He's not bad, really a master of a certain kind of tone, and very enjoyable to listen to. But I still prefer the soulful nature of Jim Croce's voice or the darkness and raw power of Howlin Wolf's voice. This quote is credited to a man who did not have a bad voice either.
George jones has the golden voice of country music. Me and my great aunt spent hours upon hours listening to all the greats from lefty frizzell to George strait. No one can top ol possum. I’m a Waylon fan through and through but George jones has “the voice.” He set the standard for what real country music will sound like for generations.

They had the same band lol. She took control of the jones boys after divorce because they wanted a steady paycheck. George was missing more than appearing. When he did appear a few times he would be alone in some honky tonk alone with him borrowing someone's guitar.
@jsk81680 I respectfully disagree. None of the musicians in this video were part of The Jones Boys from 1975. They were all working steady with Tammy. This band is made up of totally different (but excellent) musicians.
We have a local radio station in Milwaukee, WMSE 91.7, and on Friday mornings 9-12 they have a show called the Chicken Shack. It's all old country, bluegrass, and rockabilly. Every show has a "Mandatory Jones" segment : )
I was pretty mad when they called George Straight the "king of country" at the CMA this year but hey that's Nashville. They can't make money off someone who is dead and probably just trying to get Straight to come to the Opry. In the end, George Jones is the king of country or at least Prince under Hank Sr.
I saw him live only once. Before he came on stage, somebody set up an armchair and side table downstage right; then a handsome gentleman escorted Miss Nancy to the chair and saw her comfortably seated with a beverage on the table. Then George walked on stage. The audience jumped to its collective feet and applauded and hooted for 6 solid minutes while the man stood at the mic gently smiling and waving. During the performance, Miss Nancy kept her eyes on him or looked down in a ladylike way. George looked at her occasionally during the performance, which was, of course, perfect.
Just the mention of that song's title makes me want to cry. I can still hear my mother happily singing along with George whenever that song came on the radio. Soon, they'll carry us away, too.
I love a lot of kinds of music, but I've never heard anyone who sings any better than George Jones. No one has ever delivered the emotional goods like he did.
There is only one country king - George Jones. Everyone else is a pretender to the throne. NOTE OF CLARIFICATION: In NO way did I mean to dis Hank Sr. here. Of course, he was the major pioneer who blazed the male country trail. His songs mirrored his life of personal struggles; they were brilliant tracks and stand supreme to this day. And the world lost him far too young - a true tragedy. Jones adored Hank. Yet he went on to blaze trails of his own, singing songs of HIS troubles, with heartbreaking honesty. And that is why we love him. He is our mirror. And he sings with that VOICE! The voice that G-d surely gave to one man alone.
Listening to George Jones reminds me of an America gone forever. I salute you, George. You were part of US watching this video in 2024 - and you running from the police on your lawn mower in 1982 was a bad ass moment in time!

Yes sir I agree. This is the only known video with veteran of the TX live country music scene Rob Dixon playing electric for Jones. It's strange for me to see him then because I never met Rob until 2019 when he retired from performing and I ended up taking over his band as the front man/guitarist and the remaining gigs still on the books. Then it sounds like you saw a show likely very much like this one. I am friends with the guitar player in this show who actually resigned at some point in 1981. George Jones is the artist I saw live more than any other. If I hadn't seen Jones a few times between 1993 and 2010 or so then Conway would have been who I saw the most. My first concert seeing Jones was around 1987 I THINK. All of the concerts I saw of him had Conway Twitty as the headliner but a few different opening acts: Ronnie McDowell, Vern Gosdin, & finally Vince Gill until 1993. Then it was always different artists with him. The reason I saw him so much or any country artist for that matter from 1985 (10yrs old) until 1998 was because my Dad was an advertising man for Pepsi. He would buy tickets to all concerts that were the real deal and take store owners or managers as a business expense. As his son who loved country music, what he gave me by taking me with him was the biggest gift in the world.
@@waylonvids That’s awesome. I was 8 at the 1981 show. Don’t remember too much about it except Mom & Dad wanted to leave when Jerry Lee apparently came on stage inebriated lol. They were from that pre rock n roll, Hank Williams era so I grew up with what’s now called classic country always playing in the house. I had tix in 1995 to see George but he “ no-showed”.
@@123proffitt yeah your memory of how your parents acted about Jerry Lee is EXACTLY what I witnessed on my first Bocephus show except possibly worse. My MOM seems to still be mad about that night. Lol
Just read his book it just don't seem possible for anyone to drown themselves in whiskey and cocaine like he did and live to tell about it.What a crazy life he had.
I was high on meth in Clinton iowa. I had just dropped off from hitchhiking from savanna Illinois out of this big biker bar they've got there. I met this dude who was a meth cook and I went with him back to his his place to "get high"...turns out he was a queer. He was respectful though and ingot.put of their wihlthout a murder charge or any PTSD. dropped me at the walmart and as.inwasnwalkong through.the place I seen all the memorial magazines on the shelves by the register...brother, I sat down and cried. And read every one. And the ladies in the store come up to tell me I had to move along, or I wasn't allowed to read without buying...when they seen what.inwas reading and the state I was in, they just said sorry.and went about their business.
I’m pretty sure that today’s country music stations don’t play any George Jones songs today. It’s a crying shame. As Alan Jackson once sang, “Don’t rock the jukebox, i wanna hear George Jones, my heart’s not ready for The Rolling Stones.” Did anybody besides me notice the pedal steel guitar player wearing a T-shirt with Tammy Wynette’s picture in front?
What an example of a perfect country western performance! This is country gold that will never be upstaged! The 1980’s decade was a miraculous time in my life that brought the very best days of my life mixed in with some of the hardest as well. Watching this takes me back to the good days I would so love to revisit. At least I can reminisce about the good ole days in a song.
Most people that are the best at their trade have some sort of vice they rely a little too heavy on..the stress of doing the best that they can when they’ve started from the bottom and worked up gets to them by the time (and after) they’ve achieved the success that they’ve been chasing.
George Jones was almost ALWAYS at least somewhat hammered on stage. But even by George Jones standards, his 1980 version of "hammered" (having added blow to the mix, in addition to already drinking alcohol at a volume and frequency that would kill most humans) was at or near the nadir of his 50+ year struggles with his addictions. He's obviously not at 100% strength, vocally speaking, in this performance. Granted, George Jones at 65-70% vocal strength is still better than most stars at their best. I'm really glad he was able to get clean in the final years of his life. The fact that he even lived to see the year 1980, let alone that he went on to live more than three decades beyond that, is nothing short of miraculous. I hope that, in the sobriety of his twilight years, and with Nancy by his side, he was finally able to experience peace, and some portion of the joy that he gave to so many millions of others for so long.
@@earlgallup5223 about what? His lifelong drinking problem? I'm not talking shit. He IS hammered in this video. He's also one of, if not the greatest country singer of all time. So what am I clueless about, sir?
6ft under and I'll still be listening! Today and from now on, i will try my best to match those sideburns, that shirt, and that honky tonk mentor of a voice. Im stuck in this shitty town of Seattle. So if there are any country angels out there listening, toast a beer. Steven
I think Nick Offerman could do well as GJ in a biopic. Since nobody really looks like George, you have to evoke him. Offerman has tons of strained intensity, plus he sings. I DO think that Michael Shannon was terrific as GJ in the "George and Tammy" multi-episode show originally on Hulu. Talk about restrainted intensity! And his singing was spot-on.
There is only ONE George Jones. he was in a league by himself.

