I recently updated my editing software, so welcome to a new era of fewer pixelated images and less ghosting! In the previous versions, when I would shrink certain images they would get kinda pixel-y and bad, so hopefully this video will look noticeably more crisp and shiny. Let me know if you do see a difference with the visuals.
(Ironically, I was dealing with an episode with some of the most smudgy screencaps, lol. Maybe I need to buy a new Season 7 DVD.)
I love you
Looking good! Video looks sharp, keep up the good work!
I would LOVE a video about how you make videos
Just curious what were you editing on and what did you switch to?
I said it before and I'll say it again. Do the video on picking the best segments from each non-treehouse of horror anthology segment. Here's how I may actually do it
Instead of a top 10 or 20 list, you'll review each non-treehouse of horror anthology episode and its segments and "pick" the greatest segment in that episode.
So, e.g. Season 8: The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase. My favorite segment of that one is the Chief Wiggum segment.
Then move to the next one, review all three segments, pick the best one and repeat until you get to the latest one at the time. (Season 32: Now Museum, Now You Don't)
You can count short 1-minute segments like Homer as King Solomon but I would recommend not to count those short segments and only count the three main ones.
I think it’s crazy that Steamed Hams is so perfectly written that, even having seen it meme’d to death, it’s still legitimately still super funny to me. It’s just the perfect comedy set up, and perfectly cast with Chalmers and Skinner. I love how unnecessarily perceptive and confrontational Chalmers is the entire time, while Skinner just keeps snowballing the most pointless lie ever. The Aurora Borealis bit genuinely is lightning in a bottle, I have no idea how anyone even came up with that.
‘Aurora Borealis?? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized ENTIRELY within your kitchen?!’
‘Yes!’
‘…may I see it?’
‘…no.’
possibly one of the funniest eschanges in comedy history in general. If I ever came up with it myself I would not believe myself the next morning

Before Steamed Hams blew up, to date, this is still my favourite Simpsons episode. Always a fun watch
The tall guy in the car always killed me haha
It's funny, I always thought Steamed Hams felt so un-Simpsons to me. It's a style of humor that you just don't see very often in the show. But I've seen it hundreds of times at this point because my friends will not let old memes die. That being said, I do love this episode dearly.
Weird, it never really did much for me. It's a really funny episode, to be sure, but there are just so many other episodes that I prefer over this one.
Was there any doubt that 13:13 is number one? It's probably the most memorable segment of the episode.
Indeed
My favourite line from the Burns/Smithers segment is Smither's iconic line:
*"I'm allergic to bee stings, they cause me to...Die."*
Like you can tell Smithers intended to explain his allergy in more detail but the stress of the situation made him condense it to just *"Die."*
It's also the fact that his reaction is more one of embarrassment than fear. Like, "what an inconvenience to put Mr Burns through".
@@alexpotts6520 And Mr. Burns' *"Oh quite impossible."* at the prospect of actually pedalling himself is hilarious. Like trying to smack the Bee away that might kill Smithers seems the more reasonable choice for him.
I liked the fact that Burns shouted old-fashioned insults towards Smithers. Though it's kind of weird that in an episode from the earlier seasons Smithers didn't have any major issues witht the bees Burns was raising after he sold the nuclear plant to some Germans
Fun fact: This episode gave the idea to the writers to do a spin-off that focus only on the secondary and minor characters outside the Simpsons family, but got scrapped. I kind of want them to keep the idea within the show for like of a episode per season, like a Treehouse of horror.
At least we got The Simpsons Spinoff Showcase, especially Chief Wiggum, P.I.
@@ravenwilder4099The segment with Moe and the Love-matic Grandpa is underrated.
I wonder if Jims ever did a video on the Spinoff Showcase episode.
That would’ve been awesome.
They do spotlight episodes frequently enough that I'm not sure it would be necessary
SKINNY BOIIII@@ravenwilder4099
I've always kind of liked that one about the boiled porks.
With Headmaster Stinger and Chief of the School Board Charmings.
The joke about the solar eclipse being contained in the bathroom is hilarious.
Such a classic scene.
