Played it back when it first came out. Incredible game and the best in the series. Looks like the remake is changing up the combat system. I'm concerned.
From a diehard fan of the original who has now played the demo, it still feels pretty damn good. Fights feel way less cheap and more intentional than they used to, though ofc the demo did only showcase the beginning of the game so we’ll have to see what it looks like when skill procs are popping off multiple times a second, haha.
I got done playing Star Ocean The Second Story on the original Playstation. I have to say that it is really tough, for a PS1 JRPG. But after playing the demo for this game, I am glad the difficulty was eased up by just a bit. The remake also helps enhance the game, while keeping the classic feel to it. That, I really appreciate. I think I may get it on Nintendo Switch, just so I can have the option to play it on the go. If you haven't played this game, I HIGHLY recommend you do. The gameplay is great, the world is such a spectacle, and the characters are really enjoyable. Plus the story is really good. It is such a great JRPG. Sure, it can be tough. But the remake eases up on the difficulty. I hope there are more classic remakes like this, that go through the same remastering. I think the first three Tales of games should have a modern remake, in this same way.
The original SO2 is one of the few RPGs where I fully completed everything (including Cave of Trials, Gabrie Celeste, Ethereal Queen and Unlimited Indalecio). Usually I end up getting bored and move on to a new game but something about this one just kept me hooked. After playing the demo, it's almost like a whole new game, except it isn't, lol. They did an amazing job with it. Preorder for me, and I don't do that often these days. I hope this can inject a bit of life back into the Star Ocean IP, as tri-Ace seem to have lost a bit of the magic from days past.
