Authoritarian expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat and I had this conversation BEFORE the events at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania, but the facts remain the same if not more poignant now. The shock and awe we’re seeing is a tactic to distract us from what this party plans to do to our country, our democracy, and to anyone who doesn’t pledge absolute fealty or fit into their limited box of “acceptable” Americans. What happened at the Trump rally changes nothing about who Trump is or what he will do to this country if he and his party gain power. If anything, Ruth’s warnings of how a strongman comes to power, are more dire now. We are witnessing the playbook of authoritarianism unfold, we can not simply go along.

In 1935, Nazi Germany passed two radically discriminatory pieces of legislation inspired by DEMOCRAT laws: the Reich Citizenship Law and the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor. Together, these were known as the Nuremberg Laws, and they laid the legal groundwork for the persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust and World War II.
When the Nazis set out to legally disenfranchise and discriminate against Jewish citizens, they weren’t just coming up with ideas out of thin air.
In particular, Nazis admired the DEMOCRAT Jim Crow-era laws that discriminated against Black Americans and segregated them from white DEMOCRATS, and they debated whether to introduce similar segregation in Germany.
Yet they ultimately decided that it wouldn’t go far enough.
“One of the most striking Nazi views was that DEMOCRAT Jim Crow was a suitable racist program in the United States because American Blacks were already oppressed and poor,” he says. “But then in Germany, by contrast, where the Jews (as the Nazis imagined it) were rich and powerful, it was necessary to take more severe measures.”
Because of this, Nazis were more interested in how the DEMOCRATS. had designated Native Americans, Filipinos and other groups as non-citizens even though they lived in the U.S. or its territories. These models influenced the citizenship portion of the Nuremberg Laws, which stripped Jewish Germans of their citizenship and classified them as “nationals.”

Gish gallop is a bit broader than that, gish gallops don't necessarily have to be lies just rapid fire points.

Eliminating Birthright citizenship scares me. I am 4th generation American and my husband may be 6th yet I worry by the way that is worded that Trump might send him back to Africa.
You are right to be worried. Doing that endangers everyone, literally. We are all descended from immigrants, so they could apply that to anyone they want to get rid of. Being white won’t save people, if someone has a grudge, or wants their stuff. This will get horrible on day 1.

My family hit dirt in The New World from off the boarding ramp of the Mayflower. My great great great great and so on, grandfather was related to the first Governor of Maryland COLONY. We were mercant mariners that sided with the colonists against the King. We outfitted our merchant ships for war with the King of England's Armada. We lost ALL our ships, but damaged the King's Armada.We lost everything, so we went West, into the wilderness to regain our wealth. Some of us landed in the area that would eventually become Idaho.EVERY GENERATION of my family had atleast one sole in the military. This is an excellent interview. Here is what I want more of: everyone who sees this crisis says the solution is to vote. That is true, but we need more tips on what to do, what to say, how to say it, how to be more pro-active and organized so that when it comes time to vote we will have done ALL WE CAN to get the outcome we must have. I would like to know which races in key battleground states we should be supporting, for example. I live in a reliably blue state and already I see people saying “well, my vote won’t matter because we are blue anyways.”…We need to understand that there are two parallel paths to electing a president: the popular vote and the electoral college. We have to fight and perform well on BOTH fronts at the same time. We can’t make the same mistake we made in 2016. Thank you so very much for having Ruth Ben-Ghiat on…. We need to hear this message!

The term for when someone overwhelms an opponent with a huge amount of arguments with no regard for the truth or validity of the arguments is called a “gish gallop”. Trump does this every time he speaks so it’s a challenge, but one would think that the press would have gotten a handle on how to deal with this given the many years they’ve been covering him. If you notice, many of the Republican politicians use this strategy also and then just keep talking in order to bulldoze over the interviewer. Then on the off chance they are shut down, they cry victim just like Trump. They are abhorrent people.

Ive spent 29 years (and counting) in military service. Ive completed 19 years of civilian law enforcement. Couple that with being born and raised in the Magnolia Projects that used to be in uptown New Orleans and you get a mixture of a strong, patriotic black man that will NOT back down to ANY dictatorship. I spent my blood, sweat, tears and years fighting these exact ideologies, dictators, and authoritarians around the world and I'll be damned if I lay down while it happens here in my own country...

A lot of American citizens who aren't immigrants don't realize how little proof of citizenship they actually have. Just creating the kind of society that requires you to have citizenship papers on your person at all times will mean a radically different America

As a European, I think there are very few people that do not carry their identity card with them.
It's common; it's just a plastic card in my wallet.
Needed when I go to the commune, for receiving signed letters, for getting something done at the bank, etc.
It's just normal...
I myself have 2: 1 of my birth country, 1 of my permission to stay in my current country.
So, 1 ID card, 1 permission card. Just plastic in my wallet.
@@timotheusvanesch3959 we typically have a state id(usually driver's license) , birth certificate and social security card. But people typically only have state ID on thier person. None of these actually counts as proof of citizenship. Passports count as proof of citizenship but are expensive and not accessible for many natural born citizens.
People are irrational in general and worse when they are scared. That seems to be a big part of why the worst of history repeats itself on top of ignorance.
We need to uphold the constitution.
But we also need a Constitution restricting Corporations.
I think thats the next American Revolution. Our constitution preserved and protected our rights from the government - we need to be protected from all Authorities, perhaps a Constitution that applies to all leadership/Authority to ensure the power of all free Americans.
