    Even though I had my Cryptomatte effect selected, I still couldn't get the material/object mattes to show up when I was clicking on them until I made sure that Toggle Mask And Shape Path Visibility was highlighted. Same interface gotcha happens in Primatte. I hope posting a comment about it is helpful in case that's a hitch in anyone else's gitalong.
    Great tutorial, as always! Thanks for saving me time.

    Gonna throw an idea into the ring here for anyone who just found this like me :)
    Follow the steps until you get into After Effects and have your different Mattes Setup via the Cryptomatte plugin.
    > Pre-comp each Matte individually, Making Sure to move all attributes into the new comp. Make sure to Name things appropriately here!
    > From there select all in the precomps in the Project Window, drag all of them into the render queue.
    > Click the output module settings (defaulted to "lossless")
    > Change the format to ProRes4444 or whatever your favorite production codec flavor is.
    > Change "Post Render Action" to "Import & Replace Usage"
    > Hit OK then Queue them all in Media Encoder
    > Bonus Step: Make a Custom Output Preset so you never have to change the output module settings again ;)
    Doing this will take the processing off of your live AE comp and get you back to work with some fast single file mattes. All while Media Encoder Processes your Mattes in the background. Using Prores4444 (To support Alpha) there is no notable quality loss, but realtime scrubbing in project returns. Plus you get a true alpha matte, meaning no possibilities of Luma Matte bleeding/alpha clamping to concern yourself with when adding glows or such.
    If you're feeling feisty, throw your Beauty-Passes in the pre-comps with the Mattes and you'll have true scene separation layers for easier comping.
    Tested this via a 48-Frame 1080p OpenEXR render. There definitely is a slowdown when the plugin is processing live in the comp, but not a groundbreaking amount. But as I mentioned full performance returned after creating the ProRes4444 video Mattes.
    For the curious on system specs: i9 9900k 8-core/16-thread overclocked to 5GHZ | GTX 1080 | 64GB Ram
    Overall saving time tagging all the geometry in C4D is worth a little wait for Media Encoder to crunch some frames via CUDA while I go make some coffee. The fact you can click the geometry and select your Mattes in After Effects blows my mind! Especially on heavy projects with a multitude of geometry.
    This is such a sick tip, thanks for sharing. Been following you since 2011, always appreciative of your work and advice Jorgen!
    Hope this helps someones workflow! This definitely just changed mine!

    I'm seeing a lot of comments having trouble with the transition from C4D to AE, can you do a video on that to help us out? I keep getting the No Cryptomatte layers found and no tuturial online goes over how to solve that, they all just say "hit render once you added cryptomatte to your AOV". Be the hero we all need lol

    Any idea why the Cryptomatte pass doesn't work over Team Render?
    Enabling direct output and disabling multipass while using Team Render also doesnt result in files being rendered.
    This is really disappointing since you basically have to make a secondary render AND render locally just to use cryptomattes.

    I'm getting an error "No cryptomatte layers found." in AE. I'm doing everything the way it's shown in the tutorial.
    Edit: So, it turned out that it cannot extract the cryptomatte when it's a multi-pass exr. I tried it exporting the aov as direct and it worked but now I'm getting black lines on top. The cryptomatte is the only AOV getting black lines on top of it.

    • @WPSoul

      Yes. They are so slow in AE so there is no sense to use them on animated shots

    • @thepixellab2011
      @thepixellab2011  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WPSoul Interesting, I didn't have too much trouble, but I wasn't using a super complicated scene with lots of layers...

    • @gareth_3d
      @gareth_3d 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. ram previews as well as renders seem to get bogged down with crypto. It is such a great tool that i'm tempted to use it anyway at times.
      I tried to use them in the past and the slowness bothered me. Just recently I saw in the 2019 Siggraph a presenter say that they just simply stuck to the puzzle matte because the slowness of crypto in AE. I guess i'm not the only one with that problem.
      I guess it depends on the complexity of the scene and how many objects/materials you have (depending on the mode crypto is set to).
