- In Part 1 of this quick tip, I will walkthrough how I like to setup Puzzle Matte AOVs for compositing in After Effects. Puzzle matte are great because we get to have 3 "object buffers" inside of 1 file. This keeps everything cleaner, organized, and more flexible with the ability of alpha channels when we start compositing in After Effects.

Hey! I have a problem with the edges of both crypto and puzzlematte. There's always this 1 pixel border around the object. Any thoughts on how to solve this? Thanks!
If I had to guess without seeing it, its that your renders might not be at 32 bit color. Puzzle Mattes you can get away with 16bit color, but crypomattes need to be 32 bit renders. So you could render the cryptomatte as a 32bit EXR sequence. Try that out and let me know how it goes.
Why not cryptomattes?
I love cryptomattes, but in my experience with AE, it just slows my project down to a complete stand still...no matter how easy the project is. I used to LOVE and only use cryptomattes, but no a days I opt for 2 or 3 puzzle mattes when needed, mainly because of how much it speeds up my project and workflow. Maybe this is an AE issue with cryptomattes, and while cryptomattes give a lot more flexibility, I dont feel like they are worth the performance hit.
Hope that helps out! Best of luck!
@@ChompStudiointeresting, I`m just started to discover why those are used, new in cinema but trying to learn some cool stuff here, loved those options and possibilities
I also would prefer cryptomattes
