    Give your HDMI mod twice as many lines of detail to work with: You need to hold B button when starting the game to enable progressive scan 480p!

    This was a fantastic tutorial I used to get my GameCube modded! I've had my GameCube HDMI modded for about a year and it's a great solution if you don't wanna find official GameCube component cables.

    • @chileanguyfleegman
      @chileanguyfleegman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How's the resolution? what is you general experience?

    • @RealMarkarama
      @RealMarkarama 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chileanguyfleegman It outputs 720 x 480p I believe, just like it would if you are using the gamecube component cables. You should be able to check the resolution output in the options menu that comes with the chip. I've been using my modded gamecube for a couple years now and it's been working great! The picture quality is as good as it gets I believe without using an emulator or external upscaleres such as the framemeister or the osc.

    10:35 "Input: 660x448i 60" The overwhelming majority of Gamecube games support native 480p output! Hold B when starting the game, and then set the game to generate native 480p output. This way the mod won't need to *convert* 480i to 480p. I believe it even saves your preference somehow. It might be a system-wide setting, or maybe only remembers your preference when the game has a save on the memory card (I'd have to experiment again to be sure). I owned component cables that I had purchased directly from Nintendo back in the day. I finally sold it last year since I plan to add HDMI.

    Might as well ask. How does real-time deinterlacing of 480i or 576i signals work? My TV does it SOMEHOW, and does it very well, but I want to know HOW.

  • @danielsimon669

    I would love to have the component cables, but the RGB cable puts out a quite impressive quality signal. No need for that.

    After a million and a half problems, I finally have my board installed. Pretty psyched! It looks great. I just got really unlucky with a bad firmware on the first board, then the second board didn't work at all. Managed to mess up two GameCube mainboards because of my inexperience. But the final product is pretty dang cool.

    • @tacoconch7678
      @tacoconch7678 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you figure out there was a problem with the board? Were you able to get a free replacement? I installed mine and can't get a signal. I've rechecked the connections multiple times and everything's correct.

    • @RestorationRelaxation
      @RestorationRelaxation 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember specifically but I know I did some troubleshooting. Do you have the correct capacitor installed? Also what are the lights on the board doing?

    • @tacoconch7678
      @tacoconch7678 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Day I used the 100 ohm resistor. There's one red light that stays on and is numbered 29.

    • @RestorationRelaxation
      @RestorationRelaxation 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The solid red light is basically an error message, it should be blinking. Are you ABSOLUTELY sure there aren't any shorts anywhere?

    • @tacoconch7678
      @tacoconch7678 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Day I didn't notice any shorts. I'll just have to redo it this weekend. Hopefully I didn't ruin any of the boards as it could ultimately be a waste of time.

    Alright so I actually just bought this and installed it last night. Fired it up and yay! HDMI worked right off... but wait, no audio... I ended up searching through what little info I could find and supposedly I have to enable the DVI audio through the OSD. Yay! again... nope... I made absolutely sure that my controller connection to the via on the bottom of the board was getting continuity to the HDMI kit but to no avail can I get into the on screen display to alter my settings... The input combo to bring it up is supposed to be L+R+X+Y, tried that over and over and over again, nothing. Any help would be great, having to also hook up cables to the multi-out and running those to external speakers for audio isn't ideal at all.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many points around the area where the controller soldering spot is supposed to be. raw.githubusercontent.com/ikorb/gcvideo/master/HDL/gcvideo_dvi/doc/gc-controller.jpg
      Make sure that it is connected correctly. Way to think of it is one column to the right of C226, and one point down.
      Than make sure you soldered that wire to pin 94.
      The sound should work once your able to get to the menus and enable Enhanced DVI Mode.

    • @zebular
      @zebular 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will check again now that I've had some sleep but I'm certain I've checked the location at least 10x. Going to be pissed if it's something to do with my actual controller board not recognizing one of the button inputs.

    • @zebular
      @zebular 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this is certainly aggravating. Staring at the board pictures and at my own board C226 is printed on the board differently. The cap is in the same spot but the writing is marked off to the side differently, I wonder if I don't have the slightest board revision making this not the correct via to connect to.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could you send a picture in of the board? I'm curious what it looks like

    • @RestorationRelaxation
      @RestorationRelaxation 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jake. I'm having the EXACT same issue. I'm pretty confident there isn't a short or anything. After trying to troubleshoot, my port 1 doesn't work at all. I ordered a replacement front board to see if something's going on with the ribbon cable that can explain the controller problem. The controller used to work, just not the input combo for the OSD, now it doesn't work at all while controllers 2, 3, and 4 work fine.

