I met Donnie Brewer in the Delta Sky Club at the West Palm Airport. Recognized him in a split second. Had just seen GFR in Ridgefield CT. He was very gracious and signed a paper plate for me. Wish I had my cell phone to take a picture. Truly one of my favorite rock groups and drummer.
Sweet Sweet Connie” Hamzy, a famous groupie immortalized in Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American Band,” died Saturday in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. A little info!
They are from Flint Michigan which is about 40-50 miles north of Detroit. The band is named after the grand trunk railroad that runs through michigan but changed trunk to funk. There is a grand trunk viaduct in flint with the bands name painted on it which was done years ago and is still there. This video I heard was filmed on one of the band members uncles farm somewhere in michigan. Almost like a home movie rather than a music video. The song was their answer to how so many foreign bands back then had taken over rock n roll especially the british invasion.
"Sweet sweet Connie was doing her act. She had the whole show and that's a natural fact". How many people knew Connie and the story behind her? I met Mark Farner at an outdoor concert on the shore of Lake Michigan while on a motorcycle trip out there. They sounded great!
Great reaction. I love when you pause it and it your just looking around, not saying anything and your just taking it all in and thinking, "Man!". You can see that you were totally digging Grand Funk Railroad. That was a real pleasure to watch.
The album "We're an American Band" was one of the first 8-tracks I ever owned. Wore it out and it was eaten by the player in my pony. Overall was not the same as their earlier albums - too much like pop less funk. I still prefer the "red" album and "In Need" and "Paranoid".
Pete Rivera of Rare Earth was one of the greatest drummer/lead vocals of the early rock era. He had such a distinctive style in both that separated them from the rest of the pack. Rare Earth was the first all white HIT PRODUCING band signed by Motown Records. Worth the time to look into them, so many songs you'll recognize.
I love the reaction on your face when you've heard genius, imagine this sound coming thru a $12.00 am radio on a Saturday nite, never could get them loud enough ,so I went to the concert, now I've changed for good, only genius bands get my attention now, funny their all pressed in vinyl and not on the radio anymore
Mark Farner (actual lead singer) was a horse trainer, wrote 99.9% of their songs, Din Brewer (drummer and backstabber) write this song, Mel Schacher formerly from ? and The Mysterians (bass player and backstabber) . Grand Funk Railroad was my first most favorite band, and still would be today. RIP GFR
Yes Jamal, DON HENLY is the drummer for the EAGLES and he is the lead singer most of the time.. Love this, and welcome to the 70's Darlin !! The Best years of my life!
Being from Omaha - I always wanted to know whatever happened to the "young chiquitas in Omaha". I remember Z92 (Omaha FM radio station) put a call out on air in the 80s to find them but noone ever fessed up to being them.
Mark Farner was one of my "mentors" learning to play guitar in the late 60's early 70s. I saw GFR in their 1997 Reunion Tour, in Omaha, and was waiting for Brewer to do / say something special with that line when they played this song, but no........ They were great, but the guy running sound had them sounding more polished than the raw kick ass sound they were famous for.
@@completecharleston7142 They came to my city of Knoxville during that reunion tour. I could kick myself for not going to see them then. But we were raising four kids at the time, and had more important things to worry about. My wife and I and our then 15-year-old son did see them with their current lineup in 2007. My son, who was taking guitar lessons at the time, got a pick thrown to him by lead guitarist Bruce Kulick. It was great to see them, even without Mark.
I met them in October of 73 at a "haunted house" sponsored by one of the local Omaha radio stations. I don't recall much - I was realllllly ripped (got kicked out before we made it thru). I remember them as three 16-17 just above average blondes. We got followed by security, then booted, after mocking them. Given my state at the time, I wouldn't remember any of it, if we hadn't been shown the door. Hate fake haunted houses and Grand Punk Railroad to this day.