Are you from the Berenstain universe?
"So, Stinger, I've arrived. Regardless of your instructions.."
"Well, Chief of the School Board Charmings, salutations! I trust you're inclined towards this indelible banquet?"
"Bah..."
This is a very Shelbyville kind of statement...
@@MrBanjob you're just jealous of our delicious turnip juice!
Go drown your sorrows in your cursed lemonade!
I think the joke at 3:06 is pretty funny. My guess is that it's about kids playing in the water after a fire hydrant malfunctions, but instead it's a malfunctioning mailbox spewing a fountain of letters.
Pretty sure it's that I thought it was pretty obvious
You cant just describe exactly what happens in the scene add than add that its "your guess"
Skinner’s mother screaming “HELP! HEEEELLLLP!” at the end is one of the funniest soundbites in the entire series
That combined with Skinner's grin and thumbs up is one of the all time great Simpsons moments.
Also the firetruck
I think the lisa story is pretty important to the structure of episode. It helps to make the episode feel like you're seeing a day in springfield from different perspectives, and not just a bunch of little shorts. Those random characters had to help because you knew everyone else was busy.
Steamed Hams has to be number 1, but i live everything with Nelson and the Very Tall Man. In a format bending episode, it almost feels like this is the segment that most threatens to break the reality if the show, that the Very Tall Man is almost this sort of spectre of a man who refuses to laugh along and who will respond to the cartoony antics around him with righteous indignation. He is the Lester, Eliza, and Frank Grimes to Nelson.
I like even just from his irritated note-by-note lecture at Nelson it's clear he has been through this crap over and over, that he is a very serious frustrated person stuck in a hiliariously lanky body with a goofy voice and driving a pitifullly missized car because he can't afford anything of greater dignity, and one 'Hah Hah!' was the absolutely final straw for him. Forget Ol' Grimey, this guy could be Nelson's Sideshow Bob. :P
The most overthinking done by a person in the comments section for this one. And you're completely right.
I will say, I think Eddies one line in the Burger Scene is all he needs. His simple reply of "shakes!? don't know what you're gettin'" is somehow incredibly funny to me - it adds to the silly dialogue, but also keeps true to Eddies character of not talking much.
Ahh... the shakes line is seriously one of my most quoted lines. Perfect line for Eddie.
Also who can't forget about Wiggun asking " Do they have Krusty’s Partially Gelatinated Non-Dairy Gum-Based Beverage
Didn't he also say that "they must of sprung up over night" when talking they are talking about McDonalds? I always thought that bit was funny
@@scarletwitch616 oh dang, you are totally right! A great line too, but apparently not as memorable to me :(
The Gum trilogy may not be the most exciting, but I love Marge's response.
Lisa: "MOM!!! Someone threw gum in my hair."
Marge: "Are you sure? Maybe it's just shampoo. That washes right out."
I do not know why it tickles me so. But the thought of someone squirting their shampoo into a trash can is just funny. The absurdity of even thinking it may be shampoo is just hilarious to me.
Also Marge needing to specify that it washes right out as though thats not the point of shampoo
Moes reaction to Snake just simply hopping the bar and grabbing the cash out of the register kills me because like. There was literally nothing Moe could do, its as if he thought up the perfect way to deal with a robbery scenario that didn't involve actually protecting his money
also the subtlety of Apu probably just jackhammering that woman in like 3 seconds kills me.
So if I'm being honest, the Professor Frink segment had me laughing so hard the first time I saw it that I missed the first 5 minutes of the next show. THAT kind of laughter. Looking back though, I would have to put Cletus in the top spot. It's like "Who's on first" - comedically perfect.
The thing about the Pulp Fiction parody with Wiggum’s story is it still works without having seen the movie. I’m sure I’m not the only one who grew up with the episode and I always enjoyed these scenes. When I eventually saw the film as a teen, the segment obviously becomes much funnier because you get the spot-on references but also much darker because of what it implies about Herman. Do you think they ever considered including a gimp in the segment?
I saw The Shinning before seeing The Shining, and it helped me enjoy the movie far more than I could otherwise.