  • @WiltshireTutorials
    @WiltshireTutorials 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Sam! I just completed this mod myself, except there is one small issue. I cannot get the 480p Progressive prompt to appear while holding the B button on boot up! I have tested it on multiple progress scan compatible games. Do you think it is a solder point that could cause the Gamecube to not recognize that HDMI mod as a component cable?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. A couple of things to check first would be:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GameCube_games_with_alternate_display_modes
      Although you did say that the games were progressive compatible, so that probably doesn't help.
      Note that PAL doesn't support progressive scan.
      Natively the GameCube's component cable contained a DAC to convert the signals to the 4:2:2 YCrCb component out, and the analog a/v port would be used for sound, it seems strange that there isn't any prompt as the fact that there is a signal through the HDMI should allow for enabling progressive mode. The best I can suggest is to check pin 1s connection on the GameCube to pin 20 on the Pluto Board.
      Another thing I can suggest is within the "Other Settings" menu make sure both "Enhanced DVI" and "Allow 480p" are on.

    I’ve done a few GameCube mods since watching your video. Now I wonder if it’s possible to use a JST connector in order to avoid the solder work

    • @SamCampbell

      I have optimized my installs to use a ribbon cable but I I have yet to find a connector that I can easily install on the GameCube motherboard.

    So with this mod, progressive scan will be automatically disabled? Because when I noticed when you started the GameCube, it didn't ask for you to display 480p.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it gives the prompt on certain games that support 480p

  • @WaynesWorld999

    Since the Digital port is just a plug soldered to the board, is there a reason that an external unit could not be made? A cable with a Digital Port plug and a 5v power supply and you'd be in business.

    • @jtr159
      @jtr159 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      While we're on the subject, why are there no aftermarket GC component cables in existence? Surely if the official cables go for $200+ someone could copy the pinout and manufacture them in China. Sell for $50, still turn a huge profit.

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that making such a cable would be extremely difficult to make. The Gamecube Component Cables have inside of them a special chip called a DAC or Digital to Analog Converter Chip, this chip is a very Unique one Nintendo made that also has a lock-out function meaning that it has a secutity protection code that prevents 3rd Party Companies from making a Component Cable. When the Gamecube turns on it looks for anything in the Digital AV Port, if it detects any cable it checks the security code inside the Cable. If the code doesn't match or if there is no code, the Gamecube will not enable the Digital AV Port therefore giving no picture. The code is a special secret code that, only Nintendo knows and can control on an unmodified console. I'm not sure how this HDMI mod works, but it should bypass the whole security video lock code and just get into the internal Digital Signals of the Gamecube.

    • @deleyandrew
      @deleyandrew 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helloz World component isn't digital, it is analogue. I have a madcatz cable that works for PS2 GameCube and Xbox and outputs svideo rca and component. All analogue.

    • @nerdyneedsalife8315
      @nerdyneedsalife8315 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Deley Component as we know it, YPbPr, is analog. However the signal in the Gamecube is digital. The chip in the GC component cable converts the digital signal from the Gamecube into an analog signal.

    @Sam Campbell can the hdmi image be upscale and sharp within reason or will I see a small square on my 1080p 50 inch telly

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well GameCube games were originally 480p or 480i. This device will upscale to 1080p and more prodomenantly 720p. That being said the vast majority of GameCube games were 4:3, there is simply no way around that fact that games took up a square portion of space on the screen at that time. So yes it will be a nice HD square that fills 70% of your screen. The only option you truly have is to stretch the image in your TVs settings but this will look poor , since the games were not designed for this

    Is this a PAL-only mod, or will it work with NTSC region Gamecubes? And does it require any other mod-chips to be pre-installed? I'm custom-modding and painting a gamecube for my sister for her 21st birthday and I want to know if it's possible before I begin ordering this stuff.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one I used in the video is actually an NTSC GameCube, however it should work for all regions. No other mod-chips are required, just what's in the description. That sounds like a neat gift, good luck!

    Hello. I just installed this mod, but I can't get the GC to output to 480p. Games that require 'B' to be pressed do not respond to the command. Games that allow you to choose progressive in the menus have it greyed out. Any thoughts?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I'm not sure what to suggest, sorry. Does your output say 480i, perhaps it's already in 480p (although that seems unlikely)?
      Of course you can always ask questions on: www.gc-forever.com/forums/index.php

    • @SamCampbell

      Actually, one other thing I can suggest is to double check pin 20 on the FPGA to pin 1 on the GC.

