My mom just bought one of these used a few months back with the 6 speed manual. She let me drive it and I was quite happy with it. I'm actually working on saving up to buy hers from her so she can hopefully get into an FJ. Coming from the owner of an old 2005 mini cooper, I'm happy to see how much room is in the engine bay, should make it a whole lot easier to work on.
Amazed that Honda still makes cars with real speedometers and tachometers! I drove a 2015 Honda Civic and I really didn't like it's digital speed indicator that was just a number. Great review.
I appreciate your very thorough and (contrary to some other comments) well-balanced reviews. I'm researching to purchase a new SUV and found this and others to be invaluable. Thanks!
Great review. We have used a Kia Rondo for several years and am now looking to move to something smaller but with SUV seating and storage. This looks like a great option.
We owned a 2016 HRV EX AWD and it was quite reliable and roomy. After owning it for about 6 years, we just grew tired of the lethargic engine, spartan interior and loud road noise on the interstate.
I own a 2003 Honda CRV. As I'm looking to potentially get a new car I'm definitely leaning towards either the fit or the HRV. Luckily your videos are descriptive enough that I can make an accurate decision and get a sense of what each of them are like.
creations landscape designs Absolutely go with the Fit. It is just as practical, but is much more fun to drive, especially with the manual transmission, and super simple to park. I love going through curves and roundabouts.
Yeah it would be perfect! looking at this vehicle for my mom. I have the 2014 civic and was thinking if only it didn't use the same engine because with awd and extra weight the 1.8 is weak even for her.
My mom bought this car for our family, and I was the main driver for about a year until she got her license. It's a modern, smaller SUV with all the little details you'd be looking for. Good fuel economy for an SUV, and generally reliable. Seats 5, but then again Honda specializes in smaller compact cars like sedans and hatchbacks. Even though I've had good experiences with the HRV, I'd prefer a Civic any day of the week.
Awesome review! I love the fact that you subtly mention the lack of offered features here in america, Vs it's overseas big brother counterpart the Honda Vezel (Panaramic Sunroof, Rear Arm Rest, 1.6L i-DTEC Diesel 75mpg engine/ 1.5L i-VTEC gasoline 50mpg engine, Jewel. LED DRL/headlights, Rear LED Tube/bar headlights, 2 rear map pockets, power outlet in the trunk, more interactive imid display, Rear map lights with Blue accent/courtesy light in the center, blue accent lighting for the interior ceiling, just to name a few....). I feel like America will never truly experience the magic of honda, if they just have us the "OPTION" to add these features, just the option, I'd appreciate that. I want to enjoy what the rest of the world gets to enjoy (UK, EU, JDM, China, Philippines, bassically, the rest of the world except the continent of North/South America (US, Canada, South Americas). Makes me wonder, why is that??? if all else fails, I hope that America Honda Co. upgrades the engine to a R20 motor (iLX 2.0L engine), at the least. Great review, nice clothes, well spoken. I could listen to you all day. You've got great features, hit the gym and flatten out that chest (I'm in the same boat fyi, just lacking motivation).
tahjo7 they might add those features to the higher level trims, or add more trims if the car sells well. It's only been out for about a year, so hopefully we see some of those features, especially if the HRV sells well.
I have a 2016 hrv. Within the past week I had a brake light start strobing on me. Went to the dealer to make sure it was the light. They told me it was and they would be happy to replace it for $600. I politely told them to go to hell. Turns out the brake light is an LED so you cannot replace the bulb you have to replace the whole housing. Now get this, here in florida all the dealerships are owned by one corporation that runs a monopoly on the state. They write the lemon laws and they have a choke hold over advance auto parts and autozone. I went to both advanced auto parts and autozone and they both have a note in their system that says that they do not carry the brake light and that i have to go to the dealer. Keep in mind LED technology is supposed to last bare minimum 10 years. Anyways, I was lucky to find the light on amazon for $160. Total horse shit.
Well done. We have a 2005 Rav 4. We love the size of this Rav 4 and think the new one is too big, such a shame because we wanted to stick with Toyota. We will be looking at the 2017 HRV tomorrow. Thanks for the great review.
+teddybear2123 We're thinking Honda didn't use the 2.4L because they wanted to keep it at a price point and give buyers a reason to make the jump to a CR-V. That being said, we'd love to see the 2.4 DI engine and 8-speed dual clutch in an Acura version of this car.
+Redline Reviews I see what you mean. But back in 2010 Acura tsx and TL had same V6 3.5L engine. And TL was better selling car than TSX v6. Even TL was a bit slower compare to tsx v6! Its good to have more engine choices, but this days its all about marketing!
