    Thanks for this video, Gord. I recently upgraded to a Nova G3 chuck, to replace the generic chuck that came with my lathe. Unfortunately, with mounting the first bowl, the scroll ring pulled away from inside the chuck and three of the slides came out of the body of the chuck. I appears that the retaining snap ring wasn't fully seated at the factory. But, your video helped me with reassembly of the chuck and your technique used for reinstalling the slides into the scroll ring made it simple. Next time I take it apart will be for its first cleaning! Now, I just have to see what other videos you might have :-)...

    Lots of good information Gord. At some time I may need to do the same. If you think you are spoiled with 2 Super Nova 2 chucks then I am SPOILED ROTTEN... have 3. I hate changing jaws plus it is nice to be able to leave work in a chuck and work on something else on the other chuck.

    I use graphite spray lube instead of oil or WD. I like it because it doesn't attract dust and stays dry lubed. Also use it in the tailstock, that's another place that needs periodic attention, often overlooked.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graphite is good and I have used it for a number of things. My complaint is that I manage to get it on everything within 2 miles of what I’m spraying. Obviously, it’s the graphite’s fault. Couldn’t be that I’m messy!! I think I will stay with WD-40. Thanks for the input anyway, Bert. Others may be happy to read your tip. Thanks for watching. 😃👍

      Hi Terry,
      Sorry for the delay. I'm recuperating from surgery and I will try to answer this from memory as I am not allowed to go into my shop for any reason. My wife is a bit of a worrier!
      If you look at the circumference of the chuck you will see on the outside a small hole into which you have to insert a metric hex wrench to remove the set screw. It's small but I don't remember the size. After this is out of the way I believe the black plastic ring should fall out. If not, there may be another set screw that needs to be removed. As I said, I am trying to remember this so if this is not correct let me know and I will take a look at the chuck. Good luck with it.

    Hey Gord, I just bought my first lathe and it came with the SuperNova2 chuck (both used) and the lathe bed and chuck are both fairly rusty. Any advise as to clean the rust off? Nervous about messing something up. Thanks in advance! Great video, thanks for sharing!

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Shawn,
      First, the bedways. I would use a product called Nevr-Dull. I have only used it on my tablesaw top and it worked great. You may have to use some emery cloth if the bedways are very badly rusted.
      For the chuck, I would take it apart and soak the pieces in Blade & Bit cleaner. Then use a brass brush on it. I would test the chrome parts of the chuck with the cleaner in a small area to make sure it’s not going to tarnish it.
      I hope that helps! If not, be sure to let me know and I’ll see if I can help in some other way. Good luck with it!

My ONLY chuck is a G3...my name is not Rockefeller either. ;-) The G3 works much like your chuck except the snap ring is much more difficult to remove and install. I am anal retentive with keeping my tools clean, it is easy to spot when wear marks appear so you can head damage off before it damages tools and in the case such as a collet cleaning out dust and debris will assure it functions properly. I worked at a shop and the craftsman who worked next to me used to constantly berate me about me disassembling the router collet and cleaning it after each time. One day he had a router bit move on him ruining the work and he immediately hear me say, "clean that collet out each time and you will never have that happen to you. I have actually seen router collets break when debris collects in the collet and bits are tightened in them.
    Avoid mishaps and clean and inspect tools after each use!.

    Gooday. A few comments.
    Be careful of circlips. They can fly off with a great deal of force. A cloth should be put over the top when removing or replacing.
    WD 40 is a water displacement not a cleaner or lubricant. Nova in their manual suggest grease to lubricate it. Quote from page 21 in their manual: "Re-grease the scroll ring and pinions; be very generous with grease application. (Normal multi purpose grease is sufficient)" Manual is available here. teknatool.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/19000024476-supernova2-chuck-manual-
    Always leave the jaws finger tight and put them together before tightening the screws to ensure they are centered.
    The chap you mentioned about the cardboard box got the idea from me as I did a series on chuck maintenance here in 2013: th-cam.com/video/PF3IfVkbCxE/w-d-xo.html

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a difficult question to answer without more information. First thing, have you soaked it real well with WD 40 or some similar item? Have you used compressed air to blow all the dust out of it that you can?