@@palaceofwisdom9448 I'm guilty of that with the Nightmare on Elm Street parody.
Dedicated to "The Adventures Of Ned Flanders" for making all this possible.
hens love roosters
geese love ganders
everyone else loves Ned Flanders
"Not me!"
Everyone who counts loves Ned Flanders
That's the one that is my favorite, and it's not even part of the 22 shorts
Maybe Frink's segment is ranked low, but it made you laugh before, and now it made you think, and in the end, that's all the segment would have wanted from you.
great video!
a video on all the side characters that went missing over the years would be cool. for ex- the Winfield's, Ruth powers, etc.
The Winfields are definitely one of the weirdest bits of early Simpsons.
Like a Reversed Second character spotlight?
Fun Fact: There was a lengthy segment involving Marge getting taken hostage that was shown on commercial previews and announced in that month's Bongo Comics but was never included in the final broadcast version.
does the deleted scenes for that episode have the Marge scene?
I don't think it's either a fact or fun.
There's also a deleted scene with Ralph and Krusty on a plane in the original promo. Its on TH-cam
@@nousukasIt might not be fun, but it is definitely a fact
Wasn't it just a fantasy Marge was imagining? That why she's kind of annoyed when Lisa asks her about recycling a can
Thanks for the shoutout, broski! Really appreciate it, and really dig your rank. It kept me entertained like the shirkaday I am! :)
Thanks! I enjoyed your rankings, it ended up making me rethink the Bumblebee Man segment and question if I was underrating it before!
When Bill Oakley was asked about the Steamed Hams meme blowing up he said something like he was surprised so many people loved it. I'm one of the people who, from the first time I saw the episode all the way back when it premiered, thought it was one of the funniest segments ever put on the show, and it really is an example of perfect comedy writing.
After seeing it premiere I told my friend I'm getting a steamed ham at McDonald's

Based on this top 10, can we all agree that this is Hank Azaria’s best episode?
This video does look better than normal, it just started and I was already wondering why that makes sense!
The tall man segment gets me every time. “Do you find something comical about my appearance?” And the way Nelson squirms while the tall man is palming his head lol
That's always been my favorite.
The Bumble Bee Man narrating his day in Spanish and somehow me as a kid being able to understand everything he said despite not knowing the language, was the highlight of that episode for me.
What makes me laugh out loud while watching this segment is how the Bumblebee man is shouting poorly-translated Spanish as his house falls apart, such as "Naranjas en la cabeza!" (oranges on the head!), "una candelabra precariosa!" (a precarious chandelier!) and of course, "¿Donde esta mi tequila?" (Where is my tequila?)
It's very physical comedy
As an Spanish-speaker who grew up with the Simpsons' Neutral Spanish dub I was amused when I saw the original version, with all the broken Spanish. I saw in a video made by Max Power, a Simpson-focused TH-camr from Colombia, that the Spanish was written by a member from the show's staff that was of Hispanic descent but she knew very little of actual Spanish, so you had things like "Woodpeckero" which was changed in the Spanish dub as the correct "Pájaro carpintero". I always thought the sketch was more of a direct parody to Roberto Bolaños' shows like El Chapulín Colorado, but as someone who grew up watching things like El Chavo del 8, the slapstick wasn't as extreme as in the Bumblebee Man sequence
@@MandrakeHorse weirdly enough, the Mexican dub corrected all of the dialogue, but the "naranjas en la cabeza" and "¿Dónde está mi tequila?" were kept intact. The part with the chandelier was corrected to, "Este candelabro es frágil", a much more accurate thing to say in Spanish
Surprised to see Bumblebee Man so high. If I remember Jim’s said in his review that the segment was a bit of a dud. And not the type of “dud” that Bart got either. Interesting how interests change over time.
I rank the 22 short films by "would I watch an episode of this"
So an episode of steamed hams? There's a few episodes of that
Cletus just bumbling around? Sure
A medical quack drama staring Dr Nick? Absolutely
I personally have a soft spot for the Lisa story, especially the ending part. It feels like a perfect encapsulation of a lot of her character (the frustration with other people's incompetence, the desire to look grown-up, the sensitivity to peer pressure), the slapstick with the bees is good, and the escalation of random-ass side characters to give bad advice is hilarious. Also, the kindly barber with the bald-spot fakeout is the perfect mixture of misdirection for good comedy and sweetness.
