pretty much. I remember in highschool in guitar class this one dude could do it. I couldn't and it drove me nuts. I just kept pissing around with it and boom like this guy said. I could do it anytime.
+J PumpkinKing agreed. Been searching for this technique everywhere. Its not a common technic because its very advance, but like others have said. its very difficult to do. I actually prefer a hot, passive pickup these days but when I was a shred-obsessed teen, I usually dropped EMG's in everything). Since the Iceman's an old guitar that's had a cracked neck repair job done on it before. ..it has intonation issues quite frequently. When your action starts to slip (caused by a gradual bowing of the neck) the fret wires will catch the string, creating "fret buzz" that prevents the artifical harmonic from ringing out after the side of your thumb + edge of your pick has grazed the string. On my Iceman, this problem occurs the most on the bottom 3 low strings. It's frustrating, for sure. Especially because I love adding a nice low E string pinch harmonic to a heavy riff. On any other guitar I can do P.H. on any string, any fret...with no problems. On the Iceman though, because of the cracked neck and bad fret wires, I'm restricted to doing pinch harmonics on primarily the top 3 high strings. This is just something to keep in mind for any novice players out there or even intermediate players who have noticed that sometimes they can squeal really well and other times not at all (especially on individual strings). Granted there are obviously "sweet spots" on every string between the bridge and neck pickup where artificial harmonics are easier to bring out, the knowledge of which should be studied and applied...but that's not what I'm referring to. What I speak of are problems with the guitar itself. You'll eventually get it down and it'll become effortless...
Metal Magic its been 4 years since yiu made that comment id like to adk if your still alive , i recently bought a godin session about 40 days ago i have a dual coil hunbucker as a bridge pickup does it matter , and does the amp has to do with it also?
1.hit string with pick(pick the note). 2.hit the string lightly with thumb so the vibration is less, therefore the screaming effect. I can't do it, know the idea but can't produce the desired sound QQ.
Turn everything you can all the way up. Tone and volume knobs on your guitar set to ten, bridge pickup for obvious reasons, gain on your amp at ten, master volume as high as your neighbors will tolerate. Now you fret a single note and strum and pinch somewhere between the pickups. If you can't hear a harmonic, move your right hand a millimeter up or down the string and try again. You have to be very precise in where you do the pinch in order to get it to sound as clear and defined as in the video, but you should at least be able to find the harmonics. Once you find them you need to work on perfecting that, because you need to absolutely nail it for them to sound any good. At this point you should be able to hear them even on a clean amp or an acoustic. If you still can't get the proper sound once you know the exact position to pinch, you need to get some more gain going. Pretty much any overdrive or distortion pedal will do the trick. I for one use a slightly custom Behringer VT999 (replaced the crappy stock 12AX7 with a Mesa Boogie one) and I just love the tone it produces, but it's really up to you to find the pedal you enjoy most.
nyanrlz just give it some time, it’s different for everyone because we all don’t have the same thumb so just try different angles till you get it, it’s all downhill from there man
If you want to refine this technique on another level, try doing it on a non-amplified acoustic guitar. The increased difficulty will help to fine-tune your touch, and when you then go back to a distorted electric, the harmonics will jump right out. I do this with lots of different exercises and gain a good measure of improvement by not practicing things the easiest way. Just don't expect the harmonics to be so clear on the acoustic.
Very helpful to newbie to aid in understanding just how versatile the guitar is. It helped me relax into things and not feel stiff and rigid. Most have no idea the entire string can be used in so many ways. Thanks

I do not use a pick while playing, but I have discovered a way to do it without a pick. I use my index finger, and face my nail downwards, then I use my thumb to push on the other side of my finger. This makes the flesh slightly wrap around my nail, like the thumb on the pick.

