    My husband bought me a black 2016 Honda HR-V ex the day after mother's day (also a bday gift) and idk why but I just love this cute ute so much. I have no regrets with this car. I truly recommend it. :)

    I was taking delivery of the Mazda CX-3 yesterday. When I looked @ the car upon delivery, I noticed a 5" scratch that was touched-up with paint. I backed-out of the deal right away. The CX-3 is more fun to drive then the HR-V, but it's nowhere near as practical. I've watched this review @ least 5 times. Went to my local Honda dealer & they had the unit I wanted (Milano Red in EX) I'm taking delivery tomorrow morning! Both cars are great, but the HR-V is the safe bet. Alex (I have the same name BTW) your review steered my in the HR-V direction. I think I'll be happy for the next 5-6 years. Thank you for the detailed review.

    Alex, I think your full-length reviews are very excellent and more detailed than almost any other auto reviewer out there, but you managed to make an almost-as-thorough review in less than half the time you normally take with this car. In my opinion, you managed to cover just about all the noteworthy details of the HR-V and didn't spend any more time than necessary covering each one. I hope you'll consider making more reviews like this one. I'm not saying I don't like your 30-minute reviews or that I think you should abandon them, but this is a good example of when less is more.

      blondejokes495 I know what you're saying, but this review made me tense. It made me feel like Alex had a gun to his head. Generation Twitter has to understand that sometimes more is more.

      blondejokes495You have plenty of "short" review on YT.
      But alexs detailed reviews are excellent and with saabkyle and autogefuhl the best on YT. And thats why it unique and i love it. So hands up for long time reviews!

      RISO1984 Don't get me wrong - I am a huge of fan of Alex's detailed reviews - but the point I was trying to make was that even with the limited time he had this car, he still managed to make what I felt was still a thorough review, almost just like the ones he always does. I know he spoke a little faster than usual and probably skipped a few points he normally covered, but I don't feel like this review was lacking a lot. I'm sure Alex will have his usual review on this car at some point in the future, but for now I'm happy with the video he did on this.

    Amazingly, you didn't mention the Nissan Juke even once, and yet it too has a manual+FWD combo and CVT+AWD combo available, not to mention the fact that it inspired this genre more than any of the other cars you did mention. It even has similar rear doors to the HR-V.

    Great early review. When you have one for a week, please try to review a cloth interior, since these entry level vehicles mostly sell as LX or EX models, not EX-L. I'd also like to hear comments on visibility out the back (criticized by another reviewer), as well as cabin noise. I'm hoping you can do another early review on the Honda Pilot when the info embargo ends on May 20th--really interested to hear what you think of the HR-Vs "Big Brother". Thanks for your consistently excellent reviews!

  • @allennacheman
    @allennacheman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hi Alex
    The one detail about the HR-V that you neglected to mention - and which proved to be a deal breaker for me -- is this: The front passenger seat is unusually low and not height-adjustable. This probably has something to do with the fold-flat feature. In a test drive my wife complained that she was sitting so low to the floor she had to stretch her head up to an uncomfortable level to see out front . So that pretty well scratched the vehicle off our list.

    Hey Alex, just a suggestion, perhaps you could mention in the reviews where the cars are built so we don't have to look it up ourselves. I looked up on Wikipedia and these HRV's are made in Mexico for the US market.

    They are going to sell a metric assload of those. It's everything a buyer wants, at a reasonable price, with a Honda badge. Questions: looks like it's a real pretzel to get to the ports in the Volvo bin. How the hell does the shift linkage work in the manual to get around that bin?

    First, excellent review. You discussed at length the competition between the HR-V and the smaller Honda cars as well as other subcompacts. What do you feel is the competition like between the HR-V and CR-V? What decision points would lead a buyer to select one over the other? Is it strictly related cargo size and price? Thank you!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      colin lenington It's primarily size. The CRV is larger but it is also more powerful, a little more comfortable, etc.

    Excellent review Alex, thanks! It looks like a great car for around town! Will you get to drive the automatic version for comparison of the power? I am very interested to know how much loss in power with the auto, although I know it will get much better gas mileage than the manual! Not like the old days anymore...

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    • @19471919
      @19471919 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos Wow, I would have never guessed that Alex! Hey, old school here, manual transmissions always beat an automatic. How long are these transmissions good for, I know Honda has had some problems/recalls with some other automatic transmissions. Are these transmissions less or more expensive to repair/replace? I currently own 2 Honda accords, a 2000 and 2011...LOVE them! Not sure I could get used to NOT hearing it shift...lol Has Honda completely switched over to these now, I see there is no option now for the traditional automatics any more on certain models!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    I'm coming from a 2004 Saturn Red line Vue, AWD 6 cylinder. I don't mind giving up some cargo space, I rarely used all of that space anyway but I am concerned about acceleration to get on and off the interstate or when needing to get over quickly. I wonder will struggle going from a 6 cyl to a 4 cyl.. thoughts? I recently drove a Chevy Cruze and the acceleration wasn't too bad but then I drove a Ford Fiesta and I thought I was going to die trying to pass people and get on off the the interstate, LOL.. so 4 cyls vary... is this a kill you one or decent one?