Lol
@@waylonvids Ahh Moms an BOCEPHUS EH ! Some times they dont mix .
@@123proffitt i saw Jerry lee in Canada in 83 i reckon he was still Drinkin !
Merle, George, Waylon, Hank Jr, Mark, Tom T, my favorites !!
The one and only "Possum"!!! None better!
Not one impersonation artist can duplicate the president of country music ❤😮
Sammy Kershaw
George Jones is the man! What a voice-
So many great ACL episodes...
... and we're left with No-Show Jones.
This is the best cuz this was when George was getting arrested in the back of the police car and spitting words at the cameraman era
Just read his book it just don't seem possible for anyone to drown themselves in whiskey and cocaine like he did and live to tell about it.What a crazy life he had.
The Best Ever in my book ! That voice , wow .
how many artists are truly original? George Jones
👑👑GEORGE👑👑
I was at a Leonard Cohen concert the day George Jones died, he sang one of his songs as a tribute, I didn't expect that.
@@rossmerrill1163 hell of a story

@@rossmerrill1163 They were probably all Jones fans. They understood your emotion.
He was the greatest
Absolutely
The master at work!
The Best music country forever
No true country like this anymore 😢
He felt it and lived it.
There's some out there but it's not on the radio unfortunately.
Check out Sturgill Simpson's album Cutting Grass Vol 1. Tyler Childers Purgatory is really good too. Both should be on TH-cam.
@@sicsempertyrannis77is yall nuts? Beyoncé just came out with a hit called, “dis ain’t texas”
Not on the radio, but good country music is alive and well. Just gotta find it.
George Jones is and will always be The King of Country Music❤️🎶💯
I think this is the BEST of GEORGE JONES,I LOVE THE BACK UP BAND!
I jus remember my pops playing country All the time, love the old school country💙
Lord he's hammered.
And still the best.
You are clueless sir..
@@earlgallup5223 about what? His lifelong drinking problem? I'm not talking shit. He IS hammered in this video. He's also one of, if not the greatest country singer of all time. So what am I clueless about, sir?
I love George Jones like he was family. I feel like George and Merle helped raise me.
Both of 'em found Jesus late in life and got saved. Very glad of that.
Their version of Ida Red is ON FIRE ! I just love George doing those impromptu high harmonies too
Nothing like a fiddle and steel. Dam soooo good
George's capo movement at 41:46 was SMOOTH
Merle Haggerty said that everytime he heard George sing he realized he couldn't.
The perfect buzz😊
6ft under and I'll still be listening! Today and from now on, i will try my best to match those sideburns, that shirt, and that honky tonk mentor of a voice. Im stuck in this shitty town of Seattle. So if there are any country angels out there listening, toast a beer. Steven
Jim Carey should play him if they ever make a movie about him
I think Nick Offerman could do well as GJ in a biopic.

I see Jim Carey also.
Yes he would, would love to see a good true rendition movie about George
I can see Carey playing the old 'possum. He'd be great because his method acting is scary.
George Jones is legend!
God Bless George Jones, he is performing in that Heavenly home today.
I just love this! All great players but the bass player's whole vibe is amazing!
