  • We review the over-hyped under-powered middle-child of the Porsche 944, the 944s. This hunk of self-congratulatory populism can't move under the weight of all its fanboys and white knights. The 944 is a victim of it's own fandom

      Honda S2000 and SRT4 neon were rather savage as well. I'll be honest, I found the first S2000 review more funny than the 2nd one even if he had a point but, Mr Regular is Mr Regular.
      I can't find everything he does funny. But a lot of his stuff is funny. I do find this funny although I was expecting a Hunter S Thompson impression again.
      He sounds so very, frustrated and disappointed with the car. Not to mention as made clear as day, why it's got a fandom like it does compared to other cars.
      I can't say anything for it's fandom because I have no idea.

      Matthew 23: 37-40Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me./inspiration+ This passage is generally used to help people understand our role as Christians towards the "hungry," "thirsty, "naked," "sick," and imprisoned people in our world . It should note that everyone of these situations was experienced by Christ Himself, though at the particular moment, He is speaking prophetically. He explains that every kind of thing we do for people (in this case, His "brothers" or disciples) is the equivalent of doing the same for Christ. It is a call to us to be kind to the Christ in others, to treat others as the embodiment of Christ Himself. We might see a homeless man begging for food on the street and turn our heads when we walk by, forgetting that Christ Himself was homeless. If we knew this homeless man t o be Christ, we would certainly not turn away. Jesus reminds us that the homeless man is Christ. If we take these words to heart, as well as the passage that follows them, we will change our attitude towards people in need and treat them as if we were treating Christ in need./prayer+ Lord Jesus, help me to see everyone in Your image. When I see someone sick, hungry, or in need, let me help them as if I were helping You. Remind me everyday of this parable, so that I might never turn a blind eye to someone in need. Amen.

      I've been following Mr.Regular since the dawn of his empire, I'm just busting his balls because of my bias toward the 944 my 83' was amazing. yes it wasn't very fast but hey it was never intended to be an autobahn monster that's the 911's job, but they're every bit as fast and rev happy as a Miata. having owned both my 944 would beat the 1.8l Miata in the 1/4 all day, on actual roads with corners the Miata cant be beat but will be kept up with and its also 400 pounds lighter with a lower center of gravity so yeah... The main reason I hold the 944 and even the 924(even though they are a waste of metal) in such high regard is because they were supposed to be the "every-man" porsche, a bridge in the gap inviting us all to indulge in something thought only for the wealthy. Mr.Regular didn't touch on this at all he let the small things stop him from at least appreciating the fact that this car was a pivotal point for the Porsche brand. Plus If we wanna get into cars that have been over hyped the Miata takes the cake, I would expect a stock NA to run circles around most F1 cars with how much those hairdresser can talk up there handling ability.

      jamal willson I agree with everything you said, I love my NA6 but Miata's really are very overhyped. it's a great handling/direct car and it has a great chassis, but it's not a god like car or anything that people like to make it out to be. Those wheels are stupid, this car was never designed to run rims this big. All these wheels do is they ruin the handling.

    • @philipcooper8297
      @philipcooper8297 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +thedog556 Bigger wheels are heavier (more momentum) + these tyres are definitely not 185mm or what width Porsche used back in the 80's as their standard wheels. I just changed my 225mm wide 17'' summer wheels for 195mm 15'' winter wheels and the car drives better, more driver friendly.
      The 944s owner did make the handling worse, as the car was never build/tuned for such wheels. That is the reason the presenter is complaining about turning. Put original size wheels on the car and it will get much better.
      In racing, grip is everything, but if you don't have a vehicle that could benefit from it, then all you do with more grip, is you ruin your MPG and handling + put more stress on the car itself.

    • @forbsio
      @forbsio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's the difference in unsprung weight that ruins the handling. Not the tire wall.

    • @philipcooper8297
      @philipcooper8297 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +thedog556 We are talking a about 80's Porsche here. All the wide tyres do, is heavy steering and put more stress on the drivetrain, brakes and suspension system.
      Also, look at 80's Ferrari cars, they do not run wheels you are talking of. The key with wheels is to have as light wheels as possible and air does not weight a thing (in comparison with the rest of the car), unlike the alloy wheels.
      Also, there is a huge difference between the tyre grip and downforce generated grip. That is why wheels of racing cars got smaller over the years.
      TL;DR: I'm not bullshiting you, I drive a Mercedes-Benz w202 and as I was saying, 30mm width difference in tyres affects the handling alot. The 944s in the video has even greater tyre width difference.
      Googling around, the 944s should run 215/60/15 tyres. In the video those look like 19 inch, so we'd be talking about anything between 235 to 265 mm width. That is a HUGE diference in amount of rubber (weight) and grip (the crap I was talking about before). If you want to go even further, then the power steering system was also not designed to move wheels of this width, grip.

      @philipcooper8297 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Try something a bit more comparable, like the GTS, that ran nothing bigger than 17'' rims. Anyway, I'm not going to argue with you. Buy a car, try the difference yourself.

      thedog556 Philip is right. Those tires just ruin the handling of the car. Bigger doesn't mean better. I had a Mk2 gti and buddy of mine had one was well. I had 15 inch and 195 wide. They weren't that big. My buddy had 17 and a bit wider. When I drove his car it felt real sluggish and just didn't feel right. And we both had the same suspension. He drove my car and he couldn't believe how much better my car took the corners. He put on his stock wheels which where the same size as mine. As well as my E46 M3. I went from 20 inch rims down to 18 inch rims. The car feels far better and is more nimble. I used the 20 inch rims just for show.