    Hi Alex....I personally thinks that this HR-V is following the footsteps of Subaru XV Crosstrek....how would you compare them, especially now that HR-V do have CVT+AWD available, unlike before no car can really compare to Subaru as Subaru has almost all car in AWD?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      Johnny Yu Well, the HR-V has a more efficient 2WD model available, it also has a nicer interior than the Subaru. The XV has an excellent AWD system but I'm not sure there is much cross shop between them.

    Info on road noise and also engine noise (CVT) compared with comparable autos...and even the Fit since you have driven it would be appreciated. I drove the fit...rather noisy.

    • @BrianSmith-kz1tj
      @BrianSmith-kz1tj 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Smith One more item: I've seen conflicting talk about the pairing of phones to the info system. Is the iPhone all that is fully functional with it or also Android. Where is the difference if it the iPhone is only fully functional? Honda promised Andriod support with the Fit and it became vaporware...

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Smith It is quieter than the fit but I wouldn't exactly call it "quiet"

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Smith Define fully functional? As far as the nav portion goes, yes the iPhone is the only phone supported and that's all that there will be until the Android Auto systems come live. Reading between the lines this is all Honda could do without Android Auto, they may have been able to support one or two phones but they said that would have required more development resources and time and it was simply easier to support the iPhone and get a broader portion of the market serviced.

    • @BrianSmith-kz1tj
      @BrianSmith-kz1tj 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex on Autos I think you just defined it - doesn't do everything with an Android that one can do with an iPhone. I am sure you are right about the reason. That said, it bugs people (who bought the Fit) that Honda said Android support by late 2014...and never did. And...apparently will not from what I heard on a forum.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Donsburt I didn't think so. It has more power than the Fit despite not being that much heavier in real terms and it should perform very much like the Civic. It's quite similar to the Encore and Trax.

    I've watched alot of your awd and sh-awd videos and I was wondering what level of awd system is in the HRV? I know it's probably not as advanced as the sh-awd but is it closet to a Quattro-esque system or something different?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Tsiris No, it is essentially the same type of system found in most crossovers like the Escape, CR-V, RAV4, etc

    • @jtsiris86
      @jtsiris86 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. Thanks. Also I've noticed more advanced awd systems tend to get worse fuel efficiency than less intelligent awd systems. Do you think in the near future they would be able to overcome this challenge?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Tsiris There will always be improvement but AWD will always be less efficient than 2WD

    • @jtsiris86
      @jtsiris86 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. Maybe acura should make diesel engines..match them with 7 or 8 speed transmissions...so you can retain fuel efficiency, power, and a smarter awd system...sort of like the VW Touareg diesel with Quattro 20 city /29 hwy

      dennisscipio Surprising but I think its hard to beat the efficiency of of the new ED 2.4. I suspect they will go to the new Civic motor at the mid cycle upgrade for a bump in economy. Hopefully the new 1.5 turbo will have more power too.

    The CRV is not a big SUV and with this vehicle being almost a foot shorter, it is a little smaller than I would want in a compact SUV. It almost looks like a hatchback car. I know looks on videos can be deceiving, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @Lucky8s
      @Lucky8s 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SUV has become a general term that most people use to describe a vehicle that is large, spacious and has AWD. The CR-V is a compact crossover and the Pilot is a midsized crossover as well.

    Hello, I did not lease the Fit due to the badly cushioned seats, and there are many negative reviews online regarding the Fit's cheap seats as well. A friend bought a Fit, and agrees the seats are extremely uncomfortable. So, can you add the seat quality to your review? Also, I have been watching for the Urban SUV Concept, and assume this is the version they decided to come out with, correct?

  • @denault3985

    Interesting review Alex, but there's a few points you didn't mention. First of all the HRV has the smallest engine of the lineup, I'm sure it could not get up the hills in San Francisco where you live. Secondly, it's simply an ugly vehicle but as great engineering (ie Magic Seats, etc).
    Btw, why is the Fiat 500X never mentioned in any reviews?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      denault3985 The 500X was not released when the HR-V was tested. Although it does have a small engine, it had no troubles on steep grades and I have had a limited amount of time in San Francisco with it and had no issues.
