The quality of this video alone makes Justin a true OG. Very grateful for the lesson! I think all I was missing was the "digging" part, which I've only seen pointed out in this specific video, out of dozens I've watched over the years. (Update once I get the harmonics down to a science.)
However old it is, that's a seriously good lesson! I always wondered how that sound was made and, in the space of 10 minutes, I can now do it myself!!!...So thanks!!! :)
Wow Justin, as an electronics and software engineer, I am always in that mindset, I guess, but given the frames per second of your camera and the harmonic frequency, the vibrations on the string closeups are wicked. I digress though, thank you for all your lessons! I've played all my life and still watch and learn from all your videos - great job mate! :)
I now know how to play a pinch harmonic. I couldn’t find a video with as much description as this one has and I needed this. Thank you. I now can try and play the intro to psychosocial by Slipknot.
seriously man!!!!! these guys marty, crispy, justin and everyone who have their tutorials, hats off to them they have helped every guitar player who cannot afford high fees guitar tution, thanx a lot guys i know around 20 guys who gave up taking tutions after they saw your videos. thanx guys
Finally understood the full concept. After all this years with casual rasndom pitch harmonics, some wanted and a lot of unwanted, and tons of not accomplished ones:-D Just the knowledge that it's several on the same string from the same note! I did'nt know! Thanks man!
No, that's not a strick rule, it's just a common way of holding it. If you can get the sound you want with the alternative pick holding you are comfortable with - then definitely do it your way. :) I personally hold it slightly angled too :)
Ive known how to make the pinch harmonic sound for a long time, but none of the other lessons I've read explained anything about how you could get different sounds based on where you picked the string, so it confused me when I could get some really cool sounding pinch harmonics on certain notes, but then I'd go to learn a song and the pinch would be on a note that I just couldn't get for some reason and I had no clue why. Thanks to this lesson I can now squeal with the best of them, on any note
Matt Esses This is what nails it for me. I was just hitting the squeal almost every time for almost an hour before my fingers begged for mercy. Repetition! I'll keep trying to master it tomorrow.
I'm happy I learned these fairly fast. I've played for maybe 3 years, and it took me a few months to learn these. Now I can use them without any problems.
Thank you SO MUCH! Your close up down the string did it. And the location. I was too close to the bridge. Like palm mute area. finaly after all these years your vid bumped me to a new high thank you so much.
Most excellent lesson! I was unable to achieve these harmonics until I watched this video. One thing Justin emphasizes is that when your thumb touches the string to lift your thumb right after ... 3:16. I was deadening the note but I get them pretty well now. Cheers Justin!
Anyone complaining about the nails must have never been played fingerstyle before. Check out any flamenco player these bits are nothing compare to theirs. For heaven's sake knock it off... Anyway dude, I learn and refresh a lot from these vids and your site! Thank you!
Charles Schoebinger Is there a single coild humbucker? I thought there is just single coil and dual coil which is also the same as humbucker. I'm not sure though. Can you enlighten me on this?
This was super helpful, man. I wasn't moving the pick hand around and just getting random pinch harmonics every place that I didn't want them. Back to practice. A good song for pinch harmonic practicing is "Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria. That could cut some practice time by learning a song that uses the technique you are trying to master for anyone wondering.
good lesson man, i was trying pinch harmonics a few months ago when i saw another vid, but i didnt make a nice pinch harmonic, now i can play it easily by checking your vid, good job
This A Pentatonic scale with pinch harmonics is the exact thing going on in Slough Feg's "Why Not". I'm not a guitar player, so noticing this makes me feel special.
Wow. I knew in theory how to do this. I could sometimes do it. After I watched this, and saw you hit them every single time, and the bit about "digging" ... BAM. I can hit them every time! Whoa! Thanks!