    Great video. I have a quick question though. Did you use the 30 gauge wire for the points from the digital port? I have extremely thin wire lying around but I'm not sure what gauge it is...it looks about the same to what you have in the video, but would it cause any problems if it's not the exact same size? I ordered an FPGA but they're back ordered right now :( I appreciate your help!

      @SamCampbell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original Digital Out port is removed and replaced by the HDMI port. The FPGA board acts to translate the signals. If you meant why doesn't it fit as nicely, it's because it uses an off the shelf PCB unlike many of the other mods which are overpriced and limited in stock because they are custom designed and single handedly made by one guy in say, Texas.

    I’m confused, what’s the benefit to doing this instead of getting a getting a RCA to HDMI adapter?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  ปีที่แล้ว

      The simplest difference is in the signal chain. With the GameCube HDMI mod the signal chain is as follows: GameCube internal digital signal to HDMI digital signal to television.
      With an RCA adapter the signal chain is: GameCube internal digital signal to analog composite (RCA) signal to digital HDMI signal to television.
      There is a significant loss of information when moving from the GameCube internal digital signal the analog composite (RCA) signal which makes for poor picture quality. By using an adapter at this stage in the signal chain you are converting a signal with lost information back into a different digital format.

I did see an mod without getting rid of the digital port by soldering the cables onto the pins of the port. Would you advise against this?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soldering onto the pins of the port may seem easier, but then you'll need a way to route all of the wires onto the topside of the PCB (If I understand what your saying).
      Here's an alternative controller point if you need it: i.imgur.com/My2iZAK.png
      As for any jagged lines you see, that is just simply the sheer limit of the textures in the GameCube! There was only so much it could render.

    If I have a question would it be possible to change the game cube digital output with a wii output by doing the same method?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, see the Wii outout in what is described as a "Multi AV" out. Meaning that the cable contained composite, component, and I believe S-Video signals within the cable. The GameCube had the option of a Digital AV out. To put it simply, these signals were completely digital. You could think of it like vaguely the same way that HDMI is. So inside of the GameCube component cable there is actually a DAC (MXB012355) that converts the digital signals to component ones.
      Hope that helps.

      I've discussed the idea of an adapter with someone else, and it would be a great idea, only power would need to be soldered. What about a soft mod in the memory card, can that help improve quality?
      I would definitely want a memory card modded with the GameBoyPlayer disc information inside, so we wouldn't need the disc in order to play Gameboy games in the GBP.
      Also they can mod the memory card to allow imports and backups.
      Maybe even translation.

      Sam Campbell NICE! I am sure they can make the hdmi adapter in a better shape to easily come to the back.
      Also would be better with SD card support, we could play the GameBoy SD games through it, many good games on SD.
      Maybe they can do a mod cover with that integrated and have the sd on front, also the mod cover can have the DVD cover to input and play DVD's would also be another enhancement for rhe GameCube.
      If they could mod the two memory card ports into a single USB would be awesome.
      But they would need to integrate 3memory cards inside for the storage of games, I mean if you add 3 memory cards with much memory capacity inside the GC, there would be enough safe space thst wouldn't require any memory card at all, so they could mod it to a USB maybe.

    I was going to do this to my game cube but realized that you just sliced off a piece of purple shell...I'm not doing that to an Team Xecuter IcedCube shell. They need to make a more versatile chip to have the same functions and fit without insane case cutting... (sigh)

      It is a small leg at the back that adds support the the closed lid signal, but this support is reinforced by the Pluto board once it is in place. I understand your concern when it comes to an exclusive case though. I suppose the only option is one of the external adapters on eBay

    Hi everyone, I did this mod but i ruined the controller soldering so i can't access the menu and configure the sound output and stuff. i read somewhere that i can use an IR remote but i can't find info on what to buy and what to solder where. If anyone could provide help, that would be great.

      I believe you can solder onto the red highlighted pin of the player 1 controller port marked in this image:

      Thats the only one that it can be done to. The gamecube has to have the digital out for this to work. DOL 101 doesnt have it.

    Dunno if anyone can help but just installed a Pluto II card in my gamecube and I get about one second of video before blank screen. My monitor recognizes it's getting the signal but does not display anything? Also I only have this one computer monitor to test on (It's an LG widescreen)

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the LED on the Pluto board indicating. As well, when you say that the monitor is getting signal but doesn't display it do you mean that its telling you that its out of range, or is the screen simply blank?