Personal experience I've had that may help newcomers with this technique: try 'digging in' more with your pick as you pick the string, as it should allow you an easier way to get your thumb to grab the string. Just dig in deep and come out upwards. Hope this helps 👍
Thank you so much... I've known the mechanics of it- grazing the thumb- for years, and when ever I bothered to try, it would be hit or miss. I was able to do it up and down the neck just now in 3 minutes just by doing one of the things you mention. You said to find a place with the picking hand that works for you. That was the key for me. On this guitar, a Jackson soloist, I found that there is a "sweet spot" so to speak, just below the neck pickup and I can hit the harmonic almost every time by picking a string in that spot. Crazy. Thanks again...
I've watched a lot of videos about how to squealy and explaining the thumb knuckle technique is a huge deal. They don't play off as loudly on the lighter slinky strings. I think that's where people get frustrated - the slinky's don't ring as much as a low action higher gauge string. Great video lesson.

12th Fret natural harmonic is one octave up on that string (1/2 length of the string). 5th Fret natural harmonic is 2 octaves (1/4 length of string). If you measure the distance between the nut and 5th string, divide it in half, and measure that distance from the bridge, you can pinch the harmonic up an additional 2 octaves.
This tutorial was extremely helpful. One of the few guys on youtube who can actually explain something to a novice. I had seen pinch harmonic indicators on many riffs I had tried in the past, specifically on songs like Duality by Slipknot, No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne and War Pigs by Black Sabbath. Was left scratching my head trying to figure out how to get that sick wail out of my guitar. Now I'll just practice this a bit and i should be gold

Definately the best tutorial out there. Now I see what I have been doing wrong for the past 4 years. Gonna try this tomorrow for an hour and see what happens. :D
Originally a 'bedroom noodler' with a nylon string guitar for many years ( and a ZZTop fan ) , I was able to get the Billy Gibbons pinch effects by almost crushing the pick. So - when I actually committed to electric ( delayed for many domestic reasons ), my 'natural' pinching and vibrato sounded incredible with some effects and at volume. Adds so much drama and toe-curling emotional depth - but I never really knew the physics behind it. Now I do - brilliant.
I figured this out on my own when i had only been playing for about a year. Never had a lesson in my life and i can make my pinch harmonics sound just like that. And trust me, if i can do it, so can anybody else.
I did this by accident yesterday and thought oh that was cool, tried to reproduce it but failed, and now one day later TH-cam recommend me this. thanks!
Nicely explained, thanks. Classical guitarists do harmonics by resting the index finger lightly on the string, then plucking the string with the middle finger simultaneously. The whole movement is kind of like lifting the index finger off while the middle finger plucks the string. Try it on the 12th fret, which is the easiest place to start.
Good explanation for something that is best taught in person. The greatest players can make not so great teachers. This is a good video for beginners eager to learn.
First heard Rory Gallagher play these. We called them whistlers. Many use the thumb to damp the string, I learned to do it by using the front of the index finger nail to damp the spring.
When you realize you've been doing this stuff since forever cause you're picking just "sucked" MMHHHH Ok no, but I recall it happening by accident from a bad picking or something, I'm sure of it for some reason
Wow! Thank you so much. I been trying to learn this technique for a few months now and just couldn't grasp it. After watching this video I got it first try. I definitely need to practices it to get it more consistent, but I am just glad to finally be able to pull them off. Thank you for your help.
I think I just figured it out. The part that instructors don't explicitly point out is that it's all from a single downward motion. I kept trying to pick the string, let the string start vibrating and then afterwards use my thumb to very carefully touch a harmonic point so that it creates a harmonic without muting everything. But if you just let your thumb skin extend out by a lot from the pick, and from a single motion, flick off of the pick and very uncarefully let it hit the thumb hard on its way to free vibration, it doesn't actually mute it as you would think. It just cancels out the one harmonic mode that has a standing point at that spot. So far, it's a lot easier on the higher strings than the low E since the angle works out better.
