  • CoinWeek's Cool Coins! returns with our first episode of 2019. We talk to David McCarthy, James Sego, Julian Leidman, and Ian Russell at the Winter FUN show and find out that they have some truly remarkable coins at their booths.
Julian Leidman shows off a trio of original gold coins that were given at the turn of the century as Christmas gifts to a family in Maryland. Gold coins were popular gifts during this period, but few examples survive to this day with their original gift envelopes. Not only that, but these coins are exceptional in quality.
James Sego was all smiles as he tells the story of how he placed his first million dollar coin in a private collection. The coin is a 1933 $10 Indian in PCGS MS65+. This is the only legal-to-own 1933 U.S. gold coin and it is near the top of the condition census.
David McCarthy is always on the lookout for unusual and rare coins, a topic he sometimes writes about in his Holy Sh*t, That's Rare column that appears on CoinWeek. In this clip, he shows an interesting off-meta 1942 Lincoln cent that was struck with high relief dies. With this coin, there is more than meets the eye and David susses out the details.
Finally, we stop by the GreatCollections booth and find Ian Russell, who has the finest known 1884 Gold $1 coin. This piece looks like it was struck yesterday. It was graded MS69 by PCGS and is CAC-approved. By any measure a cool coin, the piece sold in January at auction for over $90,000.

I always enjoy listening to Dave McCarthy. He is an extremely knowledgeable guy when it comes to numismatics. I remember watching his interviews about the Saddle Ridge Hoard and being just fascinated by the find and preparation for the sale. Great Vid!

In my opinion the backstory on or about a coin makes the coin it could make or break the deal I think it's a great story and I think you should sell the story with the coin as well very nice guy

Hi. I know nothing about coins but I came across a 1984 Quarter that has been rolled (serrated edges) but is missing the cladding on both sides. As I understand it Quarters need to have at least one cladding to have gone through the rolling process. Any chance this is a rare coin? I can send pics of it.

I for one do not think PCGS is the best grading service. Many other people think similarly. These coins shown though are exceptional examples.

PCGS And NGC Are really the only ones to trust MAYBE ICG And ANNACS But in general PCGS And NGC are the best ones

I'm sorry PCGS is not the world's leading coin company, well they may be the leading grading company, but they're definitely not the best.watch blue ridge silver hound on TH-cam, scroll through his videos and you'll see what I mean by PCGS sucks at grading there's coins in there that shouldn't even be a MS, they got stuff as a 66 that's not even a 64 they suck, I have a hundred videos saved so when I grade my coins through PCGS and I don't get the grade I want I'm going to sue the shit out of them because I've got videos of coins where mine are better than the ones that they say are 66 so I got a great plan coming up for PCGS ,and I'm going to own that company, and then it'll be a good grading company, because let's face it unless you're one of a high spending customers or a billionaire millionaire friend of PCGS is owners you get shit I could send one coin in and it'll get ms62 one of their Rich billionaire buddies sends the same exact coin in and it will get ms66 guaranteed and as a matter of fact I think I'll do a little test just to prove it so stay tuned folks

I think it's kind of a monopoly the only people to grade coins that count they grade one coin ms 69 and no others then it sells for an astronomical price making huge money then people send in better coins and they grade them lower
