My first trip to Big Island was in 97, only three months before Braddah IZ’s passing. I remember it still as though it were yesterday. My parents bought all of his cd’s and we listened to them on repeat as we drove and explored the beauty that is Hawai’i. We have gone back every year since, and every year we still hold the same tradition of listening to his album. I have never been more in love with a culture that wasn’t my own, but Braddah IZ will forever hold such a huge place in my heart. You’re sharing your voice with all the angels that have come and gone, and what a beautiful sound that must be. Aloha au iā ‘oe Braddah IZ, Rest In Peace 💚

I'm Brazilian, I was wondering how a culture so different from mine caught my attention so much? Maybe because it is different from us and makes us think about the relationship we have with each other and with nature. See that everything is interconnected. And that everything we saw is a second in the past and not in the present. I think that if we really want it, it's not finished. And yes, it spread beyond the shell that limited him, which was his body, into each one of us. I really liked his comment.

Love the imagery here. I used to work downtown Honolulu and live northshore, driving around the rock daily and listening to e ala e each trip at least once.
The best music can be the simplest lyrical plea. The rhythm and vocals beyond Iz’s masterful, reverberating voice, plus this imagery is a beautiful statement.
    He’d have loved this.

We, the voices behind the face,
Of the Hawaiian nation, the Hawaiian race
Rise for justice the day has come
For all our people to stand as one,
    [Repeat the first verse]
    [Chorus]
    E Ala E, `eâ, `eâ, `eâ, `eâ,
    E Ala E, `eâ, `eâ, `eâ,
    E huli i ka ho'i i ka pâkini alamihi
Gone are the days of the alamihi ways
    E kiko i ka piko o ka mana o ka po'e
The power of the people is the piko
`O ka piko ke aloha o ka 'âina, o ka 'âina
We the warriors born to live
On what the land and sea can give
Defend our birthright to be free
    Give our children liberty,
    [Repeat chorus]
    [Repeat verse 2]
    E Ala E, `eâ, `eâ, `eâ , E Ala E
    [Repeat several times]

Always ...always remember our roots. We must fight to preserve. Instill in our children the important of the footprints laid out by past an present generations. Its time for us to once again take control over the children of our future, so their children may have one. Mothers do without to let what's important to this world thrive without falter. Take your rolls back. Give the men back their place at the head of the table. Sing their praises an support the efforts made by them. We are as said made by their rib. I'm am putting a plea out to our nation. Raise your own children from sun up to sun down. Take back your roll an let the roots start to grow again.its got to stop, like IZ so beautifully said. Stand up an say no more ! An make Mrs. Clinton sit down.I Love IZ I pray he is NEVER forgotten by anyone. He gave so much to all of us. If one person made the change because of my words today, then I have made a difference in the nation tonight. I want better for my grandkids, how about you ?

I believe it means "Wake up," and can mean "Rise up." I do not believe many native Hawaiians are calling for violence, but they want their rights and culture recognized, respected and preserved. They feel that they are made to be the outsiders in their own land. I am not Hawaiian, but I lived there and lived with a native family and learned to love them, their language and their culture.

@@canuckster24 where did you stay? Honolulu? That is a tourist center. Have you tried Molokai, Maui, or Kauai? Massive culture difference than Florida. I know I live in Florida and lived on Guam. My uncle lived on Maui and we would go several times a year.

@@canuckster24 Kanaka maoli (the indigenous Hawaiians) don’t like it either. Our culture is not respected. We have been colonized, whitewashed, and our lands taken away. Native Hawaiians are having to leave Hawaii because we can’t afford to stay.

IZ WAS VERY ADVANCED IN THE COURSE OF EVOLUTION. PERHAPS HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SOULS WHO BEGAN THE SUBLIME LEARNING. HE BROUGHT WITH HIM TO THIS WORLD, THE WISDOM, THE COMPASSION, AND THE LOVE, FROM HIS ANCESTORS AND IN HIS SHORT STAY IN THIS WORLD, HE DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO AND GAVE US GENEROUSLY WHAT HE BROUGHT FOR US, THEN HE WENT BACK TO THE PLACE WHERE ALL THE SOULS ARE, BUT HE WILL OUTSTAND FROM THE OTHERS, AS HE ALWAYS DID IN HERE AND HE WILL COME BACK, TO LEARN MORE AND TO TEACH MORE, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT SOULS DO.
OUR WEEPING AND THE PROFOUND SORROW WE ALL FEEL, IT IS A GOOD SIGN, IT MEANS THAT WE ARE ALSO GOING IN THE WAY TO PREFECTION, SINCE WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SENSE IZ'S SUBLIMITY

A disappointing number of the responses to my comment can be summarized as "If we hadn't done it, somebody else would have done worse". I submit that's not a very encouraging basis for moral behavior. True, what's done is done, but at least we can hopefully learn from our mistakes. But we can't do even that unless we study history. Maybe this beautiful song will encourage people to learn more (as I did). Thank you, Brudda Iz.

Жаль, что самобытная культура Гаваев уничтожается континентальной частью США, а иестные жители замещаются выходцами оттуда же.

This may tick people off but to me the only way to correct the mistakes of the past is to admit they happened and rather than the government trying to just push it aside they need to admit that basically the US government used underhanded tactics to conquer a lot of what is today USA. But the key word to follow is conquered. I'm srry to natives and such it happened but they were conquered and that's it. Even if it was an evil way to win we did win and thats it. Srry to the conquered nations.
