Thanks for your compliment, I shall give houdini its fair share has it's a team work: Good tool makes good art (if you can wield them). My advice to learn, do it for the fun of doing it, like a game. Start small and do it often, and be happy with finding a way even if you don't push it to shading / rendering.
you can create uv with uvproject and use sidefix labs simple_baker node to export it as a texture, or do a simple render with a front facing camera and an emissive material so that you don't need any light in your scene.