    Is it possible to do this in a way that keeps the digital port working with the same mod chip

    • @VihenpoBob
      @VihenpoBob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      technically yes because the points you solder on are the ones of the port, practically no because you'll need a male connector and the wiring will be quite awfull.

    i honestly wish this mod was for the Wii instead of the GameCube, or at least there would be a mod for both.

    • @RestorationRelaxation
      @RestorationRelaxation 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This mod can technically be done on the wii also but it's not recommended. Also, it's pointless because Wii component cables are dirt cheap or you can get a Wii HDMI adapter for like $15

    • @METROIDROCKSXP98
      @METROIDROCKSXP98 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Day why is it not recommended ? also, that hdmi adapter converts the signal to native or interlaced 720/1080?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's "not recommended" because there are fine solder points to work with.

    Great video! Really helpful, I'm going to try this within the next month hopefully. I would like to ask you a few questions though. In what order did you solder the other wires not shown? First to the GC mother board then to the HDMI chip or the reverse of that? Did you do one wire at a time or all of them to the board then to the chip? Last did you keep all the wires the same size or just the shortest you could?

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wired all of them to the board then the chip, soldering one wire to the board checking the length it would require to get to the chip once it was connected. Stripping and tinning that wire, then moving on to the next. Once all of the wires were soldered into the board and measured, I just pushed the tinned ends through the corresponding holes in the chip, and soldered them in. In terms of size I always like to give a little extra for movement.

    Wouldn't it be easier to make a Digital AV to HDMI adapter? The Digital AV port outputs pure digital video anyway, plus an adapter would be a much safer venture than physically altering the GameCube's motherboard. It's already possible to make Multi AV to RF adapters, heck Nintendo themselves made an official one for the N64 and GameCube, so why shouldn't it be possible to make a Digital AV to HDMI one?
    Maybe someone could also make an adapter for Wii component cables or regular component cables that connects through the regular Multi AV port, since component video is analog anyways; the only reason nobody's made third-party component cables for the GameCube is because of the digital-to-analog converter chip.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but nobody makes one. The whole thing is really a project someone made in their garage

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm aware that no adapters exist yet, I'm just wondering why nobody ever seemed to think of making one.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it would be really nice if someone came up with one, but I suppose it's a niche market

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I guess that's true. Still, modding itself is a pretty niche activity and selling pre-modded consoles does in itself appeal to a narrow audience at best, so I guess there's not too much harm in making an adapter either way. That's just my take on it, though.

    I consider 480p "high resolution" because most games before the Dreamcast output in 240p

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but you only get it in 480i, and it usually isn't very clean on analog

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Campbell All of the 6th Generation consoles could do 480p which is a very clean signal when used properly. 240p gives an emulator sharp look but 480p gives more details on the picture. 480p is more clearer than 480i because it is a progressive image

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helloz World
      The GameCube requires a component cable to get to 480p, otherwise you are stuck with the single yellow A/V cable

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Campbell I have the Gamecube Component cables and with this mod you can enable 480p on 480p games such as Super Mario Sunshine by holding B as the game boots up. You can also force 480p on 480i games by using a homebrew software called Swiss, it can be launched using Datel's SD Media Launcher which can be bought on Codejunkies.com. Try it, the HDMI mod can do 480p just like the Component Cables can! Just remember to hold the B button before the Gamecube is on and don't let go until a message on-screen says before the game starts "Would you like to enable Progressive Scan?" then select Yes to get 480p :D Lots of games support a 480p mode and if they don't they can be forced. Swiss also can do Widescreen too on 4:3 games!! The forcing of anything by Swiss will not work on every game but it will on most :3

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helloz World
      Thanks! But I know this already. I just wanted to tell you that the 480p will only work with a component cable or this mod, in case you had assumed that the default cable supported a digital signal for some reason.

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a great idea! I would say that the most challenging part of this mod would be desoldering the digital connector if you are using desoldering wick only.
      I'm not sure of your experience doing these types of soldering jobs, but if you haven't done much before desoldering pins would be something I would recommend practicing.
      Also if I had to advertise myself, I can do installs which are linked in the description, but that kind of defeats the fun of it.

      They're all just FPGAs (meaning field-programmable gate-arrays), so the rough comparison would be to a programmable micro-controller like PIC. Someone has simply written a program that interprets the GameCube digital data and translates it to the HDMI interface