Quick tip if you were like me and could get this down, I hold my pick with my thumb and middle finger and hold my index on the string while i pick the string. High gain and bridge pick-up really help too
Awesome,Thanks! When I tried your technique,it came 1st-try, and I even did it without my guitar plugged-in....so it's a wonderful-technique at-that!!! I also found that simply moving my picking-hand slightly up & back over the pickUp area created the different note sounds, just like you showed, on my unplugged gibson 335. thanks again,ScottyG.
obviously the smartest teacher I've ever seen because no teachers have told me that position is everything, i knew it helped but i didn't know it was key
WOW! This is THE best explanation-lesson on pinch harmoncis I have ever seen! Nicely Done! (And I already know all this info so I can truly appreciate the presentation of it) Billy Gibons would be proud. :)
Thank you Justin for breaking PH down... I've been trying to figure this out for months.... Your lessons are broken down and simplified... Thanks for what you do bro, much appreciated!!!,
Man i really can't tell you how much i really liked the video and your way of teaching ... i actually created an account and a channel just to like and comment this video and i knew you tube about 6 years ago :D ... keep it up man you're GREAT!!
I've long since stopped being surprised at the depth of fine subtlety of hand control being employed by great guitarists, but I'm never not completely blown away by it. And y'all always make it look so damn simple. I'll keep practicing. Thank you again Justin, you have amazing fingernails.
Rory Gallagher was a master of pinch harmonics, I recommend all those interested to watch or listen to his ' Walking on Hot Coals' track from his live 'Irish tour 1974' album, the climax of the track is an orgy of pinched harmonics. I found your site from your meticulous explanation of 'Sultans of Swing', great work Justin, hopefully one day you will explore some of Jerry Garcia's solos from 'Althea', ' Bertha' etc, ,they're so melodic and expressive. ,
wow... ive tried learning pinch harmonics a few times before and failed i suppose due to generally poor technique due to lack of understanding, but after watching this i totally got it and am surprised how easy they are!
Thank you Justin. I have been playing guitar a long time and never knew how to get this right. I thought you needed really hot pick-ups....live and learn.
just wanted to say a huge thanks for this. I used this about 5 years ago when i first learned to do this. Just picked the guitar up after a few years and this is a brilliant refresher. Maybe its time to re-shoot in high def! - either way cheers.
A great real world example for this technique is in the Wake Up Time for Freedom solo, by The Cult. I could never figure out how to play it - Duffy's moving too fast. Great channel; love the work; it's helped alot.
dude, youre a great teacher, not to mention what a great guitar player you are!!! thank you for shariring your wisdom :] have you got a band? ill have to look through ur vids, i just found you today n had to subscribe... thanks again n keep up the great work, we all apreciate you Justin!
I love this lesson. He's helped me so much!
Damn man you’ve come a long way lol
Andrew Foy a student of Justin great😀
👁👄👁
My neighbours just had to listen to me play the same note several hundred times thanks to this video
And they loved it!
wow, several thousand for me
This channel is extremely underrated. How you don't have a least a million subscribers amazes me. +1

(Update once I get the harmonics down to a science.)
Oh my god.... I ran across this ancient JustinGuitar video I didn't even recognize you at first
bruh that old ass ringtone 😂😂
Yeah, I watched the entire video before realizing it's Justin
However old it is, that's a seriously good lesson! I always wondered how that sound was made and, in the space of 10 minutes, I can now do it myself!!!...So thanks!!! :)

This video taught me how to do squealies, 2 years ago. I thank you, sir.
You never called me back:(
seriously man!!!!! these guys marty, crispy, justin and everyone who have their tutorials, hats off to them they have helped every guitar player who cannot afford high fees guitar tution, thanx a lot guys i know around 20 guys who gave up taking tutions after they saw your videos. thanx guys
I just noticed this guy is wearing two shirts sewn together...
😆😂😂😂😂
Yeah but my guy Justin guitar has thought me and my 2 older brother and there preeeety good justing is aaaa. GOD
Justin, thank you so much, i can finally make my Gibson squeal like a pig being roasted by the flames of HELLLLL
Ridge Griffin LOL
I finished the blues lessons, and i´ve got say i´m better guitar player now, thanks a lot Justin. Greetings from Honduras, Central America.
I can now melt faces.
LOL
2007 seems like a whole different world
So that was it. Thank you again Justin I'll take a look to the other kind of harmonic sound.
I like that ringtone
Holy this is 2007
Finally understood the full concept. After all this years with casual rasndom pitch harmonics, some wanted and a lot of unwanted, and tons of not accomplished ones:-D
Just the knowledge that it's several on the same string from the same note! I did'nt know!
Thanks man!
Does your pick have to be perpendicular to your finger? I find that style of holding the pick really uncomfortable.
