The fact the game's very first speedrun is archived, with video footage no less, is honestly a miracle based what i've seen in other speedrun videos where footage of early runs are lost to time.
It's funny, you play these games so much when you're young that you honestly don't think there is anything more to know about them. But watching your videos is like finding a secret draw in an old antique desk you've had for 20 years.

I still find it mind boggling that PS3 R&C didn't get it's own leaderboard when the difference was immediately so clear. I'd spent so much time on practicing it, but gave up because I wasn't going to buy a new console just for the sake of speedrunning.

How does one discover “oh I’m just gonna pull the Rhino out then play a movie just before going into the turret” to keep access to the gun? Completely bonkers
I absolutely love when these record videos go into first person mode. Great work with editing and pacing as always, and especially in presenting your own runs in a cool manner. This planet sucks!!! But it makes for a great video.
Very nice video! It's really cool to see all of the strats from before I started playing. If anyone's wondering why the times Ricky mentions people getting on Hoven don't match up with the segment time displayed on screen, it's because he's disregarding the planet load time in this video (about 15 seconds).
There must be a "critical" hitbox inside each of the turrets that gets tickled by splash damage if you're dead-on, either that or it's the glowing red barrels which sometimes rotate away from the player.
Fantastic video. It's so interesting how in speedrunning, sometimes strats are found that optimize times and make tricks easier...but then paradoxically, as new things are discovered that further lower times, it can swing back and become hard again.

This is top quality content. What a fantastic storyteller you are. I just watched a 30 minute video on a topic I don't engage in at all. That was a really cool journey. I'm not that into speed running I think somethings are cool and I wasn't sure I'd make it through the video I was just trying to tap some nostalgia but at the ISF part I knew why I was watching still. You peel layers off while adding more layers to the story. It's a wonderful historical journey on something that's not very important but enjoyable none the less. Great work.
There's something OG about the shitty video quality of old recorded runs. I mean, they weren't necessarily made for viewing pleasure. They were usually made for verification purposes. Plus, TH-cam was a baby back then and Twitch was still swimmin' in its daddy's ballbag, so there wasn't much of a reason/audience.
Great stuff as always. I first joined the community in 2015 and back then, while Hoven SI was routed out of the run, the stigma it left was still very much there. Even though it was no longer apart from the run, people were still telling horror stories about how awful Hoven SI was.
Awesome video this game was really my childhood I remember dying on that Turret fight on the ice planet a lot haha. Didnt know about the Rhino strategy but thats so cool I'm gonna use that in my next playthrough of the game. So cool that you can just skip the entire map on like 5 secounds.

Then Ratchet just fucking *SCALES THE SIDE OF THE SHEER CLIFF FACE, BYPASSING THE ARMY, BLOWING UP THE CARRIER SHIP AND LEAVING IN LESS THAN 2 MINUTES!*
I never completed Ratchet & Clank because of this level, because my CD had a scratch on it that made the game crash every time I was about to get to the turret section...Sad times, but happy to see this game is still getting the love it deserves
You just gave me goosebumps, dopamine rushes, and excitement at the same time as I was progressing through the video... and I got emotional to be honest, because Ratchet & Clank was my childhood. I don't know You, but I hope that You have a wonderful day Sir! Thank you very, very much!
Imma comment here cause it's the latest video but this is general to your content, I like how you talk about your own achievements you sound so proud and not cocky it's quite wholesome. It's cool to have the history narrated by a guy who was part of it, maybe because it gives a feel of continuity like it's not in the past you're still there even if obviously none of the other histories are about dead people lol it's just a slight feel it gives. I've listened to a ton of WR histories or progression and none do it like you, I mean including their stuff like you do for what it's worth. Addin to the overall noticable quality of your narrating / editing / sound mix or whatever "the video sounds good" it ends up being really good content. It gets a bit dull if you're talking for a really long time about the same thing but you do manage your structure quite decently and mix up what you're talking about (short stories, strategies, level walkthrough etc). tldr good shit dude.

For me that started watching speedruns perhaps just a year ago, these videos are extremely interesting since I only know the current, optimal strats, without being aware of the huge amount of strats that were used previously. Nice video ^^
Its sick that so many people manages to find new ways to complete planets in different ways in the first ratchet and clank game, I love the speedruns of R&C 1 more than 2 and 3 since the movement is different that on the other games and you can do some moves that are impossible in the other games.
Man, I didn't know this iteration had a speedrunning community, loved this game so much when I was a kid. This was real fun to watch, and first video of yours I've seen, subbed. Gonna binge some more.

