mike says "Keeping it covered and allowing it to stay moist has been shown to heal better"? What am I missing?
Thank you for the one about hydrogen peroxide. I have been cleaning wounds with it, sometimes even rubbing alcohol, and I didn't know it came with risks. I'll be sure to use running water next time! Thank you, doc!
Alcohol is one of those things that works, but should be avodied if possible. If you are injured and don't have access to soap though, it'll do the trick. Just don't make a habit of it.

He said that if I absolutely had to use it I should use the one I have today, and I use it every day but in smaller quantities because otherwise it would be all oily again. A great tip that ive found out from personal experience is to put moisturizer on your whole face at night before going to sleep. I don't have eczema, but I can get pretty dry skin. Now that I know this, any time my husband teases me for my "cold" showers, I can tell him it's for my skin.
And by the way, I don't take cold showers. I just don't try to boil my skin off, like he does.
*Dr. Mike:* "Now for long hot showers... "
*My Brother:* **Gives me THE look**
I'm confused:/
@@briannadale8532 they mean that they themselves take long hot showers

@bowlcut the stereotype is that people in alabama tend to go after siblings
Thank you for saying all these ‘moisture wicking ‘ non cotton materials absorb body oils and smell! They do!!!
"Starring at our cell phones while our necks are bent all the time isn't doing us any favors."
I feel attacked lol...
innit, I didn't click on the video to be roasted like that 😳

I have good posture despite being on my phone all the time. Haha.

i love that he gets to the point right away
That's underrated...
I fell your pain
KP?
I can't even count the number of times my pts have uncovered their fresh sutures to "let them dry" and developed infections. We've even had to re-open a wound, cut the infected tissue out and then suture it back up again. We do sometimes use hydrogen peroxide though. But only on wounds we can't properly clean. Like punctures with lots of dirt trapped inside.
mike: stop picking at your skin

Did your doctor recommend any fidget toys? They're amazing!!
🤣🤣
Me too
Ummm no?
its so hard not to pick skin, as someone with OCD. despite most people associating OCD with the "movie trope" of keeping things in straight lines, that's not a common form of it. its obsessive compulsive behaviors without reason - this includes nailbiting, strict adhering to a self-set schedule that causes GREAT STRESS if broken, ect. as a result i'm largely declawed because its SO difficult for me to get my nails to grow. five minutes of not paying attention can remove months of effort and nothing really seems to help.
What am I missing?
good catch
Yeah I’m confused
Yeah I was confused at that too 😅
Same!

Can you do a video where your subscribers comment their skincare routines and you react to them (what's good, bad ect.)?
thats such a good idea
Dr. Mike posting is the best part of my sunday!
I would always pick at pimples until they were fully popped and they would then bleed, scab over and heal up with 0 scars
Same here. The reason it works so well is because when you bring the blood/clear fluid to the top it forces the bacteria out.
@@CheyD33 the clear fluid your talking about is probably a mix of white blood cells and bacteria
As a middle aged woman that never thought i had pimple popping scars, just wait - all those little scars/"dimples" will start showing with age😝

@@etherraichu and alcohol stings when you put it on a cut, too