No, that's not a strick rule, it's just a common way of holding it. If you can get the sound you want with the alternative pick holding you are comfortable with - then definitely do it your way. :) I personally hold it slightly angled too :)
"Just fuck my shit up"
Ive known how to make the pinch harmonic sound for a long time, but none of the other lessons I've read explained anything about how you could get different sounds based on where you picked the string, so it confused me when I could get some really cool sounding pinch harmonics on certain notes, but then I'd go to learn a song and the pinch would be on a note that I just couldn't get for some reason and I had no clue why. Thanks to this lesson I can now squeal with the best of them, on any note
Dude, you look like Patrick Wilson from the Insidious/The Conjuring.
O.o
I thought the exact same thing when I saw it in the cinema!
Got a couple of harmonics but those were lucky ones, can't make that sound lol damnit
Same. I literally watched like 20 tutorials in 3 months and I still don't get it. I'm trying so hard but I can't reach that sound
that sucks I got it like 5th try
try putting your finger between the strings if you can't get it
I finally started getting it, muscle memory and repetition.
Matt Esses dude it actually worked thanks
Matt Esses This is what nails it for me. I was just hitting the squeal almost every time for almost an hour before my fingers begged for mercy.
Repetition! I'll keep trying to master it tomorrow.
I'm happy I learned these fairly fast. I've played for maybe 3 years, and it took me a few months to learn these. Now I can use them without any problems.
Do you play guitar with your finger nails?
W̶̷̲̅L̶̷̲̅O̶̷̲̅ғ̶̷̲̅ᴀ̶̷̲̅ɪ̶̷̲̅ʟ̶̷̲̅s̶̷̲̅ I bend with them to grip the string
Zakk Wylde needs to watch this lesson to learn how to incorporate this into his style...
Dimebag Dio Kilmister yeah it would really dress up his music
Thank you SO MUCH! Your close up down the string did it. And the location. I was too close to the bridge. Like palm mute area. finaly after all these years your vid bumped me to a new high thank you so much.
the 1980's called they want their ringtone back
This vid is from 2007...
exactly
Exype the 1980s didn't have ringtones, tard.
Drew Lavergne Yes they did, how else would you know that someone is calling?
+Drew Lavergne lol
Nosferatu approves this lesson
+tubal1 Proper classical guitar playing requires the long nails.
+ModelAMusicTeacher I know, I myself learnt playing with a Spanish guitar. I was just joking, love his lessons.
Most excellent lesson! I was unable to achieve these harmonics until I watched this video. One thing Justin emphasizes is that when your thumb touches the string to lift your thumb right after ... 3:16. I was deadening the note but I get them pretty well now. Cheers Justin!
wow , that's a very old lesson indeed , though Justin looks like a bit like john lydon
He could just use his nails as a pick
Anyone complaining about the nails must have never been played fingerstyle before. Check out any flamenco player these bits are nothing compare to theirs. For heaven's sake knock it off...
Anyway dude, I learn and refresh a lot from these vids and your site! Thank you!
you look like that punk rocker in 70s and 60s
There were punk rockers in the 1960s?
You mean Sid Vicious, bass player of The Sex Pistols? He doesn't look like him THAT much. But I suppose its all personal opinion.
+BAM BAM the only difference between this guy and sid vicious is that this guy has talent
HOLY SHIT I DID IT ON A ACOUSTIC
(is that even possible?)
Umm, ya
Oh wow, just watched this video and did it in about 3 seconds after the video finished. Cheers! Only video in this world that is needed for this. :)
stopped watching when i saw the strat
Jævla same.
spiders georg It's that most guitarists thinks that harmonics should be done with a hum pickup at the bridge
Last time I checked, doing a pinch harmonic on a strat isn't illegal...
Ian Gabriel Dulay that looks like single coil humbucker on the bridge anyways lol
Charles Schoebinger Is there a single coild humbucker? I thought there is just single coil and dual coil which is also the same as humbucker. I'm not sure though. Can you enlighten me on this?
This video FINALLY cracked the code for me. 16 years on these videos are still having an impact, thanks Justin!
This was super helpful, man. I wasn't moving the pick hand around and just getting random pinch harmonics every place that I didn't want them. Back to practice.