Or an easy upgrade would be the 2.0L R20 that's in the Acura iLX. Its already here in the states, it's in the same family of engines (the R series engine, the hrv has the r18), it's a quick inexpensive fix for the lack of torque. just like they did with the ap1 s2000, they bumped it up to a 2.2L from a 2.0L. Americans need more power, especially since honda doesn't want to give us the 1.6L i-DTEC 70 mpg diesel engine that the hrv/vezel has overseas, that would fix the torque problem. Honda played it safe the first. cycle of hrv's to save money, now that they have feedback it'll be interesting to see if they offer the r20 in the mid cycle refresh. especially since EVERY review says that the hrv is underpowered. Problem is that people outside of the intended demographic like this vehicle, young students bought the Fit with its 1.5L engine. simple car. now they have a heavier hrv meant for college kids and young adults, they figured the minimal power would be ok as in the Fit application, bad assumption Honda, very bad...
Your reviews are great!! Do you have the Subaru Crosstrek in your upcoming reviews? Would love see an in depth review on it. Hopefully other subscribers agree.
Hey Boo ... great review ... I'be been thinking about trading my Fit 2015 EX manual trans for the HR-V, but after watching ur review ... I have decided to keep my Fit for a lil bit longer and see if Honda comes up with a new engine for the HR-V in the near future ... thans for the info .
Cvt transmission in Honda never had any issues. I have driven lots lots of sport auto, dsg, etc. I can’t tell the cvt is worse than any other transmissions. It is a lot better than dsg in terms of reliability wise
It is interesting. I just had my first car a few month ago. which is a used 2009 honda fit. and every people I met that drive my car said to me it feels good. Although I do not really know what good means for each of them. but many of them have drived much more expensive car. so it is interesting to hear everybody said same thing to me.
Are you going to review the 2019 HRV? Please demonstrate the S mode and paddle shifters with eco off this time. Shift at 5-6k rpm's. Thank you. I have no issues speeding into freeways and passing other drivers.
Hello, would love an update of the 2018 model of this. I was thinking of getting this, but your Accord review really pulled me that way, so an update on this would greatly assist my decision. As someone who have only driven sedans and compacts, I was aiming for a SUV or pick-up for a higher profile seating and field of view and thought the cheaper HR-V was perfect, however I'm no longer sure this would be enough power for me, especially with how great the Accord looks. So, it would be great if an update is possible, I plan to make my purchase decision by December.
I remember reading a while back before this car was released that this was supposed to be the first car to come with the a honda turbo. So I wouldn't be surprised if it's refreshed next year, anyone know no well it's doing sale wise in its class?
Wait for Honda America to add the Ohio assembled engine the are using in the Type R Civic. It would make the HR-V the perfect vehicle for me? I think the specs are 290 hp and 300 lb of ft torque! More soundproof would be welcome too!
seems like what I expected, if the interior packagin really is like the fit then its pretty roomy I was so surprised when I first sat in a fit those designers really did a good job. It sounds like it could use a small turbo though.
Very poor decision to not use any knobs for the volume and climate control. During winter you will need to remove your large gloves to change the temperature..
I'm planning to buy my first car.. I need something that is fuel efficiency, good cargo since i'm moving, low monthly and reliable. I'm split with HR-V and 2016 10th gen Honda Civic. Please help me..😬😬
I had the same choice to make and went with the HR-V. There is much more cargo space, almost as fuel efficient as the Civic(if you go with the two wheel drive variant) and the payments are comparable if you stick with the LX and EX models. EX-L model will push the payments to uncomfortable levels if you're on a budget.

Love the vehicle but there is one thing I cannot stand; how Honda took away the volume knob. My friends 2014 Civic has the same touch-screen and I HATE having to use the touch volume 'scroller' and the steering wheel buttons, its just not practical. When you want to turn the volume way up or way down quickly it simply does not work. Please Honda just put a volume knob back in your cars
Your concern about the vehicle are the same as mine, the horrid touch screen for climate control and the volume slider... and the lack of LED running lamps and HID lamps like the Euro models is sad. The same thing with the CR-V.. I am not sure why we keep getting the dumb downed models.

I would consider it if they upgrade the current 1.8 liter with the 2016 Civic's 2.0 liter. Maybe mid-model year update?
they did it

You do actually need to the wheel off a bike to fit it in. I tried. It was too big by like 2 inches, but with wheel off it worked well. 26” wheel btw
this car should have K24 series engine as optional. 1.8L civic engine is not simply enough. Otherwise it looks like pretty good car.

where is the HR-V made, Japan or US?
You should always test the cargo area with a golf bag. That's the best way to gauge the storage size.
Any chance we will see the honda accord sport 2016 anytime soon?
The 2016 Fit is now made in Japan, the 2016 HR-V as far as I know is still made in Mexico.