crazy that i know almost every single background themes ThaRixer uses on his videos, maybe i'm not the only person that listens more to video game OST than 'regular' music lol.
I'm loving the trip down memory lane, showing the oldest speedrun as well as clips of at the time, newly found tricks/skips/shortcuts, it's a shame that so many videos of both interesting speedruns and tactics get deleted so often these days.
I recently started this gsme on the ps4 snd went back to this video to to say that im way more impressed than i already was with all this. I play the game casually, and holy shit these things they do are impressive.
Wow this planet really is terrible, I still can’t believe the critical hits are random on the helicopters. Regardless of all the walls this planet has had over the years it’s incredible how you all were able to bring the time down, but man Hoven sure does suck. Really liked this vid Ricky!
Man, speedrunners are something else. Finding these random areas where you can jump off of that look absolutely no different to anywhere else just makes me speechless. How much time did it take for them to find this stuff? It boggles the mind! Also wow, I didn't expect hearing the Tarmac Trouble music from Toy Story 2 at 22:05. That's a nostalgia trip. And yet it oddly fits Ratchet and Clank XD
It's awesome watching these videos, I always did try finding something different in each playthrough, the planets felt so big as a kid and even grown up now, that they were begging to be explored. That's what I always liked about the classic games and the future games too.
Interesting that Orxon wasn't chosen, given the Clank "jump" and Ratchet's chase (although if this video is just NG+, that one's a lot easier). The final boss here is very hard, given your health. Always a tense watch.
@@flochforster88 Orxon 1 is a complete cakewalk in NG+, Orxon 2 is semi difficult for sure, maybe in the top 5 hardest planets in the run. It's always just been a test of the players movement and it's never been much different to that. Nowhere close to the hardest though i'd say
if ratchet's weapons could "crit" as well, you could guarantee you hit the crit spot every time, and those crits did considerably more damage than the regular turret shot, there might be a way for a more consistent ship fight. Not faster than the turret's crit rng, but just consistent
Maybe there's a way to get it to bob lower than normal in order to make sure the critical hits are easier? Or a glitch to freeze the ship close enough to you so you can more precisely aim the hits?
Questions like these are what makes progress! Progress is what makes ThaRixer videos! :D @ThaRixer !! Pulling this out of my armpits here; maybe the timing of the bobbing of the ship as one enters the turret has an effect on ultimate positioning during turret fight
I did slope intercepts on the ramp test thing in R&C2's Insomniac Museum a lot, I always called it "Leapfrogging" because the way I did it made Ratchet move in a way that resembled a jumping frog. But, I noticed that once I reached the ramp marked as a 70° angle, I couldn't slope intercept from it because it was too steep.
This channel is a delight, I'd heard about you from CrystalFissure and his Spyro content, but only recently started checking out your videos. I'm not a speedrunner, but I do love to watch speedruns of games that I enjoy and I do at least incorporate speedrunning tricks in my own casual playthroughs if I can. But seeing the history and breakdown of how tech and routes were discovered is just absolutely fascinating! I wish every game that I've watched a speedrun for had a guy like you to compile all the history and research for them. You're amazing man
I’m not a speed runner, but I hated shooting that ship when I was a kid (I still play it now for fun) but I always shot at the turrets on the ship thinking they were weak points/targets to hit.
I'm not a huge speedrun fan, I've only ever done one speedrun of a game and that was sub one hour RE3 Remake on NG+ and it was just for the challenge to complete the game quickly and I only did it once. But I do really love these videos, years of tech and discoveries and rivalries condensed nicely into a well-edited and commentated format is fantastic
All I can say is man I freaking love the R&C games. There's just nothing like them and I played through all of the PS2 games tens of times because as a kid I obviously didn't get to buy a new game whenever I wanted unlike today. Glad to know the series has a proper speedrunning scene cause that's going to give me a lot of footage to watch
Not sure why they just wouldn't make two subcategories for the game, PS2 vs PS3 remaster, when it's clear that the differences between them warrants a separation.
They're not that different. The loads on PS2 are slower, one piece of movement tech doesn't work, and maybe two other small things but PS3 is just a faster and better PS2. Nowadays PS2 for speedrunning is seen as a meme. Same goes for ratchet 3 and deadlocked. Ratchet 2 got a board split but that's because there's differences that matter
I agree but it won't happen because it would be a lot of work - they'd have to do that for every version, hell, every PATCH of every game just to be fair... it'd make everything a lot more messy and confusing looking for newcomers as well I guess.
This video should be told of a story of how you and your friends speedran a game together instead if as a documentary style, external narrator. (I have the exact same criticism of summoning salt and that mike tyson game)
We need more videos like these Rixer! ♥ Me as a HARDCORE RAC FAN who even listens to RAC Soundtrack in his car everything bout RAC is just so gorgreous to watch. GJ Mate

it's always such an impressive moment when the speed running documentary has a moment in it that says, "and then things changed when *_I_* came along."
Speedrunning (as much as I love to watch runs) is so beyond me, I admire runners greatly. Aside from that, your posture is IMMACULATE. I could only hope to attain such posture. 😂🥺🙏
Hearing that Tekken 5 OST come in on this video makes me happy. But, the moment I heard the Yugioh FM Library Menu track, I had to give you props. Your videos always has great content and the music choices just also matches.
Wait. The planet buster turret weak spots weren’t a commonly known thing? I swear I realised this on my first play though as a kid, when it was originally released. The reticle (spelling?) turns red whenever it’s over a turret. You know, the classic obvious weak spot thing? Damn! If I’d been aware of the speed running community earlier I could’ve contributed something! Can’t prove anything now.
It's kind of impressive to me how much this level's run has changed. It had both the most difficult trick to pull off and horrible RNG, but also didn't have them at the same time. The fact it also just generally went back and forth between being easy then frustrating, then easy then frustrating again.

