Back in the very late 60's this was my life . God , such lovely memories. Were it possible to turn time on it's head, I would be the first in line, never looking back.
Dusty Springfield is not mentioned enough as one of the preeminent vocal powerhouses of the golden era of pop. Her voice can go from soft and breathy to full-on belt without losing any loss of tone or clarity... and her enunciation is crystal clear. And to top it off, her gift for interpretation is simply unparalleled. The other singer who comes close is Dionne Warwick, but Dusty is just so special.
Originally composed by Michel Legrand (music) and Alan & Marilyn Bergman (lyrics) in 1968, “Windmills of Your Mind” is a shimmering POP GEM covered by peerless English interpreter Dusty Springfield for her seminal 1969 LP “Dusty in Memphis.” That was a strategic move on Springfield’s part to make a bona fide R&B record in the very heart of where some of the greatest soul music was created during that era. Dusty proved above all that she could sing anything and in any style, and make it all work on an LP that comes together in an outstanding way. “Windmills of Your Mind” isn’t strictly a soul piece. But if certainly has soul as Miss Springfield does it. IT FITS BECAUSE OF HER VOICE‼️ 💚💎💜 May you rest in peace, Dusty Springfield (1939 - 1999)… 🌹
Great version by Dusty. She was a great singer and we're lucky to have these videos to show that to generations that were not around when she was alive.
That relaxed delivery of words , as if she's in the shower. Dusty has got that very calming tone of voice, she could tell you the world is ending, and you'd smile , close your eyes and sleep.
Voice of an angel ,the 60's and 70's was the era of real Soul music and sublime singing . The Temptations ,Four Tops,Isley Brothers, probably the most accomplished and dynanic boy bands ever. Gladys Knight ,Diana Ross,Dusty,Roberta Flack some of the best Soul singers. 👌
Same, it was one of my favourite songs before of Dusty's - and the many covers...but in grief I totally get the spiralling part of fractured thoughts....14 weeks is when he died for me.
IMO she did the best version of this beautiful song from "the thomas crown affair." she totally owned this song. i love the minimalist accompaniment - she is the focus and center of this ballad.
Both the song and Dusty herself are indescribably sublime. She made it into so much more than just another late '60s psychedelic pop tune. I understand Dusty actually didn't want to do the song, didn't like or understand it, but recorded it as per contract- it was the soundtrack of the original 1968 "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, although it didn't seem to have much to do with the plot (wealthy man pulls bank heist just for kicks). No matter- both this amazing song and Dusty will live forever....
where did you get that this song was a 60's psychedelic pop tune? then admit it was written for the movie ^The Thomas Crown Affair..a movie about the relationship between a criminal and a theft investigator??
The song was a representation of Thomas's twisting and turning over his career as a high end thief and his relation with his near equal Vicki Anderson. An intricate game of chess which for him meant either loss of freedom and lifestyle or keeping both and finding a soul mate. For her, at the end, could be all sorts of interpretations of the final Faye Dunaway scenes, some of the most amazing displays of facial expressions be ng able to express verbal passions with the ability of people seeing different stories based on their own interpretations. I never thought of this as one of my " best movies of all time" yet I come back to watch it over and over. The remake is a nice but superficial representation of the original.
A hauntingly and captivatingly beautiful song! And sung by one of the best, greatest (and gorgeous!) singers in the UK and - of course! - in this whole world! Obviously her version of this "classic" song is simply the best; the most heart-felt, soul-moving, dramatic, appealing and never-fading song - interpreted by *the very talented, infinitely beloved Dusty* - ; in her so characteristic, divine, rich! and pristinely attractive voice! She left this earth wa-a-ay too soon; that d*mn!, indifferent "big C"; - as you most likely know already - (unfortunately!) took "care" of that... RIP, dear Dusty; you're still very much "alive" in the many, many hearts and memories of your (loyal) fans ánd a lot of ('just') music-lovers; spread all-over the entire globe!❤
Round Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever spinning reel Like a snowball down a mountain Or a carnival balloon Like a carousel that's turning Running rings around the moon Like a clock whose hands are sweeping Past the minutes of it's face And the world is like an apple Whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind Like a tunnel that you follow To a tunnel of it's own Down a hollow to a cavern Where the sun has never shone Like a door that keeps revolving In a half forgotten dream Or the ripples from a pebble Someone tosses in a stream Like a clock whose hands are sweeping Past the minutes of it's face And the world is like an apple Whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind Keys that jingle in your pocket Words that jangle in your head Why did summer go so quickly? Was it something that you said? Lovers walk along a shore And leave their footprints in the sand Is the sound of distant drumming Just the fingers of your hand? Pictures hanging in a hallway And the fragment of this song Half-remembered names and faces But to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over You were suddenly aware That the autumn leaves were turning To the color of her hair Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever spinning reel As the images unwind Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind

No one else sings this song as well as Dusty did. Barbara Streisand comes close but this song was just made for Dusty's velvety low notes and magestic high notes.

i just love her whisper bedroom voice so soft but so powerful when she hits the high notes. excellent singer.
No auto tune here, just a haunting song from a true goddess.
Absolutely the best version…no one can even come close to to her singing
I love her version of this classic. It is sad that Dusty lived such a tragic life.
That line "Like an apple whirling silently in space' always stuck in my mind as a child.
The one that gets me is
Pictures hanging in a halfway, and a fragment of a song

Round
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that you said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
You were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
