Would love to do this. Always said as a kid I wanted to join the Army but never followed through (not enough bottle, girlfriends, excuses etc) but this is the kind of hobby I'd love. Gonna start ordering some kit. Maybe do a weekend bush course or something and get a mate interested. Looks a lot of fun and worth while Kudos to you man.
Another great series, Darren. I love the A-Frame bed, so much better if you can get off the ground. As good a a thermarest is, it's no substitute for space between your body and the forest floor. All the best, Gaz
Now That`s a Flint ! Awesome 2 parter Funky. I`m 56 with bad arthritis, but after watching your videos, I want to get back in the bush. You are a Big inspiration to me, especially going back thru your earlier videos. Thank You for sharing Funky, my thoughts are with you. ATB
Hi Funky, just watched both your video's and compleatly enjoyed them, well done mate please continue to take no notice of the negative comments and carry on doing what you do, and I think it was so nice that you recognised your partners support as with it it makes the the whole experience so much better, take care and kind regards KW
Hi funkster new subscriber here, I am new to prepping love the channel learning a lot and soaking up all the info. Good on you for giving things a crack and being honest about your abilities. Will be watching through the funky video back catalogue for a while. Go well mate.
I finally got to watch the 2nd part, great vid as always! one of these days im gonna come to England ,find you campin, sneak up behind ya with my mask on & say...AW YEAH! I would luv to see your reaction lol
Just found your channel in the last week...love it! Great vids my friend. Hello from West Virginia, USA I am surrounded by mountains and woods, camping and hunting. Brilliant information!
I loveyour videos Funky, this long one was really appreciated. The bed you've made was impressive and your backpack is way cool. For safety reasons you probably should have one other person with you when you go camping.
KEY TIP, fire smoke is attracted to the biggest object around the fire, be sure to put some big objects next to the fire that is bigger than yourself wile sitting down, this could be some logs upright, use your imagination with what resources you have around you.
Great video. I don't know how long I've been subscribed to you. I have noticed your posts for a while. I've been missing out by not watching...I'm going to check out some of your other content. Thanks!
Awesome awesome vid series Funky. Profound statement about learning. The day you stop learning and think you know it all is the day life will kick you in the face, lol. I try to learn something new every day, and your vids ALWAYS help me. Keep up the good work!
I am a big fan of the old US woodland camo, and I much prefer the DPM, to the newer is it MTP? The DPM would work much better in my area as it is much more like the woodland style US camo, which I feel is best suited to my region. Really enjoy watching you use Kit from the other side of the pond Funky. I have decided I must have a DPM "basha" someday really like yours. Thank you for so many hours of great videos, with so much great Kit and info. Cheers, from the Pacific North West (Olympic Rain Forrest), USA Gorbag
hey darren, maybe an idea for a future rabbit recipe... after it's cleaned, just cut the thing into 4 pieces. sear 'till brown in a hot dutch oven type pot. add some roughly chopped carrot, celery, onion and garlic, a bit of tomato paste, some red wine and some beef or chicken stock along with some seasonings and herbs of your choosing. bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and slowly cook until the rabbit is nice and tender. add some potato if you like and you have the makings of a fine wilderness stew with no waste whatsoever! look to mindwiseman as far as the preps, the guy leaves the house with stuff all ready to go! ; )
Heyup funky, really enjoyed this video and part one!! Enjoy all your vids and learn loads. Keep em coming pal!! Would like to meet up an do an overnighter some time. Cheers from Dave in worksop notts
That was a nice bed set up. I learned the hard way how important it is to have a comfortable bed. I live in Arizona and the ground is quite hard. Out here there are a lot of snakes, scorpions, spiders, centipedes, and gilamonsters, and a whole bunch of other dangerous stuff, so I choose to use a tent. Anyway, one day I decided to just use a wool blanket and my tent to see how it would feel, and the next day I woke up with a really bad back ache. In fact, I don't recall sleeping at all that night. The ground is so damn hard, and rocks kept wedging into my ribs. I'll never do that again. So my sleeping set up is still in the making. Out here water is a big deal. We have to drink a lot. One way to deal with the issue of having to make a fire and boil your water every-time you want a drink is to carry a container. There are lot's to choose from, I carry a small igloo. So all I do is use one fire to prepare all my drinking water for that day. I boil maybe five times in my US military canteen cup and fill that jug up. That will give me enough water for a day. My igloo is very light. I don't carry it with water, it's just strapped to my pack. It also gives me the ability to carry a good amount of water with me when I travel some distance from my camp spot. That's very important out here, especially in the summer. Thx for the video
Honestly, who else thinks it would have been so much better if he had put the "Yakkity Yak" song in when he was breaking down his camp site? Fantastic video, thanks for posting it!