Put it perfectly. It's all about the feel and catching that first one. It seriously took me months of trying to finally get one and it's still not 100%. I found I have to dig in a little harder. Also finding the spots in between the pickups that give pinch harmonics. It can be different from guitar to guitar.
yo i actually got it pretty consistently on the G and B strings after like 10 minutes of fooling around with it. couple of tips: don’t crush on the pick i did that and now my thumb hurts and maybe if you’re having trouble switch guitar - i did get it on my strat but i REALLY got it on my les paul. anyway awesome video thanks bro peace ✌️
at about 3:20 is the key. it isn't just the mechanics of how to do the pinch, but the distance between the freted note and the harmonic. You can see carl move his picking hand around and sometimes he gets the harmonic and sometimes not. Just as you can get the harmonic on the 5th, 7th and 12th frets of the open strings, the artificial harmonics are going to be that distance from the freted notes. Finally clicked for me when I realized that part.
wow, really? what a thunder dumbass Breaking shit when u cant get it to do what u want is a classic chickenshit move of never-got-spanked spoiled little temper-tantrum throwers raised by single mothers with no strong male role model in their lives. I've always incorporated pinch harmonics into my playing style and have been able to do them well since I was about 17 years old (now 28). So once again, if you feel like your performing the technique correctly and are able to do pinch harmonics at some places and on certain strings but not others...
Check your guitars:
* Action/Intonation
*Frets
*Fret wires
*Bridge saddle height
*Neck for any cracks
-Also for any hairline cracks near the fretboard
*If your using active pickups, check the 9 volt battery and make sure it's got a good charge to it
Also...
-Use your bridge pickup
-Try using the "Dunlop- Jazz 3" picks for doing pinch harmonics with. Also works wonders for your alternate picking technique
-Use a high gain distortion
-Make sure the volume and tone knobs for your bridge pickup are turned up all the way
-Study the way your fingers grasp the pick as well as the vibration of the strings and how they react to different picking methods
-Listen for any fretbuzz
Don't get bummed out or give up if you don't get the desired results straight away. You'll eventually get it down and it'll become effortless...

I liked all of your comments , I do think though you can do any pinch harmonic's with a thick pick, if you do it right and hold it correctly .
This is great info!
1.hit string with pick(pick the note).
2.hit the string lightly with thumb so the vibration is less, therefore the screaming effect.
I can't do it, know the idea but can't produce the desired sound QQ.
put your amp on high gain its impossible otherwise
Turn everything you can all the way up. Tone and volume knobs on your guitar set to ten, bridge pickup for obvious reasons, gain on your amp at ten, master volume as high as your neighbors will tolerate.
Now you fret a single note and strum and pinch somewhere between the pickups. If you can't hear a harmonic, move your right hand a millimeter up or down the string and try again. So - when I actually committed to electric ( delayed for many domestic reasons ), my 'natural' pinching and vibrato sounded incredible with some effects and at volume. Adds so much drama and toe-curling emotional depth - but I never really knew the physics behind it. Now I do - brilliant.
FINALY! someone who actualy can explain how to do it! Thank you very much!
God bless Carl!! no kidding, you've changed my world!
dude thank you so much you explained this better that anyone else, I got it automatically !!
I figured this out on my own when i had only been playing for about a year. Never had a lesson in my life and i can make my pinch harmonics sound just like that. And trust me, if i can do it, so can anybody else.
this is the first thing i was able to do on guitar. LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!
ROTTER how?!?!? 😂
I did this by accident yesterday and thought oh that was cool, tried to reproduce it but failed, and now one day later TH-cam recommend me this. thanks!
Very well explained. Some tutors find it so hard to explain the technique.
One of the best explanation video out there, awesome bro
Nicely explained, thanks. Classical guitarists do harmonics by resting the index finger lightly on the string, then plucking the string with the middle finger simultaneously. The whole movement is kind of like lifting the index finger off while the middle finger plucks the string. Try it on the 12th fret, which is the easiest place to start.
Thanks Carl...have been trying to get this forever...now practice.