    If you're putting bigger diameter wheels (wheel + tire) on a car you should ideally change the final drive as the power train has to work harder to turn the larger wheels.

    I had a 1984 Porsche 944 with the same rare color (Pasadenagelb) and brown interior. Mine was very reliable; I only replaced the alternator (and did oil changes) for the 6 years I owned it. I sold it when I moved to France because of high insurance costs there. For me, it was cheap and fun. I kept mine stock, but I had a second set of racing wheels for autocross on the weekends. I also owned a Miata at the same time, and to me, the 944 was a sports car, and the Miata (also fun) was not. Seating is low, but comfortable. I drove my 944 from California to New York without any problems. Anyone considering buying a 944 (in spite of this review) should read up on the known problems. You'll want to find out when the timing belt and water pump were changed. After so many years, you'll also want to check that nothing leaks. I enjoyed watching your video, but with the sound muted. ;-)

    I think the big wheels ruined that cars acceleration. I have a normal NA and I love it. It's not a drag,drift or hooligan car. It's a grip car. I have driven on curvy roads with a Supra Turbo, R32 GT-R, and a Mustang GT and they had to work to keep up with the 944. The lack of power is noticeable in around town driving but it cruises comfortably on the freeway. Find some curvy roads and you won't notice a lack of power. You have to own an 944 to appreciate it. I really enjoy my car. I've ridden in a E92 M3, an SLK, Mustang GT, but at the end of the day, I enjoy the size, practicalness, and handling of my car. But it's expensive and won't impress anyone with its acceleration. In my opinion you can definitely get more car for less in cars like the Mustang or a BMW. But the 944 is unique. I see more old 911s on the road than I do 944s. The 951 Turbo is a totally different beast of a machine.

    so, I'm a former owner of both a 944S and a 944 turbo.
    Short answer to this video is you absolutely should check out a turbo. The 944S has very little low end torque and the gearing is pretty high, which . . .. uh . . . . it seems like you noticed. a bit.
    or an s2. the s2 is a 3 liter 4, so it's not as fast as the turbo but the extra displacement helps with the low end.
    also, i'm surprised you said that this S didn't want to turn . . . . that's a bit odd. 944's are easy to get into oversteer with that transaxle weight out back, so I wonder if something was amiss with this particular one's suspension or alignment.

      Not really a 'showoff' thing. you can get 968's for $10k, and they're decent bang for buck once you fix (or if you're lucky enough to avoid) all the build quality/reliability issues they develop, as pre-2000s European cars seem to like doing

    A 1984 Porsche 944 was my first car. It was guards red, and it had the more classic pre-revised interior. It was tan with dark brown accents. Maybe i'm looking back with rose tinted glasses, but I absolutely loved that car. It did handle well if you knew what you were doing. This brown color and huge wheels do not do this car justice. The classic red color and black w/chrome lip Fuchs wheels made it look stunning.

    People call so many different sports cars slow. I drive a 2001 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with 143 HP, and it feels plenty adequate to me, even on twisty back roads. I feel like any sports car would be an improvement, in terms of driving fun. I'd probably think a BRZ feels fast. People are losing perspective, with modern cars being so powerful. If you're just driving around town and on twisty back roads for fun, you really don't need much power. It's more about the feel than anything.

    Part of the problem with the acceleration and the lack of speed is the oversized wheels, although they would add to the top end if the car had enough torque to take advantage of it. If the 944 had stock wheels on it, it would be quicker through the gears, but the shift points would come at lower speeds.

    I had a track-prepped 1987 944 turbo. With a mild engine tune, it produced 250 hp and even with stock suspension and street tires was reasonably quick on the track. It handled beautifully and really felt like a sports car (not a "sports" car). Mr. Regular just drove the wrong iteration of the car. Of course, it was crazy expensive to maintain, so I sold it for $2k more than I paid for it and bought an E36 BMW instead.

    As for the 944, they make good race cars because they have 50/50 weight, good top end power and they're pretty light, but they're only quick if the driver knows what he's doing: I'm not sure regular does in this instance.

    I cross shopped a lot of cars before I bought my 944S. Heck, I spent weeks driving a family member's NA Miata and I still bought a 944S.
    Mine is quite happy revving(and this is using the Miata as a reference point), and pulls hard as long as you shift so that the revs stay above 4k where it climbs on the cam. It SUCKS at the stoplight drags because there is nothing off the bottom, but spend an hour lost in the mountains and it does start to make sense.
    Heck, the original 924 is fun to drive and it was slower.
    For racing a LOT of weight comes out. My mechanic has a 944 Turbo track car which is extremely well prepared, makes around 400 horsepower and tips the scales at 2300lbs. It runs about the same lap times as a modern 911 GT3 at Watkins Glen.
    You should drive some of the other German big 16v fours- the E30 M3 and Mercedes 190e Cosworth.

    You're right about the acceleration, wrong about the handling. The 944 comes into it's own when pressed hard through a corner, and in the 80's, it would keep up with a non-turbo 911.