never been in the woods for a few month now mate guess what this vid made me think oi Mr get into them woods so on that my next camp is next weekend in the woods simple thanks for this means alot....excellent vid by the way....back to basics is where I want my vids going
Great couple of vids mate. We can all make criticisms, but at least you're out there, doing it and surviving! I've learnt a huge amount from your vids funky, so keep 'em coming & don't let the detractors grind you down mate!
Hi Darren, Wow, this is a first, someone dedicating a video to me, I'm truly humbled mate, many thanks, i don't see myself as the inspiring type, just a short arsed Scotsman who loves the outdoors really. I,m so pleased you are trying the back to basics approach, for me, i believe it teaches you so much more, it makes you engage with nature, utilizing her free gifts, but also it teaches you about conservation of those free gifts, and that to me is what its all about. Thank you once again, and for sharing your experience. Take it easy mate. Atb Stuart.
nice one funkster . i agree with you on the mk1 smock got issued the latest one but the mk1 is my field smock. since when do you see a sqaudie with his hands in his pockets plus that bloody mesh inside catches on every thing. its taken me a while to get used to mtp atb paul.
Great video funky. Loved this two part video. I would of gutted and cooked the full rabbit on a spit mate. May i ask what the shoulder bag was called as i didn't quite catch the name.......sounded like panomaga bag ? Ive never had anyone disturb me during a solo wild camp but i guess theres a first for everything. I wish i was going out tonight lol...........you got me itching to do a solo lol. Thanks for sharing Darren. Take care.............Mick
Hi mate, it's surprising what you see in the early hours ain't it? see what you been missing all these years, it's great fun, and it teaches one to respect nature as well. like the videos as well.
Really nice video Darren, thanks. Agree the Y-Tube community holds a lot of information and it is a matter of weeding thru those that are full of crap and those who know the how and why and take the time to explain. All the best to you and yours - Billy Dingo
I have to ask, what is the music at 40:20, I've heard it and have saw it from the movie but I forget..lol I loved watching both videos, where I'm at I don't or know anyone that has any land to do that, but someday I will and cant wait....Thanks for all your vids :)
Good video but tighten the straps near the grab handle of the patrol pack until there's no slack, which brings it closer to your back. A lot more comfy
After playing endless hours in games that simulate the SHTF scenarios , Building camps and "Surviving" I do belive its time to get out in the real world and experience A day/night out in the good old British Outdoors and setup camp for real haha. Just for fun. Brilliant Video's Funky ,What a down to earth cool dude you are! Keep it up fella!
Fantastic video! As the saying goes, "You learn something new every day". I wanna say that tree was a Birch tree. The bark looked very similar to it and Birch is VERY flammable. I'll let Chris know about you using his char cloth. "That boy sure is crazy about char cloth!" LOL Take care buddy! Cheers Ken
Smoke following you Funky...... Here's the scientific explanation: There is a physical reason smoke follows you around the campfire. Given the absence of wind, or a very low wind, the campfire creates rising air and smoke. This creates a partial vacuum (low pressure area) at the ground level of the fire with air moving in to fill the vacuum. If you are the only one standing or sitting near the fire, you will block air from arriving to the fire from your position. The rising smoke will seek the low-pressure area to move toward. This low-pressure area will be where you are standing or sitting. This applies to multiple people as well. If everyone tries to get away from the smoke, it will move toward them because they are all blocking the inflow. It's hard to win against nature, but it's nice to know you aren't the only "smoke magnet."
Hi mate, I live in the south east as well, and I am sure I have seen you out and about, there are enough of us out here more than willing to help with suggestions, you only have to ask, I come from Canterbury, where are you??
Hi Richard, I live in Canterbury near B&Q so you can't be far from me, lived here all me life, I am always up the old park with me dogs, you may have seen me up at the old fish pond, get back to me, and maybe we can have a meet up. atb Ray