Dear Carl, thank you for all that great lessons.
Good explanation for something that is best taught in person. The greatest players can make not so great teachers. This is a good video for beginners eager to learn.
Lots of lots of thanks! Have a great day!
I'd add that pinch harmonics sound better when the bridge pick is selected.
This is a great explanation. Thank you. I'll try later at home.
First heard Rory Gallagher play these. We called them whistlers. Many use the thumb to damp the string, I learned to do it by using the front of the index finger nail to damp the spring.
Perfectly clear.
hey, thanks for this really clear demo and breakdown. 2 mins and im there!!
Havin fun with this squealy little bends all day just gave me a whole new world of calluses .
When you realize you've been doing this stuff since forever cause you're picking just "sucked"
MMHHHH
Ok no, but I recall it happening by accident from a bad picking or something, I'm sure of it for some reason
You technique of tilting the pick really helped...thanks now I got it
It took me five minutes to figure it out. Thanks a ton, Carl! You da man.
Wow! Thank you so much. I been trying to learn this technique for a few months now and just couldn't grasp it. After watching this video I got it first try. I definitely need to practices it to get it more consistent, but I am just glad to finally be able to pull them off. Thank you for your help.
All these years and i Finally get it. THANK YOU!!!!
hey man nice tutorial, ive started 1 year ago to play guitar and your videos makes me perfecion my techniques ;) Thx a lot...
Very well explained. After I watched this video, I finally nailed it!
_Finally_ got this down thanks to your video! Thank you!
Thanks again Carl that’ll give me something to try
at about 3:20 is the key. it isn't just the mechanics of how to do the pinch, but the distance between the freted note and the harmonic.
Glad I found this video. Great explanation and teacher. Great video!!!! I learned it
FINALLY A TUTORIAL THAT WORKS!! I LOVE U
yesterday i finally learned to properly do this and now its So easy
Broke my guitar cuz I was so mad I couldn't do it
really?
He mustve offed himself shortly after XD hes not been here in two years
I not only broke my guitar but also set my house on fire
wow, really? what a thunder dumbass
Breaking shit when u cant get it to do what u want is a classic chickenshit move of never-got-spanked spoiled little temper-tantrum throwers raised by single mothers with no strong male role model in their lives.
Wait, ur that guy with the record # of restraining orders filed against him by his current girlfriends, aren't you?
Who hurt you?
Thank you so much, I've tried so many times over the years to be able to do this. I'm only 16 but still, I've tried a lot and now for the most part I can do it. Thank you for lovely video
I've been trying to learn for years. This is probably the best explanation I've ever heard. I will definitely be trying this out when I have time. I'll be sure to pop back on and let you know if this was helpful. Thanks!
Best video explanation of this I've found thanks man.
Greta vid, I was playing my first pinch harmonics within five minutes. Fantastic job.
Thanks man! You unveiled a new world for me
Thanks for the lesson man it helped me a lot GOD BLESS YOU MAN
thankyou sir i'm verry happy that I can do it now all because of you
I did it ! I practiced an Hour then i got it quite good. Thanks man !
Defintely the best video I've seen on pinch harmonics. I'm still having difficulty with this, but this video has been the most helpful. Thanks!
i remember asking you about these on thursday and now theres a video!
great vid and thanks for another one
So glad I can do this consistently now
Cool lesson. Yea, most of the good stuff I do usuallly happens when I'm not thinking about it, but just feeling what I'm doing. As for picks, my favorite is a Dunlop Big Stubby 1.0 (red).
Your taught it best. Thanks for sharing
Thanks man I've got the hang of it now. Been trying to learn it for Zepps Since I've Been Loving You the live version from The Song Remains the Same and you helped me big time. Cheers again man.
Finally , a good tutorial !
D'Addario 10's at the moment. :)
How is D'Addario? Is he safe? Is he alright?
Thank you very much explaining this, so many songs I've found have this with a diamond shape with (Harm). Was so clueless before haha
