      I followed instructions from another grower and they did say to soak the seeds. I wasn't expecting my weight to double after soaking, so I had to put some soak seeds in the refrigerator until I could get some more soil. Interesting ly enough, the seeds that had been soaked that were kept in the refrigerator for 2 days seemed to be more vibrant and do better than the trays that were not refrigerated.

    Nice to see the Detroit Mix, I like the colours. It makes an interesting package to mix the two. I'm back to growing my beets and chard in coco, the peat/sea soil mix seemed too dense and possibly too moist. Poor yields and I'm pretty sure it was damping off that was knocking the poor things down. Thank you for the vid!

    You are amazing.. I’m learning so much from you. I do have a question, why do we have to put substrate on the beets?.. I’m getting a little confuse, how do I know when to put substrate on top or not to put substrate on top I appreciate you getting back to me thank you

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and thank you so much for the support!! We like to use substrate on top whenever we are dealing with tricky seeds that generally have thicker seed hulls. So the ones we normally cover are: Beets, Swiss, Borage, Cilantro. This allows extra humidity and moisture to surround and soften the seed shells, allowing the plants to pop out easier and increases the germination rate.

    10:32 when you do the "total cost" you do not include AC costs, humidifier costs, watering costs nor labor costs. What would you estimate the actual cost at? 5x of what is on the screen?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those cost you are discussing, are very minor. The AC is the most expensive and it was only $25/month to cool in peak Texas summer... thats for the entire grow space. So it adds a whole $0.05-$0.20 per tray, and watering takes 10 seconds... do the math and you can see why we leave those out. Also, most people don't have a contained grow space like us, so we focus on the tray cost, and don't overcomplicate things.

    Beets are like the swiss chard seed. I wonder if cracking them slightly would improve germination speed? Maybe save you a day or two of growing.
    But once again your tricks and tips have helped me so much with my sprouting and i might adventure into microgreens soon. I mean I have the lights but right now the garden babies are growing under there. When they go out into the garden instead of just shutting them off till next year I'm thinking it's time to try microgreens. Just to fill in the gap between garden lulls! Lol

    Great vídeo!
    Question, would soil medium mame a difference on the technic and the crop growing? Also if I only use water how would affect the crop?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions! Yes, the different mediums do change up the techniques a little bit. For example, if we grow on paper-towels or a hydroponic medium, we will generally see a little bit slower germination, so we may have to leave them in the germination phase for a day or two longer. Also climate plays a big factor. If the temperature is above 85F, most crops will germinate really fast (usually in a day or two) but if the temperature is 70F or lower, the seeds may take 3 to 4 days to germinate fully. You can grow with only water and get really great results!! If you are using only water, we’d suggest using a potting mix soil that way you can get a little stronger of growth since the potting mix has nutrients in the soil. We use a lot of coco coir which doesn’t really have a bunch of minerals (nutrients) for the crops, so they will grow a little slower than a good soil will. Hope that helps!! Thank you so much for your support Cecilia! 🤗🌱🌱

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question! Most crops in the brassica family do wonderfully together and give you a wide variety of options. I would not suggest mixing sunflower, peas or radish with other crops. Nor would I suggest slow growing crops like Basil. The best way to create mixes though, is to grow each crop separately and then combine them at harvest. :) Hope this helps!

    Hi. I'm following this guide but for some reason my Beet seeds are very slow. Day 3 now and just a few poking through. I decided to add a heating pad under the tray today, will that help? It's probably about 69F in the room where I'm growing these. Also, I'm leaving the tray in ET until I see them germinating better, is that correct? When should I switch to BO? Maybe when there are lots poking out?

      @@OnTheGrow Actually. Here is an update that may help other users. The BEET crop I did was pretty good. However, I noticed that the crop was MUCH thicker around the outside vs the inner area. I thought perhaps the seeds were not evenly distributed and moved on (but I always had a hunch it was the heat mat perhaps).
      So I started a second batch a few days ago of a mixed microgreen. Same thing. The center is much less dense with seed germination. BINGO. It's the heat mat. It's actually TOO WARM. I hovered my hand over the surface of the coco and can definitely feel that it is too warm in the center where the seed germination is lower. Cooking that darn seeds! I bought a good heat mat, but clearly it's getting too warm. It says it will only raise the temp 10F, but it's way warmer.
      So there is some info for someone else hopefully. Next time I'm going without the heating pad. And if I need it, I'll put something in between the pad and the tray to slow down the heat transfer and make it more even. I've got some of that solid 1" pink foam board insulation. I'll try that between the pad and the tray next time when I use it.

      Abhishek Jain I think it helps them shed the seed hulls.

    • @OnTheGrow

      The biggest reason is to help shed the seed hulls! You do not want to bite into a beet seed..its very hard.

    Trying bulls blood beets, following your process religiously - but after four days, hardly any germination at all. Bad seed packet? Not enough water misting? Would soaking seed have helped - Or should i just wait and see for a few more days before i give up on this batch?
    PS. The Mustard sown on the same day following the same method is already under light!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Some batches of Beets do take quite a bit longer… we’ve had some stay under weight for nearly 5 or 6 days before they really begin to germinate. I’d give it a few more days and see how it goes! You can also try a mini test for your batch of seeds and soak half of them for 4 to 8 hours and leave the other half of the tray unsoaked.

      Sorry, not usually with beets! There are some microgreens, such as chive, that will regrow, however! If you're curious how we grow different Microgreens varieties we have a TH-cam playlist that breaks it down from seeding to harvest day for various crops using our methods! You should check it out and see if we’ve done the crop you're looking for! (odds are we have haha)

      🙂Hello Alexander Champi Yalle ! Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day.
