Food Storage Solutions For Off Grid Living And Emergency Preparednes.

  • Showing a simple and effective solution for storing food in an off grid cabin or for SHTF emergency preparedness situations. Although I wouldn't use this technique for long term storage of meat or dairy, it's very effective for storing eggs, produce and beverages. I have this truck box buried in the ground beneath my cabin and we store food and canned good in there year round with no rodent issues. The ambient temperature of the ground keeps everything cool in the summer and frost free in the winter.

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I was living off grid when living off grid wasn’t cool! No electricity, phone or TV. Lived at 7600 ft. and my nearest neighbors were 14 miles away! This was in the 80’s and used to have can foods and dried beans and rice buried close to a natural spring!..... oh good times!✌🏼❤️

I have dug more than one 55 gal drum into the ground (summer cottage, deer camp, farm. No ledge to worry about. At deer camp I also brought an old refrigerator up there and dug it into the ground, horizontally with the door up, to keep things from freezing. Farmers used to have a spring house for cooling milk, but also used it to keep food cool. I did the same on a very small scale, a couple big crocks surrounded by a spring water filled sheet metal tank.
The bottom line is use what you have, including the space between the ears. Thanx for your fine videos! I try not to miss them.

@@Tyneras - My dad and uncles used to dig a hole and put an old fridge in it,with the door up, to keep fishing bait cool and alive. They just drilled some holes in the door for air holes. Worked like a charm! Fresh worms in the summer and fresh worms in the winter.

What a great idea! I have not left the city yet but in preparation for the last six years I got rid of my monster refrigerator and bought a bar fridge so that I could get used to living with less and in reality I really didn't need all that extra space and electric refrigerators are just huge draws on the electrical bill. Saved! Thanks so much.

I like these off grid ideas you present. You are certainly of the authority to know first hand "the how to living off grid". I like the small rocket stove, a great idea. And the freezer room that keeps meat preserved and warms the room too, and a lot more great ideas. My mother' had a coal room for that old coal furnace located under the front porch, and after the first gas furnace was installed that coal room was converted to cupboards of full canning jars (freezing was not a problem). Thank you Boss for sharing!

Great information! Great video. My Father grew up on a farm where they used a spring house for refrigeration in the late 30’s and 40’s. Kept all their eggs and milk and even some of their meats. Dad told me that no one ever got sick from spoiled food. There’s a reason that we have survived well into the 21rst century! Old methods that are tried and true will ALWAYS BE TRUE! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge that most people have forgotten, don’t really think about any more or just take for granted. God bless you and Lori!!

That's a pretty cool video! A friend of my sent me an older video of how you make money with out a meth lab, he follows the same standard of life and dose very well for him self as you do.That's a really great idea with the truck box, rodent proof is a big plus. One neat trick you could try with vegetables is to add some chunks of lump charcoal as its said it absorbs the gasses that vegetables and fruit produce. I know it works great in the crisper draw in the fridge.

Greetings from PEI Boss. Boy this was timely. I was out in my back room. I had it built on top of a deck, 8x15 about ten years ago and closed in. It has a separate exit door with a screen built into the door, entrance to house is a patio door. What I do is put a remote thermometer in there for monitoring and as the season progresses, I open the screen a bit to allow cool air in. If it gets too cold, I close the screen, if it gets "Wicked Pissa cold", I crack the patio door into the house to allow the wood stove to migrate heat. I have shelves that I stack things on, according to the temp I want. In the dead of winter it is 0c (32F) in there. I store my onions, squash, beer and wine. Occasionally I use my Rav4 as a cooler in November, or if I forget groceries, I know they are good. Nice thing about living in Canada, and to some extent, where you are is that you can use your vehicle as a refrigerator six months of the year. I've also buried Aluminum trash cans, on an angle to store potatoes until about mid December out here. I store my parsnips in my special room as well, close to the door and covered in Eel Grass (Rubbermaid tote) , since I am close to the Gulf of St Lawrence. I check for humidity and rotate and take out spoilage. My freezers are out in that room as well, so in winter, they don't work as hard. All the best JC

Thanks Boss! I was at Tractor Supply getting Propane and I saw the price on a new box and remembered that video and thought Craigslist, I plan to do something like that soon. Still working on the tiny house on wheels, I'm in the floodway structures are prohibited.

I do the same thing, but use two 30 gallon plastic water storage barrels, works well, but not the nice easy access like that. Loved the beaver footage on the Patreon by the way, thanks Boss, be well my friend.

I used barrels before as well and yep, convenience was certainly an issue.
