The opening two lines of this song are such a great play on words
"Do you feel like a chain store
    Practicaly floored" (Practically flawed)

I always thought this was the band at their most interesting. Although I grew up in the Britpop era, I was never much into their chart-bothering pop singles, but when they got bored and went into more alternative and grungy territory... much better. The self-titled album and '13' are really good.

    • @andyc6542

To be fair, this is very much a Britpop sounding song - pure pop record, and a fantastic one at that.

My favourite Blur track is Out Of Time. Their ‘Britpop era output leaves me cold. Alex James…what a cheese making tool he is

They didn't get bored, the first album was an exploitative studio produced album and at the time the studio forced them to tour the US which they hated. They were so disillusioned by the whole experience that they decided to refuse anymore input from the record label and focus their efforts into making records that were unmistakingly and specifically British for the UK audience. From that point on you can argue Blur became the most influential band of the era, more so than the at the time more popular Oasis who lets face it looking back were a one trick pony making cookie cutter nostalgia pop music with little to no variety. I would argue Pulp did more to move pop music forward than Oasis who basically just ripped off bands like the Charlatans.

Great song, great reaction! I love this album. For me, it's their best. Check out Tender for a very different type of song. But the album worths a full listen. As you liked this song, I suggest, besides Gorillaz, that you take a look at Coxon's solo work too. Especially Happiness in magazines and Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, two excellent albums. Found out this channel recently and I'm loving it. Great content, cool reflections and reactions. Thanks for the good work.

That’s a real nice solo in that song. I think they were the best out of the popular 90’s Britpop bands. Clearly more interesting than Oasis.

Definitely more creative than Oasis, you can see that how Graeme Coxson has continued to work other bands and Damon went on to create Gorillaz.

When you look back how many Oasis songs stand up today? Song 2 became the most used piece of music in sport, The Universal is used in adverts around the World to give a couple of examples of Blur's long term appeal.

Their most Kinks inspired albums are their second, Modern Life is Rubbish and third, Parklife. There are some Ray Davies style suburban vignettes and songs about London.

Such a great band, for mine they were or are great. So creative and inventive. Graeme Coxson, Damon Albarn, Alex James brilliant. Listen to the bass line in this song just holding things together. Check out Chemical world and Beetlebum to. Also interested to see how you guys would react to Parklife.

I think at the time, Blur knew they were done with Brit-Pop. They were actually looking at American lo-fi groups at the time, for inspiration. This is great album. I saw them at the Roseland Ballroom back in the day. They even did my favorite Blur song, from Parklife "This is a Low". I know they did "Tender" which should have been a bigger hit. Thanks for a good pick!

Blur definitely got better after 1997, I would say. I wasn't much of a fan of the stuff that went up against Oasis (although I'll accept Parklife was a solid album) but from Beetlebum onwards, they turned into a very good band.
I think you lads may like some Supergrass. Moving or Richard III would be good places to start. 👍