This is a nice way of looking at it.
Overall I just don't think the format of the episode really does much for a character like Lisa. It's great for the minor characters without much depth to them, that do one thing and do it well - they can have a sketch where they do their one thing, then move on before they outstay their welcome (Cletus would be a great example). Lisa really isn't that sort of character - she's much better suited as either the main character in a half-hour story, or as a source of wisdom/dropper of truth bombs dropping in to comment on another character's story arc.
@@alexpotts6520 True, but it would've been weird if she and Marge weren't there at all, and I think it was smart to give her one of the longer plots woven throughout, as it fits a little better with her being relatively more subdued and taking longer for things to escalate.
3:07 I always saw the kids dancing around the letters as a play on the classic gag of a fire hydrant breaking, splashing water into the air, and kids coming out to play in the water like a sprinkler.
I like that you used your traditional music cues to describe at most 90 seconds of screen time its a nice insane touch 👌
This is definitely one of my most unhinged music mixes, lol
(I originally tried to do 2 segments per track but the music continuing to run sounded weird to me)
‘Tales from Springfield’ is the spin-off we all deserved.
You took 14 minutes of my life and I want them back!
Oh, i'd only waste them anyway.
I adore the Cletus segment, honestly might beat steamed hams for me. I love steamed hams, but I think raw enjoyment might go to the slack jawed yokel.
For some reason, I find myself quoting Lovejoy's "dirty, sinful business" line on a daily basis.
It's so perfect for him. Like, a reverend who cared about his job would never talk like that, but it's Lovejoy, of course he isn't bothered about whether he's sinning.
We need a ranking of every joke in Last Exit To Springfield now.
I was always confused by Lisa's bald spot. If her skin is yellow, how is the bald spot white? It makes it look like her whole body is covered in fur, and would also have white skin underneath if you shaved it off... Even as a child that made no sense to me (nor did the lack or hairline, her and Bart just have spiky heads).
I'm unsure if I agree that she must be covered in fur, or if I want to justify it by saying that in the Simpsons universe combining all those hair gum cures really borks up your scalp?
You're not the first to suggest that the Simpsons kids have pelts.
I'm not sure what's confusing about it. It's a bald spot; no need to over-analyze it. Especially when the Simpson kids' hair never made any logical sense, so there's room for interpretation when it comes to portraying them without hair. It's a cartoon, not real life. Just enjoy it.
I think the idea is that skin underneath your hair is more pale because your hair blocks the sun, but instead of making it like a lighter shade of yellow or something they just made it white.
Her scalp hair is white because of no sun
This is the first time I noticed Don Brodka in the background of the very tall man laughing crowd.
That's right, Don Brodka.
From Try-N-Save security
uh-huh. Yeah. It's a shame I know.
Well, try to have a Merry Christmas

For a second I actually wasn't sure what you were gonna go with between numbers 1 and 2. Obviously Steamed Hams is the best and most iconic but Cletus' segment actually makes me laugh more so for a moment I thought it might actually be number 1. (This COULD be because I've seen Steamed Hams so many times at this point)
Cletus lives rent free like, " everyone who counts loves Ned Flanders, and Inflammable means flammable?!?". These are the things that make it so 80% of Americans will remember The Simpsons on their deathbed when the flashing meets the eyes.
The first time I saw Pulp Fiction it was at a movie club screening, and I recall laughing so much it made my throat hurt. But I didn't laugh just because of the movie and its dark humour, it was because I finally understood what the Simpsons were referencing! Kinda dissapointed a kid with a maze didn't show up to save Marcellus, but still a great film.
Really dissapointed about the donut's story being last, i've always preferred the emotional character arc of wiggum's donut over the comedy of the rest of the episode. 0/22
The Journey of the Donut is pretentious and am tired of the fans putting it on a pedestal!
