  • Natalie lands her very first steelhead on a fly rod ever! The water on the Clearwater river was really high and muddy, but we still managed to land a lot of steelhead on this two-day trip.

    I’ve been guilty of the same practices, but please try to keep them wet, especially the wild fish. Our counts are dropping and we really need to be conscious of this fishery so our kids can enjoy these fish too. Sorry if I come off as a know it all, bot my intent. But if you’re familiar with the Clearwater and fish it a bunch, you know what I’m saying. I wish they’d just close the spring season. Catch one on a swing dry fly if you want a fight. Graduate from bobber fishing.

      With it being her first time steelhead fishing with a fly rod. I put pretty heavy tippet on for her. She is use to reefing in salmon with a much more stout set up.. the murky water helped so I could cheat it and go heavy.

    Boy, you guys had some fantastic steelhead fishing! It looks like nice weather, is it in April? I was surprised that first there was no one else visible and secondly many of the fish you caught were in that little side channel. Did you know they were in there, maybe on redds, from prior trips?

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, it was April. The season ends in April for the south fork of the Clearwater. I've fished that place for years and know exactly what time of year and what the river flows should be. It is close to reds too and that is just one spots they like to stack up with the right conditions. And I always go during the week! It's pretty busy Friday and Saturday. Thanks for watching!!

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Belbivdevoe oh ya, they are in most of the deeper holes in that section. And I have caught them drifting beads randomly. But it’s tough to get enough film content without running out of battery and storage space on our cameras.. My most recent steelhead video on the little salmon is blind casting, but using a bait-caster set up. I am using the same exact rig. You might check that one out. Really Appreciate the feedback!

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TysonPhelps it doesn’t have to be an expensive rod and reel. Our set ups are only about 100-120$ each. Fly fishing is an art form and in many instances if you are sight fishing. You can get in twice as many casts on a fish with a fly rod than you could dream of with a spinning or bait casting set up before that fish moves away. You just roll the line back over and no need to reel in to cast. There’s advantages with both and it’s always good to have an edge.

    This video makes me sad. Social media only makes it worse. These folks are having the time of their lives and I don't think they have any idea that they are destroying the fish that they are catching. If you are going to kill the fish (legally), do what you want. If you are releasing (endangered) fish, don't take them out of the water, don't drag them on the bank. Pull your barbless hook and let them go. Not to mention that the fish were spawning when this video was being taken....... If somebody interrupted your parents, you wouldn't be here to read this, let these fish do their business, so our kids can enjoy what you did.

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'll be the first to admit that the fish handling wasn't the best in this video that was taken 3 years ago.. But don't be a hypocrite about streelhead fishing. What difference does it make if you catch the fish at the mouth of the Columbia River or in a spawning area on the Clearwater? They are also NOT endangered or there would be NO fishing. I personally have changed the way I handle steelhead that I'm just releasing as I never keep steelhead anyway. If you want to point a finger at a good reason steelhead returns are low. Point it at the 4K-6000 sea lions feasting on salmanoids at the mouth of the Columbia River where they estimate they are eating up to 40% of the annual return.

    • @corgibrothers-coeurdcorgi5084
      @corgibrothers-coeurdcorgi5084 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SilhouetteOutdoors I agree Silhouette, they could have been better keeping the fish in the water and with a quicker release, but as far as the spawn goes, the spawners are up the tribs and laying on their redds. The spawn is OK. IDFG has to collect brood stock, from the fishermen on this river, to help sustain the run. These fish are drop backs and feed on the eggs. It's complicated. Dams, seal lions, ocean conditions all are bad for Steelhead. Leave him alone. A guy and his girlfriend can enjoy a great day of fishing on this incredible river, and they release all the "Wild" fish. Once you touch one and feel the power and strength you will be hooked too.
      That is what is so great about living in Idaho!

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@corgibrothers-coeurdcorgi5084 agreed, I have spoken with the fisheries manager in the region since, and you are very correct that the majority of successful spawning is done in the tributaries, 30% of hatchery fish are not clipped as per agreement with the tribes. The worst thing you could do is not spend money for permits to catch these amazing fish. It is sad, but the wildlife that gets the least amount of help are the one’s there’s no spot light on, that no one knows or cares about. For sure our videos chronicle how amazing these fish are and that they are worth saving. Realistically, without the hatcheries, there wouldn’t be any fish with piniped, cormorant predation, commercial fishing and bad ocean conditions. Hopefully that all changes and I hope to continue to make my annual trek back to the South fork to battle these amazing fish each year with a bit more knowledge to help preserve the species and celebrate them. Appreciate your feedback and tight lines my friend.

    She may want to actually hold her rod in the air rather than pointing the rod tip at fish when fighting? She must lose a TON of fish! Rule number one when fighting a fish...Rod tip high!!!!!! We pay a lot of money for rods....why not let it do what it was designed to do?....Yikes!