2:25 - 5:48 He changes his shirt...Whilst he's playing the guitar.....Best guitarist. Ever.
14 years old and still one of the best tutorials on TH-cam
Awesome,Thanks! When I tried your technique,it came 1st-try, and I even did it without my guitar plugged-in....so it's a wonderful-technique at-that!!! Thanks, I'm self taught haven't played in years never quite perfected this, will now, legend
Great explanation! Your close up camera angle does a great job of showing exactly how to create the pinch harmonic. Very clear and easy to understand.
obviously the smartest teacher I've ever seen because no teachers have told me that position is everything, i knew it helped but i didn't know it was key
One of the best lessons for advanced players on TH-cam, great job Justin!
Brilliant tutorial. So clear and explicit. Thanks.
your video is amazing, i watch it after a year now and i remember how much it helped me
WOW! This is THE best explanation-lesson on pinch harmoncis I have ever seen! Nicely Done!
(And I already know all this info so I can truly appreciate the presentation of it)
Billy Gibons would be proud. :)
Thanks for this. I was very inconsistent with pinch harmonics on two biggest strings but the digging in really helped!
Thanks man. i actually learnt pinch harmonics after this. best video i'v seen for it!
dude....u r the messiah....i was just goin to give up playin untill i saw this.......helped me a lot.....thanks......
Thank you Justin for breaking PH down... I've been trying to figure this out for months.... Your lessons are broken down and simplified... Thanks for what you do bro, much appreciated!!!,
I've been struggling how to teach my advanced students this technique. This is a great way to explain it, thanks!
Thank you.....best explanation and illustration ive seen on youtube
Thank you! The "digging" bit really helped translate the feeling.
Man i really can't tell you how much i really liked the video and your way of teaching ... i actually created an account and a channel just to like and comment this video and i knew you tube about 6 years ago :D ... keep it up man you're GREAT!!

wow... ive tried learning pinch harmonics a few times before and failed i suppose due to generally poor technique due to lack of understanding, but after watching this i totally got it and am surprised how easy they are!
Bloody hell, it works... kinda like a second pluck with the thumb. Thanks Justin.
Thank you Justin. I have been playing guitar a long time and never knew how to get this right. I thought you needed really hot pick-ups....live and learn.
I like it! Can't wait til tomorrow morning's service to try one of these out during worship!
I've never seen such a detailed tutorial and a dedicated maestro!! rock on!
Wow man you actually got me to learn how to do it! Many thanks and here's a sub!
Great lesson....loved the close-ups. I think I can do it now when i get home.
Hey Justin ..thanks ...enjoyed that ... you make learning fun ... now for some practice
Awesome, nailed it after a few tries, great vid and thanks!
just wanted to say a huge thanks for this. I used this about 5 years ago when i first learned to do this. Just picked the guitar up after a few years and this is a brilliant refresher. Maybe its time to re-shoot in high def! - either way cheers.
Helped me out alot, got it down in about 5 mins! Thanks!

A great real world example for this technique is in the Wake Up Time for Freedom solo, by The Cult.
I could never figure out how to play it - Duffy's moving too fast. Great channel; love the work; it's helped alot.
haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure it'll work "a bit of practice" thanks a lot...keep up the good work.
I already knew how to pinch, but yeah... It's still fun to watch others teach well. Good Job!
Very enthusiastic and nice lesson thanx man :)
dude, youre a great teacher, not to mention what a great guitar player you are!!! thank you for shariring your wisdom :] have you got a band? ill have to look through ur vids, i just found you today n had to subscribe... thanks again n keep up the great work, we all apreciate you Justin!
Awesome video man!! Best explanation I've seen yet, thank you for sharing!!!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. DUDE, your awesome!
Very good lesson. Will practice it right away. Thanks :)
Thank you! Your video is still teaching beginners how to pinch!
great lesson! helped me out tons!
THANKS FOR THE CLOSE UP. I'VE BEEN PRACTICING MY PINCH HARMONICS AND I THINK THAT WILL REALLY HELP. PEACE ✌️
Awesome lesson man thanks.
Wow... thank you SO MUCH, I've been wanting to learn how to do this forever! Great tutorial, VERY informative, and extremely helpful. Thanks man! :D
Love that Strat!
Awesome Lesson!!!!