Steamed Hams but in a ‘22 short films about Springfield’ ranking video
I know my favorite unsung joke in this was Cletus poking his head through the title card, saying "What's going on on this side?".
I'm shocked given how much repeat the Simpsons have done in plots, they've only technically done two other multi-pov stories that all connect in Trilogy of Error and that one in the cave. Unless I'm missing some others.
I'm surprised during the second Al Jean era they didn't do 22 more films on Springfield.
500 Keys from season 22 is similar
This was them testing for a Springfield spin-off that would have focusing on non-Simpsons characters. Later seasons have given many spotlight episodes to smaller characters so in a way they've done more "22 Short Films".
Kinda want to see a Summoning Salt parody where Kevin Macleod starts playing as Apu picks up the sign.
The craziest thing about the Pulp Fiction sequence is that they somehow already had the Herman character that perfectly stood in for Maynard.
5:00 i love that Dr Collossus is also in the background
I would put Nelson and the tall man higher on my list. I frequently quote "are you laughing at my automobile", his voice and the dialogue gets me every time.
This is one of the best episodes in my opinion.
Lisa getting a hair cut that doesn't blend with her skin and going "Wow! I finally look like a PERSON" always gets a laugh out of me x)
3:17 You should consider doing a video about "Simpsons cells you wish you could own." Lots of times people rank episodes, but idk if I've ever seen somebody rank their favorite frames from the Simpsons.
This episode might be the best one honestly

Yea, I usually go against the grain on these types of things, but steamed hams is literally a work of art that will live forever. It is number 1 and its not even close.
Gum in the hair is my favorite. Boo-urns indeed
I still say "What's goin' on on this side?" in my best Cletus voice as a general greeting to people. Nobody gets it. I've also been known to randomly sing his song, even all these years later.
Squeaky Voiced Teen for Simpsons Histories please. Although it colours quickly turn into a Simpsons Mysteries given how much his design changed during the golden age.
The peak of RealJims' videos is here. It's allllllllllllll downhill now.
"I'm.... an imposter. That man is the real TheRealJims!"
I gotta be honest, all the randoms bursting into the Simpsons’ house with so many pieces of different character specific, gum-in-hair comments is definitely top three for me. Bazooka Joe’s got deep pockets, absolutely legendary imo
I'm discombobulated, I'm edgy, I got ants in my pants... I need a calmative!
A perfectly cromulent video as always!
I’ve been watching the Simpson for several decades now, and have watched this episode countless times. However I could never discern what the 22 separate stories were, and that’s bugged me for years. Your video has finally put this to rest, and now everything’s coming up Millhouse.
You are shirkadaying on that Groundskeeper Willie video.
Not that you mentioned it Stam Hams is the culmination of what ever other short had into one. That just makes it all the more impressive and iconic.
#1 is obvious enough. It's the rest where the fun is. I've always enjoyed the Burns/Smithers bit. A lot of clever wordplay/archaic references and Burns being a callous asshole. The Barney/Moe stuff is fun, too. The Pulp Fiction references are whatever, but I do like the end with Herman and Kirk van Houten.
I absolutely loved Steamed Hams Seyyymour lol.
Why because you sure do know how to steam a ham🍔🍔🍔 even though he's from upstate New York and he's never heard that term.
2:12
Been thinking about that bald spot for a decade or more. What an odd decision that was.
Shouldn't the deleted Ralph and Krusty segment technically count as one of the 22 short films?
If Cromulent can become a word Shirkaday could. Not sure what it would mean.
FYI the Homer bit at #5 was partially a parody of a scene from Dumb & Dumber
3:07 I think it's supposed go be a joke about kids playing in the water of a busted fire hydrant
Before this episode, I never realized there was a chance that my skeleton could leap out my mouth and escape my body. I've worn one of those Pulp Fiction ball gags ever since.
Just got home from work.
Hope you mention the deleted Krusty and Ralph on a plane segment that we only know from a local station's commercial.