Mark Farner (lead guitarist) was the usual lead singer, but sometimes Don Brewer (the drummer) took the lead -- as he did here. Mark Farner did, as I understand it, about 90% of the writing. These guys have given us the best live performances ever recorded. My favorite is "Inside Looking Out". That specific live performance is the most intense, passionate, energetic live performance I've ever seen. I will likely die before I see its like again. I think they are the very best -- the top of the heap -- of live performances.

Jamal, you crack me up. I love your reactions to the music. Thank you.
Super cool in the 1970’s, playing their own jam and so talented! ✌️
Genesis has drummer/lead singer. And, as you know, Karen Carpenter in the early years.
After 1975 for Genesis
And don't forget the Eagles, between drummer Don Henley and guitarist Glenn Frey. Queen occasionally alternated on certain songs with drummer Roger Taylor.
@@betsyduane3461 Agreed. Very different band after Peter Gabriel!
@@centuryrox Thanks! Roger deserves more props for writing and singing. ooo, add Levon Helm to the list.
Peter Criss would occasionally sing from behind his kit. . .
I managed to talk my brother-in-law to cover this with his local band. They rocked it and the audience’s have been amazed that a bar band does it! Grand Funk ROCKS!!!!
Yes they do
I love seeing make these discoveries. I’ve been in love with Mark Farner since I was about six. Lol. Love these guys. The Eagles have about 4 people who sing lead, but their drummer, Don Henley sings lead a lot. Phil Collins, drummer for Genesis inns lead after Peter Gabriel’s departure. Dave Grohl, lead singer and guitarist for the Foo Fighters was Nirvana’s drummer.
The best performer in The Eagles was Joe Walsh .
I have always been blown away when a drummer plays and sings and dosen't miss a beat, that is amazing 🙌 straight outta Flint Michigan🙏 Journey is another band where the drummer also sings.
I always pictured these guys showing up at a high school career day. Doctor? Lawyer? No. American band!
They were my go to band in the 70s and still are
It’s nice to see the younger generations appreciating us old fogies tunes🤣
Thanks so much man, this was one of my requests. Other drummer/lead singers are Genesis' Phil Collins and The Eagles' Don Henley.
OOOOOOH THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS BY GFR!!!!🙋♀️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎧🔊
Gil Moore, drummer for Triumph did lead vocals on some songs.
You will LOVE, "Foot Stompin' Music".
Oh, yes
"I love more music than I thought I did"😅😅👏👏🤟🤟
I'm dying over here😀
grand funk is ear candy. they've always been one of my favorites. loved the reaction
Blows me away! I can never get over how he rips those drums and sings with absolute power at the same time! GIVE ERRRR!
Saw GFR at the AZ State Fair in 74! I was 5 but hey I was there with mom and dad and we had a blast! Then we got corn dogs haha! Good times.
Sweet sweet Connie the groupie they talk about in the song just passed away a couple days ago 😔
The 70s, soundtrack to my life!
Levon Helm of The Band was also a lead singer/drummer.
Levon Helm ( R.I.P) was a treasure.... singer / songwriter / drummer & Actor !
We need a video of The Band playing The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down
With Levon singing & drumming away ✌😎
@@bigbow62
Or "The Weight" or "Up On Cripple Creek. Yes he was a treasure. I read his book "This Wheel's On Fire: The Story of Levon Helm and The Band" a couple of months ago. Great book.
Don Henley played drums and did/does many lead vocals for the Eagles.
Man music unites us all. Me I listened to this, r&b, soul and funk. I like 60’s 50’s even some big band but music is for all to enjoy.
My favorite from 70’s is Fight the Power by Isley Brothers
I met Donnie Brewer in the Delta Sky Club at the West Palm Airport. Recognized him in a split second. Had just seen GFR in Ridgefield CT. He was very gracious and signed a paper plate for me. Wish I had my cell phone to take a picture. Truly one of my favorite rock groups and drummer.
Another band with the drummer as lead singer is ‘GENESIS’.
