I don't think most people in America realize how fragile their democracy is. Once a country shifts to authoritarian rule, it can take centuries to overthrow it.
I think that's because many people see the fight for democracy and freedom more traditionally and externally; as fighting against a foreign threat/power. But at this stage in power for the US, while also considering its political landscape thanks to Trump, the likelihood of foreign takeover is becoming overshadowed by the erosion of democracy from within. You have an entire party working at all levels; local, state, and federal, to suppress votes, gerrymander, cast doubt on the validity of elections themselves and indeed all institutions (judicial, military, education, health, science, etc.) that are fundmental to this country, disguised as an ironic and insidiously named "America First" agenda for all the faux "patriots". All in a last gasp attempt to install their leader and his party of loyalists. The results and damage of which are still immeasurable from the last election + insurrection + fake elector scheme.
I think people need to remember that just because we are not in an all out war with a foreign power, the fight to maintain democracy, within our own borders, is still as important as ever, if not more so. It's not something that is a natural state for human tribes, it is something that must be actively maintained and protected from human corruption and greed for power. The likes of which has consumed the Republican party at an accelerated speed, thanks to the combination of religious zealotry/agenda, cowardice, and a willing and desperate cult leader, solely out to save himself from accountability for a career of criminality. The country is at a new frontier in the fight for democracy, one in which Trump repeatedly uses divisive and vitriolic rhetoric against fellow Americans (of both parties) that don't "Tim Scott" themselves to him, this is not a time to be indifferent or complacent.

I don't think these people want democracy anymore. When is the last time you heard one of them defend it? When is the last time you heard anyone deny that they tried to dismantle it on Jan 6? They have embraced autocracy and are all in. They don't think very far ahead because in very little time they will be victimized by their new leaders just as badly. Guns? We require people to care about accountability for those in power even when a monstrous clown like Trump isn't threatening the world's stability. Ask your friends and family if they want to live in a country like Russia, where freedom is reserved for the top few who support the leader. If they don’t, then they should then go ask their friends and start a chain reaction on a very simple question. I urge you to reconsider. I've been looking forward to it since early 2023 and it seems to do the job right, like in Argentina for example. The first Trump presidency was plagued by bad staff choices, this time it's gonna be much smoother. Also no Democrats sabotaging his work like the last time. In Mar, 2019, a woman takes the stage at an event hosted by Steve Bannon and calls for a Trump dictatorship.
“Never in my life did I think I would like to see a dictator,” the woman told the crowd. “But if there’s going to be one, I want it to be Trump.” Bannon then clapped and smiled.
People who have seen this clip were shocked and appalled. Not only does the woman claim that she never thought she would agree with a dictatorship crushing the U.S., she fully supports the idea of Trump being that dictator, and single-handedly ruling over the nation, with complete immunity, like his idol Pooopin.
While the woman’s words alone should strike fear into your heart for the fate of our country, the audience’s response is the most telling.
There was not a moment of concern on many of the attendees’ faces. Instead, many of the attendees, like Bannon, were grinning from ear to ear as they applauded the outrageous idea of elevating Trump to a dictator.
The woman’s comment and the crowd’s reaction is a serious cause for concern.
Why continue as a democracy when we can go the way of Russia&Venezuela?
And these very same people have the audacity to call themselves "freedom loving patriots."

No, plenty of people paid attention in history class. All the stuff that's going on right now is _terrifying_ to normal people. Republican policies are incredibly unpopular and led to immense blue victories in 2022, as well as absolutely massive Democratic overperformance in basically every special election since. I'm in Wisconsin, the purplest of purple states, and our Supreme Court election went blue by _11 points_ and led to us just dismantling our gerrymanders, which will shatter the Republican stranglehold on our legislature and probably put some more blue representatives in the House.

this blueprint was laid out =years= ago, it had its own page on the .gov website under 45.. it was called 'govt reorganization plan' or similar. this blueprint was very clear -- to break up govt and sell it off, privatize everything, remove language having to do with human rights, safety net, even education, on and on... it kept referring to citizens as almost commodities, and the first pages were openly about turning the govt into a 'business'.. it was long, and detailed.

Can a history expert tell what the proper way is to deal with (a) active fascist operatives like this, and (b) their corrupt/brainwashed supporters? How did countries deal with them after fascism was overthrown in their countries? What can be done in America to dismantle this threat?
It can only be beaten by giving pro-democracy candidates an overwhelming mandate at the polls. Without the leadership, and with their dreams of revenge and power shattered by voters, the followers should start waking up.
Not an expert but an avid observer. It seems to me that it requires action on many fronts, just as the anti-democratic forces are acting on many fronts.
Campaigns to get people registered & to vote, campaigns & lawsuits for voting rights, strategies to protect elections from corrupt interference.
Legal actions by the DOJ, state AGs, civil society groups & individuals. For justice & accountability.
Community work, bringing people together to empower them to take action on issues they care about.
In the long-term, building a society with better education, less inequality & more regard & care for others.
Strengthening democratic institutions & guardrails of democracy.
There’s no magic bullet, it’s a lot of work in a lot of areas over a long period of time. Every small effort matters.
Regarding addressing the MAGA followers. The experts make a lot of the same points.
People in general respond more to people they trust, not to politicians or government leaders.
MAGA people will not respond to facts, evidence or reason. And most certainly not to argument.
What is driving them is deeper- a powerful emotional identification gained by exploiting powerful emotions of fear, anger, hatred, & the desire for connection.
So, to break through is not easy. It needs a relationship of trust.
The experts advise, if it’s possible, to keep a respectful relationship going. Reminding the person you care about them & respect them. Building trust & connection-being honest but not confrontational.
Over time you can then plant seeds- ask questions, raise issues. The person will reject & reject but eventually a thought or question will take hold & develop over time in their mind.
The people who’ve got out of MAGA say it takes a lot of time, it’s hard to get over the pride & shame involved in realising they’ve been lied to & exploited. They need connection & support through that, not humiliation.

Not a Trump fan, but as a former high-level government employee (retired), I know exactly what he's referring to. An elected government's albatross are the bureaucrats who refute directives from elected leadership, who stymy policy implementation, who lie, who conceal, based on ideological opposition. I don't think the average person understands how serious the problem is, for both sides, and that you absolutely do need your bureaucrats and department heads to be on board with government directives in order for them to be successfully rolled out. Leadership takes the blame when promises are broken, but quite often it's not his or her fault. Whether it's Trump or Biden, this problem needs to be addressed for the betterment of us all.