Also I think Josh Weinsteinpost part of the script
The summoning salt call-out was quite the pleasant surprise. Always love it when my favorite TH-camrs share in my other non-Simpsons Partially Gelatinated, Non-Dairy, Gum-Based interests
Steamed Hams has been my favourite short story since the first time I saw this episode. Skinner going into burning room and returning couple seconds later while YAWNING gets me every time.
Homer accidentally getting Maggie's onesie and her delighting in it gives me so much joy.
I'm personally still waiting for the day I can yell "I need a calmative!" in public without people actually taking me up on it for everybody's safety.
Steamed Hams but TheRealJims ranks the other 21 shorts too...wait a minute.
I think you were overly hard on Dr. Nick's segment. How the malpractice board doesn't return his cheery greeting. "But I cleaned them with my napkin!" That businesslike "hi, everybody" when he enters the operating room. The pastiche of ER's opening theme as background music. Skin failure, bonus eruptus and trans-dental electromicide. And why a golf cart motor specifically?
No major quibbles with the ranking, but I will take this opportunity to say that I would happily watch the living daylights out of a "Top 10 jokes from Last Exit to Springfield" video.
Do you find something comical about the way I rank the 22 Short Films About Springfield?
Everyone needs to rank the 22 Short Films About Springfield, even the very tall.
As a speedrunner myself I loved the summoning salt call out lol.
I must disagree, Eddie MAKES that segment. His "Huh, must've sprung up overnight" and "Don't know what you're getting" really sells the dismissive provincialism of Springfield which is the main onus of the humour in that segment. Being that standoffishly riled at things which are commonplace in the real world was fucking hilarious.
#11
I seem to always say "youre going to give yourself skin failure," whenever someone is telling me that they dont feel good but dont really know what is going on.
(And when ur wife and stepdaughter u live with are hypochondriacs, you get to say this A LOT)
I would really love to see you make a Top 10 or 20 Simpsons Guest Stars. You could even separate the list into two categories: celebrities playing themselves and celebrities playing original characters!
My favorite will always be the very tall man with the largest automobile he could afford.
Also before steamed hams became the title of the segment/ubiquitous meme my Simpsons friends always referred to it as the Aurora Borealis segment and I'm still salty it's not called that.
I remember loving this episode as a kid, and being horrified when I was finally old enough to watch Pulp Fiction!
It's interesting you say the joke about Apu speedrunning cus i literally saw a video like that a few days ago 😂
Yes and you call the bee segment a "short film" despite the fact it is clearly an interstitial piece that links two segments together
I feel like the barber scene is noteworthy just for bringing back a minor character from all the way back during the shorts era.
Excellent job on this ranking of the 22 short films from that cool season 7 event! I like your rankings very much and I think definitely the jolly Bengali story is one that I always get excited for. Apu is such a special character to me and he has always been one of my favorites! The Apu controversy is so dumb in my opinion! I will always support and stand up for him! This episode is certainly a real treat! It’s a story that I always love coming back to! Also got to shout out about the Chief Wiggum scenes. He is totally fantastic in this episode. I also truly love the scene of milhouse vs Comic book guy and steamed hams of course! Those would be my top favorites!
I disagree with some of these rankings, but I understand why you put them there.
5:24 I just got the joke that Milhouse went medieval on Herman's ass.
Did the snake vs wiggum entry have metal gear inspired music??
6:32 maybe he was too big for the show
I think i might be the only person on the planet that cares about this, but its really nice to see ditto marks in the wild.
Great video! I have to respectfully disagree with you. The Bumblebee Man short film is brilliant AND includes the “Yo quiero Taco Bell” dog! But I absolutely LOVE Homer and Maggie’s segment: Homer writes a Lassie-esque note demanding help in CHEESE, then gives it to the dog, who quickly shakes the note off, and promptly laps up the cheese. This was a Bond-villain-evil-scheme, but Homer’s style with the confines of his flawed intellect. I freaking love it! Totally agree with “Steamed Hams”, it gets me rolling on the floor laughing even thirty-plus years later (and not just because of the memes). Please keep making Simpson videos!
Ive always been a sucker for secret rooms so Moe's segment genuinely ranks really high for me on concept of cool secret room alone