Not always with Genesis, another Band with a co lead singer/drummer is Triumph from Canada
Don Henley in the Eagles frequently pulled double duty drumming and singing
@@390galaxie Don't forget Rare Earth
After Peter Gabriel left them.
THE BAND
Rare Earth's I just Want To Celebrate. You'll love it.
My dad was friends with the Freddy King they mention in the song. He was from Searcy, Arkansas.
Went to many rodeos in searcy AR
Have you ever heard of Pangburn Arkansas? I lived there in 1980, population was 462! A one horse town lol.
The Texas cannonball Freddie King was from Texas
@@davidkastin4240 I currently live in Heber Springs
@@MrFrankenass I did alot of traveling with my job when I lived there. I remember Heber Springs, Cabott, Jackson or Jacksonville? Searcy too.
I was a card-carrying Grand Funk fan club member!! Good to see you appreciating one of my favorite all-time bands. Mark Farner was my hero.
Sweet Sweet Connie” Hamzy, a famous groupie immortalized in Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American Band,” died Saturday in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. A little info!
Your realization is priceless !!
The great philosopher Homer J Simpson declared this was the highest point in rock'n'roll. It was all downhill after this release.
Can we just appreciate how hard it is for a drummer to sing lead at the same time? It's very rare to see!!
When rock and roll was truly Rock and Roll!
I was 12-13 in 7th grade when "We're An American Band" came out, and the album was on GOLD vinyl!!
Another group that has a singing drummer is The Band. Check out Cripple Creek played live!
"Sweet sweet Connie was doing her act. She had the whole show and that's a natural fact". How many people knew Connie and the story behind her? I met Mark Farner at an outdoor concert on the shore of Lake Michigan while on a motorcycle trip out there. They sounded great!
Apparently a lot of people KNEW Connie.
Great reaction. I love when you pause it and it your just looking around, not saying anything and your just taking it all in and thinking, "Man!". You can see that you were totally digging Grand Funk Railroad. That was a real pleasure to watch.
From flint michigan..yes one of my all time favorite bands..gfr..just rocks
The album "We're an American Band" was one of the first 8-tracks I ever owned. Wore it out and it was eaten by the player in my pony. Overall was not the same as their earlier albums - too much like pop less funk. I still prefer the "red" album and "In Need" and "Paranoid".
Check out " Get Ready " by Rare Earth. Lead singer is the drummer
Oh, HELL YES!!
I was like 7 when I first heard that song. Was hearing the drumming and mesmerized by it.
John Slatter get ready the long version
I love the reaction on your face when you've heard genius, imagine this sound coming thru a $12.00 am radio on a Saturday nite, never could get them loud enough ,so I went to the concert, now I've changed for good, only genius bands get my attention now, funny their all pressed in vinyl and not on the radio anymore
i hooked up my radio to my guitar amp...LOUD enough lol
One of the great rock songs ever. Feelin good feelin right it’s Saturday night!!
RIP GFR
Listen " People Let's Stop the War" and "Footstompin' Music" Grand Funk Railroad are insane good! One of kind!
I really enjoy your shows, most of these songs were hits when I was a kid. It's great fun to see your reactions.
I love the way that he's open minded about listening to all kinds of music.
They were like The Eagles where most everyone did lead vocals on the songs they wrote!
Yes Jamal, DON HENLY is the drummer for the EAGLES and he is the lead singer most of the time.. Love this, and welcome to the 70's Darlin !! The Best years of my life!
Freddy King had a photo of him and the band together hanging on his wall.
Saw them back in high school, Albert king opened.
Being from Omaha - I always wanted to know whatever happened to the "young chiquitas in Omaha". I remember Z92 (Omaha FM radio station) put a call out on air in the 80s to find them but noone ever fessed up to being them.
They had probably gone back home to Mexico by that time. Chiquitas, ya know. :-)
Todd N Tyler just wanted to know what antibiotics to take, is all.
Yes we lived like that in mid Michigan .. Dirt bikes, horses, drugs, Rock n Roll .. We were very cool people.
