Great overview I would have loved one of these back in the late 80's but could never afford one all the best :)

I used to have one of those. it came with 600Hz CW filter , but main shaft encoder start to skip , so I replaced with encoder made for FT-990 , I had to cut shaft a little shorter , but worked well . Good radio. I wish if I still had one. AG6JU

This feels like it should be skipping but it is working fine.Bourns do a very cheap encoder that works so if it starts to annoy me i will just replace it.Thanks for visiting the channel.

I've two of these; one with the remote faceplate kit, and the other with the optional metal case. WA3RA

I didn’t know they did a remote faceplate kit for the 747, thanks for visiting the channel.

My 747 has been a pretty good performing radio. It's been modified for QRP operation since the radio tends to heat up quickly during long QSO's.

That’s a good idea especially now these things are aged…mine still needs a bit of a tidy up but i will get on with it someday.. thanks for visiting.

Daily driver. My Elmer gave it to me. Just got licensed in 21'. Very handy for camping. And I use it a lot in the shack because its Solid State. I have a small fleet of Kenwood TS-520/820's. And they are like a Cadillac where the 747 is a Beetle.
Most of my radio use is just for short burst so its just easier to work the SS 747. I hate powering up tubes for short bursts. The 747 covers the whole HF on receive. Which is great for camping. Can tune in Alex Jones and other late night shows somewhere in the HF. And I hear tell its the cats ass on 11 meters. Negatives. The VFO has some sort of silly ratchet device. It has line level audio out on the back but not line in. And no VOX.

Apart from the suspect plastic chassis they do work quite well. The TS-520 is an excellent radio and one which i should never have parted with. Thanks for visiting the channel. M3VWN
