"Max Schreck" was actually the name of a German actor from the early 20th century, he played one of the first on-screen Vampires in the famous "Nosferatu" (1922).
It seems Tim Burton chose that on purpose.
Ironically "Schreck" is also the German word for "scare", like in being scared (dt: 'erschrecken' or 'erschreckt werden').

    • @solblackguy
      @solblackguy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

He was also meant to be Penguin's brother, their parents would've had a second son they kept. But they dropped it from the original script. That's why Max is "just there" with no real impact in the story despite having some really serious looking scenes with Penguin that allude to something more important. It was also Penguin's whole motivation with killing first born sons.

Michelle Pfeiffer didn't just bring the perfect attitude (and voice) to her portrayal of Catwoman, she was also pretty handy with the supervillain's whip.
The scene where she breaks into a Gotham City department store and using her whip snaps the heads off four mannequins is a fun sequence, and it has a few cuts to tight shots of the heads falling off, so it's not clear if Pfeiffer is actually doing the whipping. And in most instances for scenes like this, the actor steps aside and allows a stuntperson to do it.
But in a behind-the-scenes clip from the movie that surfaced in mid-February 2021 and instantly went viral, you see that Pfeiffer wasn't just doing the whip work in the scene but dropped all four heads in one take. After doing it and jump roping with the whip off screen you hear the crew give Pfeiffer a huge round of applause.

@@StreetHierarchy I'd actually never thought about that before, excellent point 🙂
I'm a huge fan of Burton's Batmans, I consider them to be infinitely better than the Nolan trilogy; Nolan's films are ok, but I do think they're vastly overrated (I know that's a controversial opinion to have in the world of contemporary cinema, but I stand by it). Burton's Batmans have true artistic value, and unlike Nolan's films these ones legitimately feel like a comic book come to life - Burton's films consistently maintained the campy comic-book aesthetic while blending it with gothic surrealism and elements of dark fantasy, whereas Nolan's films are so much weaker by comparison because he unwisely chose to ground the Batman universe in minimalistic realism, which was a mistake.
Burton's films have it all - the best Batman (Keaton), the best villains (Nicholson is the best Joker; no disrespect to Heath Ledger, but Nicholson will always be the most iconic portrayal of the character), the most memorable musical score (Danny Elfman, bravo👌), and "Returns" is the ultimate expansion of all of that. One of the producers summed it up perfectly in a documentary I saw a while ago - "Batman 89" is Tim Burton in a Batman movie, "Returns" is Batman in a Tim Burton movie. That's why it's a masterpiece. And "Edward Scissorhands" also being the masterpiece that it is likely had a lot to do with it, again, excellent point you've made.

@@Narutoanime16g I'll be honest, I've never been a fan of The Dark Knight. I know, everyone loves it, lol I just never have; a couple of people who used to be some of my closest friends growing up have in fact actually stopped talking to me altogether just because I don't like it, kinda funny, also fairly petty. But I stand by it. "Batman Begins" is a solid movie, I really like that one, but the last two aren't that great, and The Dark Knight especially is very overrated. I have too many issues with it (glaring plot holes big and small, some terrible dialogue, some bad acting here and there, choppy pacing, etc.). Christian Bale's a cringy Batman (but not a bad Bruce Wayne, oddly enough), Michael Caine's Alfred is whiny and talks *way* too much, and I really think they rushed the whole thing with Two Face. Plus there's the whole underlying theme of worshipping the modern justice system, which is total garbage. Heath Ledger was a great Joker, but that's it, that's *literally* the only compliment I can hand the movie. The rest of it's pretty forgettable.

Batman Returns is a visually stunning film that captures the dark and brooding essence of the Batman character. The cast delivers solid performances, with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman stealing the show. However, the plot is convoluted and the pacing can be uneven at times, making it feel like there are too many subplots competing for attention. Additionally, some of the more fantastical elements may not be to everyone's taste. Overall, while it may not be the strongest entry in the Batman franchise, it is still a worthwhile watch for fans of the character and those who enjoy Tim Burton's unique aesthetic.

Annette Bening was originally cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in 1991 after Tim Burton saw her in The Grifters (1990) and thought she’d be perfect. Michelle Pfeiffer was secretly devastated and even mentioned to Jack Nicholson, her Witches of Eastwick (1987) co-star, how much she’d have liked to play Catwoman. When Annette became pregnant with Warrren Beaty’s baby and had to drop out, Jack brought up Michelle’s name to Tim Burton and she was hired. Later, Michelle starred with Jack in 1994’s Wolf, about modern-day werewolves.

This is my favorite Catwoman (and you will see a couple more before you're done).
This one is tied for my favorite Penguin (and can hardly wait for your reaction to the NEXT Penguin).
I always assume Selina had learned all these amazing physical skills but it took something really big for her to start using them, like this weird trauma involving cats (which I figure was just something about a Tim Burton movie and its universe--like Penguins raising a human baby).

