Age and experience is a pretty awesome teacher isn’t it. But it sure is hard to impart that wisdom onto many of the younger folks. If they were smart they would listen up and learn from those who have been there before and learned the hard way. Keep giving out that wisdom boss I’m hopeful many will learn from it.

From the time that cathedral ceilings began to be built into homes several decades ago, I repeatedly told anyone who would listen that it was a waste of money, and that heat rises, making the upper level/loft hot and sucking the cold air in through any crack/crevice, in a chimney effect. Had folks tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about, as I was not an architect or builder, but a nurse. Hey, common sense is common sense, but seems to be in short supply a lot these days! Thanks for reinforcing my thoughts on it! Stay safe!

You hit the nail right on the head JC! Very well explained and perfect advice! I could bore you and tell you I’ve been a builder for over 40 years but I won’t! 🥴 BTW I just referred your channel to another TH-cam channel where a young woman is re-building her cabin in Germany. Guess what?...You got a lot of thumbs up! Looks like you’re well known everywhere. Maybe you could talk about the importance of property ventilating the roof, etc on another future vid. Thanks Boss and God bless!

Words of wisdom! While I did most of my studio right, there's a couple of ways I tried to save money and time mostly not insulating the floor. Big mistake. I'll either go back and add it, or I'll pay the difference over time trying to heat or cool it. Used the T-111 siding though and love it! Good video. Might save some people headaches if they listen.

Thanks Boss for this insight. It is hard to find people who are like you and I who are actually doing the things that others are planning. I wish I had made videos when we built our house but we were in such a hurry and we built it ourselves so we had no time to video. WHAT I WOULD HAVE GIVEN TO HAVE YOU COME DOWN AND HELP ME!!!
We have a cellar that we store our canned goods in and winter veggies. The rest of the house is on a concrete slab. We do not have a frost here where we are so that is not a problem here. Love the foil and we are using it for our second story of the house to provide sound and temperature insulation. I like the 5/8 T111. I use it for a lot of things here and then I cover it with concrete planking and that is less maintenance for me in the long run. We used Rafters and we used the GAMBREL roof design. It provided us with a good amount of living area and we were able to truss up the roof system with a steel truss that supports the larger span over our garage below. So we used the combination of both systems. Excellent information and help Boss. Thanks for the video. Jim in Chile.

If only this video came out before I built my cabin haha. It's too close to the ground for my liking, and you're right about the vacuum effect with the cathedral ceiling. I'm taking your advice and putting in a ceiling about 7ft tall the full length. I'm going to try to jack the cabin up this spring to give me a few feet underneath. Would have been much easier and would have saved me a lot of time to have just done it right from the start. I'm young and dumb though.. sometimes a guy just has to learn things the hard way! Air to air from under structure cooling can bring some nasty things into the living space. Water/liquid to air is a safer way to go. Really enjoyed this video of yours, excellent advice! If you ever do a Part 2, I would be curious your thoughts on these 3 choices on building a recreational cabin in the Upper Midwest (I assume similar to your NH location). 1) Seems like everyone is into pier foundation posts and side skirts these days, I think I would prefer a 4’ crawl space dug into the ground with a perimeter wall of 8” concrete block. 2) If the look is to be a single story trapper’s cabin with no loft, then why not 9’ high ceilings with all windows providing more light that are 1’ taller than windows for an 8’ ceiling. 3) The use of high quality laminated asphalt shingles with a warranty period nearly as long as the now popular metal roofing systems.

The best install I made to save on fuel during the winter months was a ceiling fan above my stairs on the second floor ceiling. My only heating unit is on the first floor on the wall of opposite side of the stairs. A lot of the heat was heading up the stair instead of staying on the first floor. Now it is dispersed more evenly throughout the building. I know it's not "on topic", but all I could think of to share ; )
Bought my garden seeds at the Dollar Tree this week - 4 pkts. for $1. They are very good seeds too; I've used them for years. Spring is only a month away & I'm looking forward to diggin' in the dirt. I was wondering if you save stuff to compost throughout the winter and if so, how do you store it?
Thanks for your wisdom Boss & God bless ; ) P.S. Still love to hear the jingle at the end.

This one I love. Oven produce often turbulencen that are good because the heat reaches all aeras in a room but a cathedral- one on needs that is for shure. The "old school cabin or log home building" in scandinavia or cold countrys in the EU allways build with low ceiling THAT safes wood! As smaler a room as lesser the need of energy.

I want to be, full-time, in a tidy 24x24 alot like yours. The husband's retirement is 2 years away!

All good things Boss, along with rafters its easier in my opinion to build dormers to even give you more options. Take care

Thank you so much I have no experience in consultation what so ever but I'm starting to build my first cabin this summer. I plan to retire and live there the rest of my life. I will have help from my brother who is a contractor but I'm trying to do most myself again thank you I have learned a lot from your video's.

Hey ol buddy hope all is well, I've got my subfloor nailed down, insulated with bubble foil ofcourse, got my walls mostly fabed up, gettin ready for the roof, my shack is a 12x24, gonna go with a 12/12 pitch to have room for a loft, do I need to use a ridge beam? And also is 1/2 inch osb gonna be good enough for the sheathing under the shingles? I'm using 2x6s for my rafters

Great advice and great timing. We are gradually moving towards building our retirement home. So far, we do have a pole barn and a tiny off-grid cabin, but will be building some sort of larger home (4 kiddos still at home). Right now, trying to decide between a steel frame, red iron frame, ICF, and log home. I think the log home is in the lead, to be honest. I didn't even think about the rafters vs. trusses issues. Thanks!

The way to avoid problems is to build from a blueprint. We built a 24x28 cabin first which, maybe we were lucky, didn't have any problems. Next was 1800 sq foot WI ag ext blueprint which was so successful the house was stolen and the blueprint was kept by the officials that did the inspection. Doesn't happen you say? The dead don't talk.

I am thinking if a 16 X 32 cabin with a full upper floor. I am thinking of making a short stud wall (60) inches topped with a barn style roof to give me the maximum use of the floor space.
The ground floor will be 16 X 24 with a 8 X 16 enclosed porch for a total of 896 sq ft. heated space.

Practical advice from a practical and experienced builder. Now where do you get that for free? From the Boss of course! Thank you sir! I want to change the pitch of my garage roof for more storage. You've given me food for thought to get right!!!

You could build without either. Rafters 4' on, 4x12 to the center. Insulation goes on top of roof where needed. Talk about storage and living quarters! 8-)

This weekend my husband and I are going to binge watch your videos (especially this one) and try out the new dehydrator we got for Christmas . What could be more romantic then a learning adventure with your best friend on building and homesteading?

Great video Boss . I know which guy you're talking about . LOL . Couple of questions for you . When you built your extention on the New York cabin you had a birds mouth cut out ( on the rafters ) for posts that weren't there yet . Was that birds mouth the same angle cut as the birds mouth on the wall . Then I guess you had to figure out how high to make the posts after that . Love watching your build videos . I learn so much but sometimes you go too fast . LOL . So right on building higher . Never know when you might need to go underneath . Another question ... 18ft wide cabin ... would you just run the ceiling joists ( 2X10's ) across with out any support in the middle . I know you're not an engineer but I need your thoughts . Advantec . Best flooring money can buy . . Pricey but well worth it . Didn't know that you can get T-111 that thick . Looks better than board & batten .