if ratchet's weapons could "crit" as well, you could guarantee you hit the crit spot every time, and those crits did considerably more damage than the regular turret shot, there might be a way for a more consistent ship fight.
I love the tekken ost throughout your videos
@@Alex-ex8oball speedruning is seen as a meme 😂 the most famous speedrunner of all time is simpleflips
Glad to see you take part in this one! Man, the MGS ost always hit me unprepared.
Great video, as always. I love the detail in which you explain all of this and that you give credit to all the runners. Keep up the good work :)
This video should be told of a story of how you and your friends speedran a game together instead if as a documentary style, external narrator. (I have the exact same criticism of summoning salt and that mike tyson game)
I WOKE UP LATE NIGHT BALLIN‘
COUNTIN THESE HUNDREDS TO THE THOUSAN‘S
I’m loving the Budokai Options theme at the end of these videos
Never did I think I would be watching a Speedrun of ratchet and clank but this s*** was fun
We need more videos like these Rixer! ♥ Me as a HARDCORE RAC FAN who even listens to RAC Soundtrack in his car everything bout RAC is just so gorgreous to watch. GJ Mate
I’ve just found your channel but every video I’ve watched I’ve loved. You do a great job documenting and explaining everything in all your videos. Keep it up. I still have many more videos to get through but they’re a treat🙏🏼
I hear you with that Toy Story 2 airport music 🔥
I found your channel back when you did the Jak3 speedrun at GDQ as it was one of the best-commentated things I'd seen outta that event. I've been addicted to your videos ever since
Ricky's videos are always a treat
It's awesome how he records the history to such detail.
Im currently replaying the HD trilogy, Im onto all of those mysteries haha
18:03 what an intro 😎👌
I played this game back in the day and this kind of speed-run history is fascinating. Your Orxon video was great too.
0:00 It was the BEST video i've ever seen on TH-cam
Needed this after hearing about the queen dying. Now I get to have two good days back to back. Thanks Ricky

cmon, thats someone's mother sister aunt and cousin... its very hard for that 1 man today.
my favorite part of these speedrun essays is when the op goes "AND THAT PERSON... WAS ME. 😎"
it's always such an impressive moment when the speed running documentary has a moment in it that says, "and then things changed when *_I_* came along."
0:26 - child me would also claim this is the worst planet casually ever made, in any games ever.
Quite the feat actually, nice work Insomniac 👏
Feels hella good listening to mgs2 and tekken soundtracks whilst you talk in depth about speed run lore. Cheers
Speedrunning (as much as I love to watch runs) is so beyond me, I admire runners greatly.
Aside from that, your posture is IMMACULATE. I could only hope to attain such posture. 😂🥺🙏
At break at work glad I have enough time to watch this in full. Absolutely love your content Ricky glad I found you when I did
Hearing that Tekken 5 OST come in on this video makes me happy. But, the moment I heard the Yugioh FM Library Menu track, I had to give you props. Your videos always has great content and the music choices just also matches.
bro ur ratchet 1 videos are truely the most captivating of any rac vids out there
Love that you used Tekken music
"Another Masterpiece" - Dunkey
Eudora has to be my favorite music from this game
As soon as I heard the Gran Turismo 4 music in the background I knew this video was going to be great. Amazing sound track selections man!!!
Right when he said, "You think you've seen bad quality before? ...Brace yourselves." the video IMMEDIATELY switched to an ad for World of Warcraft.
It's kind of impressive to me how much this level's run has changed. It had both the most difficult trick to pull off and horrible RNG, but also didn't have them at the same time. The fact it also just generally went back and forth between being easy then frustrating, then easy then frustrating again.
SNEEPY @ 25:27 🤣 This is Hoven in a nutshell 💀
I think this was the first game I have tried to MULTIPLE times like beat levels as quick as I could over and over, like I was probably in like 4th grade but seeing these brings back that feeling lol
It's crazy to hear the name Raikaru, I met the lad playing Runescape and thought it was insane when he told me had a GDQ run.
Always happy when Ricky drops
Not even a minute in and we are greeted to Gran Turismo 4 music. Especially awesome since I've been playing that game recently