Yeah. Tim Burton had a different vision for Batman 3 which would have kept the darker feel. But sadly, the studio wanted to go a more family friendly direction because of merchandising reasons so Tim Burton's third Batman movie (titled Batman Continues) was cancelled in favor of Batman Forever.

Batman became batman because a mugger killed his patents, and in the comics the mugger was arrested, but gothams police became corrupt. Batman also in 99% of his versions has a very strict no killing rule, because if he kills he's no better than the criminals, also hes.....kinda insane and the no kill rule is what keeps him controlled, in alot of versions where he let's himself kill, he starts killing everyone

That was a patent leather trench coat that Selena made into her Catwoman costume. I would have preferred it Tim Burton made Michelle Pfeifer dye her hair color to jet black in order to be true to the comic book character's look.Did you noticed that the neon lights text sign in her apartment wall originally said "Hello There" and then she changed it to "Hell Here". That was one of her nails/claws that got caught in Batman's suit.
The penguins didn't betray the Penguin. Alfred changed the radio frequency to change their actions.
Each bullet that Max Shrek shot could be counted as a life.
You called it when you said that Catwoman was on top of a building looking up at the bat signal.

Just popping up here with a personal opinion: I'm 46, I grew up with the Burton Batman movies. Keaton is my favorite Batman and though I really like the Nolan and Christian Bale Dark Knight trilogy and also enjoyed Robert Pattinson's last year's "The Batman" there's no denying this: Keaton and Pfeiffer have the best sexual chemistry on screen as Batman and Catwoman. They're both amazing actors who also have happened to have been involved in real life a few years prior to "Batman Returns " and that shows. Bale and Anne Hathaway had zero chemistry and Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz barely. With Keaton and Pfeiffer you feel their characters just want to get it on but they can't because they're antagonists. Hathaway's Catwoman flips to the good guys side at the last minute (what the heck?) and Zoe Kravitz's pretends she's a baddie but not really. Pfeiffer portrayed a real psycho Catwoman, not a bland alteration like in newer movies.

Without spoiling much of anything, the sequels "Forever" and "& Robin" are soft reboots, "Begins" starts a new trilogy in a 100% different continuity, Man of Steel reboots everything in DC, and now director James Gunn is starting over again with younger actors. I don't know that it matters much anymore but recently WB has officially connected The Micheal Keaton Batman and Christopher Reeves Superman in the same continuity... but otherwise one probably wouldn't notice. For me it's just unfortunate that Tim Burton never got to do more Batman films... I think they would've been great!

11:00 - "How does she have a leather suit" in her closet? She didn't. She had a vinyl / pleather raincoat that she cut up and sewed into a skin-tight outfit for herself. How anyone could simply cut up a raincoat and re-stitch it together at odd angles and scraps without a pattern and **multiple** fittings, on the first try: movie magic. Or maybe that's one of this Catwoman's magical cat powers. At any rate, she nailed it, and created one of the single most iconic comic-character outfits of all time.
The glittery black or purple spandex of the TV show's many Cat-women were all sexy and beautiful. The many costumes that the comic book artists came up with were all important in their own way. This off-kilter, unhinged, hand-stitched-by-a-mentally-unstable-person-after-a-near-death-experience body suit was edgy and BDSM and raw as hell. The Halle Berry film tried (and for my money, succeeded more than many people give it credit for; acknowledging its many flaws I was still entertained). The Anne Hathaway character was cool, with the goggles / ears thing that was pretty clever. Zoe Kravitz' character had depth. But this is THE Catwoman for a lot of people, myself included. Nobody else's character and costume- each on their own and together as a package- has come close, IMHO.

After all these years of seeing these movies as a child back-to-back I just realized when Catwoman said "it'll be a hot time in the cool town tonight" is a little Easter egg reference to The Joker in the first movie when he fried Antoine rotelli to death with the hand buzzer, while he was frying the poor guy the death he started singing "ohhh it'll be a hot time in the old town tonight"

    • @highstimulation2497

it's a reference to that old song, which if I remember correctly, alluded to, of all things, "anti-Irish sentiment" due to waves of immigration from that country at the time from which the song originates. "Mrs. O'Leary, put a lantern in the shed, and when the cow tipped it over, she looked around and said there'll be a hot time in the old tonight," from 1896.

The 89 Batman was my favorite movie when I was a little kid, the shootouts and overall gothic dark tone. I was so hyped for this when I was little and could not have been more let down. It feels cartoonish in a cheap carnival side show act way, and then the next 2 batman movies got even worse until luckily Christopher Nolan came in and saved everything with the reboot.
